Maharaja BIR CHANDRA MANIKYA 1862-1897 (HistoryCollection 01)

Birchandra Manikya was the brother of Ishan Chandra. After his death, he took over the state of Tripura, in 1862. Birchandra is often called the architect of modern Tripura as he introduced many reforms which were influenced by the efficient western style in the state.
• He reformed the judicial system of the state by systemizing the civil and
criminal law.
• The system of registration and exercise stamps was introduced by him.
• He was instrumental in abolishing the slavery and practice of ‘Sati’ from the
state.
• He was able to tackle the unrest of the Jamatias in 1863 as he realised that
the revolt was not against the King but the oppressive officials who were
exploiting the population of Tripura for their own vested interests.
• During his period, the art and literature was given impetus as the King himself
was a musician and a poet. He knew many languages. The court of King
was an assortment of numerous poets and singers. The title of ‘Tanraj’ was
allotted to famous singer Jadu Bhatta by Birchandra.
• The discovery of great scholar and poet Rabindra Nath was made during his
period.

The era of Birchandra led to many reforms in the state. The King has beenrightly named as ‘Vikramaditya’ of modern Tripura.
