New Delhi, June 5, 2024 - The results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, declared on June 4, have brought significant victories for two alumni of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). Ziaur Rehman Barq and Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi have both secured seats in the Lok Sabha, marking a proud moment for their alma mater.

Ziaur Rehman Barq has been elected from the Sambhal Lok Sabha constituency, winning with a margin of 121,494 votes and a total of 571,161 votes. Barq, who holds a B.A. in Political Science from AMU, was a senior cabinet member and acting secretary of the Aligarh Muslim University Students' Union (AMUSU) during 2005-06. He began his political career in 2022 when he was elected to the 18th Uttar Pradesh Assembly from Kundarki. Barq is the grandson of the late Shafiqur Rahman Barq, a four-time MLA and five-time MP from Sambhal. Following Shafiqur Rahman Barq's death, the Samajwadi Party chose to field his grandson, Ziaur Rehman Barq, in the Lok Sabha elections.

Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi contested the Lok Sabha election from Srinagar, where he won with 188,416 votes, securing a total of 356,866 votes. He belongs to the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference party. Mehdi is a former cabinet minister and has been a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Budgam constituency for three terms. He has completed his M.A. in Political Science from AMU.

These victories underscore the significant impact AMU has had in shaping the careers of its alumni in Indian politics.

By blocking Bab-e-Syed and Centenary Gate, the AMU Riding Club is demonstrating against the AMU administration's decision to deny permission for Athletic Ground to serve as the location of the annual Horse Show, which is scheduled for March 8, 2024.

Members allege that by refusing permission to organise the event at Athletic Ground, which has been taking place there for a very long time, the administration is consciously attempting to subjugate the club.

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) undoubtedly stands as a beacon of education and progress, cultivating an environment where students, regardless of gender, can strive for academic excellence. Despite these commendable qualities, a disconcerting reality persists, casting shadows on the comfort and safety of female students within the campus confines. It is imperative to address the prevalent issue of the unwarranted male gaze, which not only undermines the principles of inclusivity but also poses a significant obstacle to the overall development of female students.
Female students, like their male counterparts, have the right to engage in ordinary activities without fear or discomfort. Whether it's studying in the library, enjoying chai in the canteen, or simply walking on campus, these activities should not be accompanied by the unsettling experience of being watched or harassed. The question arises: does the presence of women on campus impede the right to a comfortable academic environment?
My decision to pen down this article was prompted by the distressing personal encounters of daily unwarranted stares and an exceptionally uncomfortable incident during an evening on campus. In my quest to shed light on the pervasive issue, I reached out to friends, batch mates, and female students in general, discovering that my experiences were unfortunately not isolated. Conversations brought forth even more distressing accounts—stories of unsettling encounters that extended beyond mere stares.
One friend recounted an incident where she was accosted by two individuals in front of her department, who said they were like her ‘brothers’ and insisted that she should accompany them. Another shared a harrowing tale of being relentlessly stalked for an entire month by a student from a prominent department. Instances of catcalling, persistent stalking, and now, distressingly, harassment on social media have become disturbingly commonplace. What is equally disheartening is that these incidents have been reported to the relevant authorities, but regrettably, no effective action has been taken

17/12/2023

The decadence of Muslim society is not a hidden truth. It is a reality that every member of the community, whether he or she is affluent or impoverished, has realized. The community is suffering from multidimensional and multifaceted problems such as intellectual degradation, the loss of correct political acumen, and the realization that Islam has the solution. The discourse on reform and Muslim youth has been a topic for some time.

Reforming Islam or Muslim Society:
The general notion of Muslims when talking about reform is that they perceive it as the reformation of Islam. They see debates like, Does Islam need to be liberalized or reformed? They fall into these types of politically charged questions and feel agitated about them. In reality, Islam has a robust system for every human facet of life. Therefore, the question to be asked should be: Does liberalism need to be Islamized due to its incoherent suppositions? Therefore, it is impossible to reform a system that, in itself, is maximally perfect. The reform is for the people who adhere to Islam and testify that it is perfect. The reform of Muslim society has to emanate from the grassroots level. It is needed in every aspect of the Muslim community that governs its thought process. We present an egalitarian worldview of Islam to others, but we fail to assimilate it within the Muslim community. Islam does not endorse sectarianism; Muslims have it. Islam does not endorse Riba; Muslims are involved in it. Islam does not endorse dowry; Muslims are involved in it. Islam does not endorse casteism; Muslims practice it. Therefore, from the basic view towards the Qur'an as a guide and the image of the Prophet as a charismatic leader, both of them have to be realized at the core of Muslim psychology. It has to be intertwined with innovative applications of original Islamic principles to changing circumstances.

