In a concerning development, the groundwater level in Chandigarh has experienced a significant drop of 28.5% over the past decade. This issue was brought to attention during a Rajya Sabha session, where Minister Bishweswar Tudu addressed the matter. According to data collected from 14 wells, the results are mixed, with 5 wells showing a 35.7% increase in groundwater levels, while 9 wells have suffered a substantial decline of 64.3%.

Due to the increase in water level, the first gate of Sukhna Lake was opened around 5:30 in the morning, and the second gate was opened at 6:15. The lake has three floodgates. The third gate has not been opened, but there is so much water accumulated in Sukhna Lake that it is overflowing over the top of the third gate.
