PGA Anlagenbau, a member of the IBS Paper Performance Group, has successfully started up the next starchPERFORMER within the Smurfit Westrock Group, this time at Smurfit Westrock Morava Paper in the Czech Republic.
As part of an optimization project, the existing conventional starch cooker was replaced by a PGA starchPERFORMER in the surface starch preparation system of PM2. One starchPERFORMER is already in operation at the Smurfit Westrock Group, with more to follow later this year.
The innovative starch cooker enables Smurfit Westrock to significantly reduce surface starch consumption while improving paper quality. Mr. Jurica, operational manager at Smurfit Westrock Morava Paper, is enthusiastic: “PGA's new enzymatic cooker enables us to use starch as a raw material in both slurry and powder form.
The cooker technology allows us to adjust the concentration and viscosity of the cooked starch according to the quality requirements of the paper being produced.

A new and modern hygiene tissue paper manufacturing mill spread over 27,000 sq m, is located in the growing Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD), United Arab Emirates.

Paper Desk : How much water is typically used in your paper mill’s production process, and how do you measure and monitor water usage across different stages of production?

Aejaz Ahmed Munshi : Our tissue mill with a capacity of 100 TPD, utilizes approximately 6-7.5 m³ of water per ton of paper produced. Water usage is closely monitored through digital flow meters installed at critical stages including raw water inlet, stock preparation, machine showers, white water recovery, and effluent discharge. This system enables real-time tracking and data logging to identify optimization opportunities.

Devesh K. Singhal : Our average water consumption is approximately 4 to 4.5 kilolitres per tonne (kL/T) of paper produced. We maintain strict water management protocols across all production stages. Multiple flow meters are strategically installed at key points throughout the manufacturing process to accurately track, monitor, and assess water usage in real-time.
This allows us to identify areas for improvement, minimize wastage, and optimize consumption, while regular audits and data analysis further help in refining our water conservation strategies.

Valmet will deliver an IntelliTissue 1600 machine (TM 5) to Fabryka Papieru i Tektury Beskidy Sp. z o.o. in Wadowice, Poland. The new installation will ensure low media consumption for electricity and gas at a specified production volume.
The order is included in Valmet’s orders received of the second quarter 2025. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The start-up is scheduled for 2026.The new line will enable the customer to produce high-quality tissue paper at low production costs, offering opportunities for market expansion.