Role of Youth in Creating Islamic Civilization:

To,
Muhammad Iqbal

May Allah keep you safe, my respected teacher!
I have been remembering you persistently, and today, I feel compelled to express my thoughts to you, O mentor. Perhaps everyone here is doing well.
The Ummah that you left behind, in the state and manner you departed, has deteriorated even further. The community you advised to embrace freedom and immerse themselves in unity seems to have no desire for it1. It does not wish to be released from the shackles of enslavement but rather embraces it. The allure it felt for wearing the chains of worldly servitude has persisted and worsened.
Mentor! These children were meant to receive the light of insight through your supplications2. Still, they have fallen prey to a disease called "liberalism," which, although it claims to possess a free-thinking ideology, is a manifestation of their selfish desires.3
Furthermore, these noble children of yours, whom you advised to safeguard themselves with ease, have become captivated by the absurdities of the Western world, spending their days and nights on shallow sofas in dark rooms4. They have become slaves to a devilish machine, claiming it possesses both good and evil. This reminds me of the Quranic verses that speak of alcohol.5
I do not believe that we should not come close to this matter and completely abandon it. Rather, I intend to first attain selfhood6 and then examine all these matters so as not to become enslaved7 by them.

The purpose of the event was to pay generous tribute to Sir Syed Ahmad Khan's visionary legacy and to commemorate the launch of the AMU Journal Newsletter.

In keeping with the legacy of the AMU journal, it has returned this year with a brand-new initiative: a monthly newsletter. A newsletter launched on the prestigious occasion of October 17th, Sir Syed Day 2023, by the AMU Journal team in collaboration with TPO (Training and Placement Office). The newsletter aims to support both alumni and current university students, fostering education and career development. Comprehensive information about AMU news, admission, lifestyle, career, alumni, and more is provided in the newsletter.

Mr Saad Hameed, Training and Placement Officer, AMU, complimented the whole AMU Journal team, saying, "The decision by AMU Journal to launch its monthly newsletter is a wise decision and a very special tribute to Sir Syed Ahmad Khan on his 206th birthday. It will inspire other students and media outlets to take similar steps to disseminate a positive outlook.” He concluded his speech by saying, "On this grand day, we should all take a pledge that we will fulfil Sir Syed's dream by setting up an example to the whole nation."
Hashim Azmi, one of the newsletter's editors, congratulated the whole AMU Journal team for making this possible. He said, "The newsletter is one of its kind, started by the students of AMU. It will surely foster the need to get authentic news in and around the AMU campus and will debunk the fake and bogus news that is being spread in the name of Aligarh Muslim University. Why does the administration of AMU want to keep autonomy chastised?

AMU has given me more than I could ask for. And seeing it try to thrive through such dark times in my university shakes the ground underneath my feet.

There was a time when AMU was known for being at the forefront of dissenting views. Be it human rights, national politics, or university politics, students at AMU made its name shine. But the tides of time have washed away those sandcastles, and with a heavy weight on my heart, I am urged to write such an article where I feel compelled to address why its own autonomy is chastised. Such a circumstance tempts us to ask, "Have we regressed as an institution?" ..............

An event on ‘’Dialogue Among Civilizations", Organized by ICCR, Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India, and PRO, AMU on May 2, 2023, at 12:00 pm. The speech was delivered by Dr. Shawki Ibrahim Adbel-Karim, Grand M***i of the Arab Republic of Egypt, that took place inside the Kennedy Auditorium. Protest against Human Right Violation followed soon after event was concluded. All the authority figures of the University including acting VC Professor Gulrez were present.

From the beginning of the event, an unusually high level of security was noticed around the venue and entrances. During the event's inaugural speech, felicitation, and thank-you note, an unusually large audience was present as well. The event had taken place without incident and concluded around 1:30 PM.
However, the event was followed by a protest against human rights violations, as Dr. Ibrahim has remained a controversial figure ever since he was appointed Grand M***i of Egypt.

