WORLD MEDITATION DAY OBSERVED FOR THE FIRST TIME ON DECEMBER 21

December 21, 2024, marked the inaugural celebration of World Meditation Day, as declared by the UN General Assembly. This momentous occasion coincides with the Winter Solstice and falls six months after International Yoga Day.

The theme for 2024, "Inner Peace, Global Harmony!", serves as a global call to recognize the day by promoting mindfulness, peace, and health. Meditation, an ancient practice rooted in various cultures and traditions, has evolved into a universal tool for personal well-being and mental health.

In line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, World Meditation Day emphasizes the importance of mental health in achieving sustainable development. Goal 3, "Good Health and Well-Being," highlights the need to address key challenges such as mental health, universal health coverage, and the reduction of health inequities.

As the world comes together to observe this special day, the wise words of a spiritual leader resonate: "Meditation is the secret of all growth in spiritual life and knowledge. Be the master of mind rather than mastered by mind."

Locally, various meditation sessions, workshops, and events were organized to mark the occasion. Participants from all walks of life came together to practice mindfulness, promote inner peace, and foster global harmony.

As the world embarks on this new tradition, World Meditation Day is poised to become a powerful catalyst for promoting mental well-being, peace, and harmony across the globe.

TAMPARA LAKE'S FRAGILE ECOSYSTEM UNDER THREAT

Ganjam, Dec 15: Tampara Lake, a picturesque destination in Ganjam district, is facing a grave threat to its biodiversity. The lake, known for its serene landscapes and rich variety of flora and fauna, is struggling to maintain its ecological balance due to unchecked tourism and development.

Located near Chhatrapur, Tampara Lake is a 7km-long waterbody along the Bay of Bengal coastline. The lake's isthmus is covered with a forest of oak, pine, mangrove, banyan trees, and wild shrubs, making it a haven for nature lovers.

However, the growing number of tourists and unchecked construction around the lake are contributing to water contamination. Waste disposal is a common problem, affecting the lake's ecosystem. The lack of proper upkeep and maintenance is also taking a toll on the lake's biodiversity.

Water sports, while providing entertainment, are harming marine life. The noise, smoke, and artificial whirlpools caused by motorboats are threatening the delicate aquatic ecosystem. Migratory birds, which find refuge in Tampara during winter, are also being disturbed by the noise from motorboats.

The water level in Tampara is declining each year due to below-average rainfall in the region. This, combined with pollution, threatens the aquatic species that live in the lagoon, including fish and prawns.

The forest on the other side of the lagoon is also facing threats. Some species of trees, such as oak pine, are nearing extinction. Locals suspect illegal deforestation is also a problem.

Experts warn that if the current trend continues, Tampara Lake's ecosystem may collapse, leading to devastating consequences for the local community and the environment. "It's high time we take action to protect Tampara Lake's biodiversity," said a local environmentalist. "We need to strike a balance between tourism and conservation to ensure the lake's future."

The Odisha government has been urged to take immediate action to protect Tampara Lake's ecosystem. Conservationists are demanding stricter regulations on tourism and development activities around the lake. They are also calling for increased awareness and education among locals and tourists about the importance of preserving the lake's biodiversity.

As the situation continues to deteriorate, it remains to be seen whether the authorities will take the necessary steps to protect Tampara Lake's fragile ecosystem. The fate of this natural wonder hangs in the balance, and it's up to us to ensure its survival.

Belaguntha's Brass Fish Art: A Legacy Reborn!!!

Berhampur: In a heartening revival, Belaguntha's iconic brass fish art is regaining its former glory. Once a proud representation of Ganjam district's cultural heritage, the craft had slipped into obscurity due to negligence and lack of promotion. Determined artisans, led by master craftsman Sushant Kumar Sahu, are spearheading efforts to revive this traditional art form.

The intricate artefacts, crafted from brass sheets and wires, boast polished yet antique appearances. Vibrant red stones add a captivating contrast, lending an air of authenticity. Each piece is meticulously handmade, with brass sheets forming the main body and brass wires crafting intricate details like whiskers and legs. Remarkably, these pieces become more flexible and durable with use, testament to the artisans' exceptional craftsmanship.

The Handicrafts directorate's timely intervention has reignited interest in the craft. Twenty-five women from Palaksandha village are undergoing training under Sushant Kumar Sahu's guidance, forming the Jay Ganesh Pitala Macha WSHG. "This art brought glory to Belaguntha and has potential to provide a steady income," said Namita Behera, WSHG president. The initiative aims to empower women, preserve cultural heritage and promote sustainable livelihoods.

Kamal Kumari Pradhan, sarpanch of Kshatribarapur panchayat, pledged unwavering support for the artisans. "This initiative preserves our heritage and empowers women, contributing significantly to our community's growth." Local authorities have assured assistance in marketing and promoting the artefacts.

For trainees like Mamata Kumari Moharana, Subasini Swain and Bindu Pradhan, learning the craft is both challenging and rewarding. "This art demands focus and dedication, but we're determined to revive our cultural legacy." The artisans envision a brighter future, where their craft brings recognition and financial stability.

As Belaguntha's brass fish art experiences resurgence, it promises not only to safeguard a dying tradition but also transform the lives of those dedicated to its revival. This initiative serves as a beacon of hope for preserving India's rich cultural heritage and empowering rural communities.

Tata Steel Foundation Provides Hearse Van to MKCG Medical College.

Berhampur, December 6, 2024: Tata Steel Foundation (TSF), in a compassionate gesture, has donated a fully equipped hearse van to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.

This timely intervention aims to alleviate the emotional and financial burden on families who lose loved ones at the hospital.
Previously, the absence of a dedicated hearse van forced families to rely on private transport, often leading to significant expenses and added stress during their time of grief.

The new hearse van, provided in collaboration with the District Administration, Ganjam, will ensure that the bodies of the deceased are transported with dignity and respect.

Manikant Naik, Managing Director of Tata Steel Special Economic Zone (TSSEZ), and Ambika Nanda, Head of CSR (Odisha) at TSF, handed over the van to Sangram Panda, Registrar of MKCG Medical College and Hospital.

This initiative reflects Tata Steel Foundation's commitment to social welfare and its dedication to improving the quality of life for communities in the region. By addressing a critical need, the Foundation has demonstrated its ongoing efforts to support healthcare infrastructure and provide essential services.

Neelakhanteswar Swargdam: A Crumbling site!!!

Berhampur [BP]: The once pristine Neelakhanteswar Swargdam, a beloved landmark of Berhampur, is now a victim of neglect. The site is slowly decaying, marred by overgrown vegetation and accumulated debris.

A significant development project undertaken by the Rotary Club of Berhampur in 2018 with gallery, platforms, landscape, water facilities, worth over a crore rupees, promised to revitalize the Swargdam. However, due to a dispute over naming rights, the project was halted, leaving the site in limbo.

The BeMC, the local governing body, has also shied away from taking responsibility for the maintenance of the Swargdam. As a result, the site has been left to deteriorate, with no regular cleaning or upkeep.

Concerned citizens of Berhampur are now demanding urgent intervention to save the Swargdam from further decay. Some have suggested handing over the maintenance responsibility back to the Rotary Club, given their previous involvement in the development project.

The future of Neelakhanteswar Swargdam hangs in the balance. Unless immediate action is taken by Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC), this cherished site risks being lost forever.
