Ravichandran Ashwin’s constant drive to evolve and excel in his craft, coupled with his focus on self-improvement rather than being concerned about the opponents made him stand out, says former India coach Ravi Shastri.

The 38-year-old surprised the cricketing world by announcing his retirement in the middle of the Test series against Australia after the end of the third Test in Brisbane on Wednesday.

“What stands out for me was his wanting to evolve all the time. He wasn’t the kind of guy satisfied as to where he started,” Shastri said on ‘The ICC Review’.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri lauds Ravichandran Ashwin as a “terrific match winner”.

Amritsar’s chess manufacturing industry is having a moment, just like its most recent brand ambassador and youngest world chess champion, D Gukesh. The chess board and 32 pieces that became a tool for the historic feat by Gukesh were carved and crafted in Amritsar.

While his win celebrates India’s growing supremacy in what is considered the most strategic and increasingly competitive game, it also puts spotlight back on Amritsar’s potential as a chess manufacturing hub, which over the years has been struggling for lack of government support for infrastructure.

Baljit Singh, who has dedicated 34 years of his life perfecting the craft of turning small pieces of wood into knights, one of the most intricately carved pieces in chess, is one of the many workers behind crafting the world chess championship set that Gukesh played with. His skill and spotlight on Gukesh’s win, earned him an honorary certificate from Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney.

Singer and Actor Nick Jonas has found himself at the centre of a social media storm after reacting to a tweet by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The playful exchange between the two public figures, which began with a meme from an old Jonas Brothers video, has left some fans with mixed reactions.

The interaction began when Musk retweeted a post from the Tesla Owners Silicon Valley account, claiming that Tesla’s stock had increased by 100 per cent since the 2024 US Presidential Election.

Musk followed up with a humorous comment, “My, how the tables have turned!” along with a GIF from a well-known Jonas Brothers video featuring Nick and Kevin Jonas rotating a brown coffee table. Noticing the post, Nick responded by retweeting Musk’s tweet, sharing a photo of the billionaire smiling and writing, “Take us to the year 3000.”

In his place, slow left-arm orthodox bowler Bjorn Fortuin has been named as a replacement for the remaining two ODIs.

According to a statement from Cricket South Africa (CSA), Maharaj would return to Durban for rehabilitation and would be assessed ahead of the upcoming Test series, which begins on December 26 in Centurion. Australia captain Pat Cummins is not bothered if India walked away with momentum from the drawn third Test but is pleased that they did not let the visitors exploit better batting conditions in the first innings.

Australia, who largely controlled the third Test, declared their second innings at 89/7 to set India a 275-run target. However, rain prevented an exciting climax.

“(I) can’t say I’ve ever been scared of momentum — don’t really care about that. I think we can take a lot from this week,” he told media after the end of the contest.

Pat Cummins was unbothered when asked about India carrying momentum into the penultimate test. Says it never scared him.

Ravichandran Ashwin sparred with his insecurities as a child for far too long and perhaps didn't want to be dragged into rigmarole of insecurities once again.

It is for this reason that an abrupt retirement from international cricket would not seem out of the blue for anyone who has followed the man's journey. It could have happened in Sydney after the fifth Test against Australia but he didn't want to hang around.

Ashwin is the second highest wicket-taker for India in Tests with 537 scalps in 106 games.