According to Amnesty International, Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Karim Allam, who assumed the position of Egypt's grand m***i in 2013 following the military coup led by Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, has endorsed numerous death sentences. Since then, Egypt has witnessed an alarming surge in executions, establishing itself as the third-worst country globally in terms of the number of executions carried out in 2020, as reported by Amnesty.

Mohamed Morsi, the late President associated with the Muslim Brotherhood, tragically passed away while under detention in June 2019. The circumstances surrounding his death have been deemed by UN experts as a "state-sanctioned arbitrary killing." It is noteworthy that Dr. Allam ratified the death sentence imposed on Morsi.Following the conclusion of the event, the protests were eventually cleared with the departure of Dr. Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Karim, who left under heightened security measures

21/04/2023

The Hebrew word Ramdh, which means ‘intensely hot’ or ‘burning’, is the root of the word Ramadan. The month of Ramadan is named so for three reasons. Firstly, during a fast, one becomes hot due to thirst. Secondly, by worshipping and dedicating themselves to this month, Muslims burn away the traces of their sins. And thirdly, as man devotes himself to his creator and fellow beings, the warmth of love is produced. Ramadan is a month of repentance and seeking forgiveness from Allah. Islam’s five pillars include fasting during Ramadan, which is a mandatory act of worship for all Muslims.
Islam teaches that fasting is an act of worship that shows devotion to Allah. It is a means of showing appreciation for the bounties Allah has bestowed upon everyone. It teaches Muslims to suppress their physical wants and put their attention on their spiritual well-being while aiding in the development of self-control and discipline. During Ramadan, there is an essence of love and care between families and communities as they come together to break their fast and share meals. It is a time to deepen ties with loved ones and create bonds that spread happiness and success. Muslims fast during Ramadan slightly early, from daybreak till the time of sundown. They wake up before dawn to eat suhoor, a meal that is meant to provide energy for fasting. The fast goes throughout the day, abstaining from food, drink, and other physical pleasures until sunset, which is the time when Muslims break their fast with a meal called iftar. After iftar, worshipers pray and perform additional rituals.
As the Holy Quran states, ‘O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become righteous. (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183). Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr after twenty-nine to thirty days of fasting and acquiring a better life. The day traditionally starts around dusk on the night of the first crescent moon sighting. Eid al-Fitr is marked as the end of the month of Ramadan and the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal. Muslims all across the world celebrate this auspicious day with their loved ones.

The Hifz competition was successfully held at the Kennedy Auditorium today, on the auspicious day of Yawm-ul-Furqan (17th Ramadan). Talaba-e-Aligarh Muslim University, in collaboration with Cultural Education Centre, organised an event where a Qur'anic competition of Hifz and Qirat took place inside the walls of Kennedy Auditorium.

The inauguration of the event was announced at 10:45 AM by Mohammad Ghayasuddin, and the event officially started at 11:00 AM as soon as the judges and the contestants arrived. The event was hosted by Mutayyib M Khan, with supporting anchor Mushir Javed who also recited a beautiful nazm, Quran Ki Faryad.

Contestants of all ages, including children, participated in the competition. The competition was held in three rounds, and it was announced that the results would be revealed after the second part of the event during the prize distribution ceremony. The competition part of the event concluded at 12:55 PM with thanks and bouquets presented to the judges.

At 2:30 PM, the second part of the event started as Raza Haider hosted the program and called Adnan Rafiq to deliver a nazm by Allama Iqbal. The program included several thought-provoking nazms and shers as fillers. As per the tradition of AMU, the event officially started with a qirat recited by Mushir Javed.

Soon after, bouquets were offered to guests by Hashim Azmi and Mushir Javed. Mohammad Ghayasuddin delivered a speech where he talked about the significance of Yawm-ul-Furqan and why the 17th day of Ramadan is titled as such. He concluded his speech expressing concerns about the comparatively low number of audience members and asking students to introspect.

Soon after the first speech, a nazm was delivered by Imran Jalali, followed by the speech of the next guest, Professor Abdul Majid Khan from the Department of Islamic Studies. He touched the hearts of the audience with his expressions of strong emotions of The Prophet (PBUH), Muslims before the Hijrat, and their early lives before Hijrat and Battle of the Badar.
