For marginalized tribal communities, the forest is not just a resource—it is their home, heritage, and the foundation of their existence. These communities are highly vulnerable, facing threats of displacement, loss of livelihood, and cultural erosion. Therefore, protecting their forest rights is essential, as without access to the forest, their way of life is at serious risk.

The forest serves as their primary source of income, with families depending on its resources for survival. Beyond economic needs, the forest is deeply woven into their spiritual and cultural traditions.

Losing access to the forest would mean losing their economic stability, cultural heritage, and identity. Their survival is closely tied to the forest, making its preservation and their rights not merely a matter of legal recognition, but a vital issue of survival and justice.

For years, the farmers in rural Sundergarh watched their fields wither under the relentless sun, their hopes fading with each passing season. But everything changed when a well was finally dug in their village, bringing not just water, but a renewed sense of life and possibility.

This transformation was made possible by the tireless efforts of Samajik Seva Sadan, an NGO devoted to uplifting rural communities. In Sundergarh alone, they have dug 54 such wells, each one a beacon of hope for the farmers who depend on them. Through their work, they have provided more than just water, they have restored the dignity and livelihoods of countless families, empowering them to reclaim their lands and build a brighter future.

We had the privilege of witnessing and documenting this change while filming a documentary for the NGO today. Seeing the impact of their work firsthand was a powerful reminder of the difference that dedication and compassion can make.

While filming documentary films for NGOs in the rural areas of Odisha, we encountered some truly heartwarming experiences. During one shoot in a remote village, where there were no hotels or formal dining options, the NGO staff approached a local family at random. This family graciously invited us into their home and prepared a meal for our entire crew. Their hospitality was remarkable, and the food was delicious.

Such moments are a testament to the kindness and generosity of people in these villages, who go out of their way to welcome strangers with open hearts. Such experiences and connections pushes us to put our heart in the work we do which inturn reflects in stories we capture.

The Konds, also known as Khond are a tribal group in the hills and jungles of Odisha. Traditionally animistic, they worship the Sun and Earth and historically practiced human sacrifice, now replaced by animal sacrifices. They live in villages with timber and mud houses, practicing agriculture, shifting cultivation, and animal husbandry. Mining activities in Orissa pose significant threats to their traditional way of life. Despite these challenges, the Konds maintain rich cultural traditions, including vibrant festivals, dances, and a deep connection to their land.

In our country, rag pickers lead a challenging existence marked by poverty and hardship. Often hailing from marginalized communities, they scavenge through heaps of waste in urban areas, seeking recyclable materials to earn a meager livelihood. Their daily labor exposes them to hazardous conditions, with little protection against toxins and pollutants. Many reside in makeshift settlements near landfills or in congested slums, enduring cramped living spaces devoid of proper sanitation and clean water. Despite their essential role in waste management, rag pickers face social stigma and discrimination. They are often denied access to education and healthcare, perpetuating cycles of poverty and vulnerability. Nonetheless, their resilience and resourcefulness remain evident as they contribute to recycling efforts, albeit in the shadows of society's awareness. Various NGOs and grassroots organizations work tirelessly to enhance their living standards, pushing for equitable rights and acknowledgment for these marginalized segments of Indian society.
