Ajmer Shareef Dargah Prominent Place Symbol of Love, Harmony and Truth.

It was in the city of Ajmer that Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, one of the greatest spiritual redeemers of humankind, laid the cornerstone of Islam in India in the year 1192 A.D. Also known as, 'Sultan-Ul-Hind', this sanctum sanctorum houses the mausoleum of the revered saint, which is the biggest attraction of the Dargah. Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti occupies a prominent place among the spiritual leaders of the world. Venerated as a symbol of love, harmony and truth, Khwaja Baba has forever been a source of immense inspiration and undaunted trust to his disciples. He was a Sayed, a descendant of Muhammad, who came from Persia and devoted his life to the service and upliftment of the underprivileged and the unfortunate. It is said that during his final year, the saint locked-up himself in a room for six days to pray and left his mortal body in solitude. He laid the foundation of the liberal Chishti order of Sufis in India and inspired millions of souls with his teachings. The first recorded pilgrimage to Ajmer Sharif was made in the year 1332 when the Turkic Sultan of Delhi Muhammad Bin Tughluq went to pay his homage to the Sufi Saint.

Who was Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti? How did his dargah come to be in Ajmer which was called as the ‘last capital of the Hindu empire’ in the 19th century? Details are provided by Har Bilas Sarda in his book published in 1911.

Muinuddin was born in 1143 ce. Born in village Sijiz in Shaksthan near Ghor in Afghanistan. His father was called Sayyid Ghiasuddin Ahmad and his mother was Bibi Mahanur. His father was a Hussaini Sayyid.

The family migrated to Khurasan while Muinuddin was still a child. Ghiasuddin Admad died in 1156 ce at Nishapur, leaving his son a garde and a pan-chakki, a water driven flour mill.

Muinuddin came under the influence of Ibram Qandozi and became an ascetic. He sold off the garden and went off to Bokhara and Samarkand. Here he became a pupil of Hisamuddin Bokhari and studied the Koran.

In 1165 ce, he became a disciple of Khwaja Usman Chishti Harooni in Haroon. Muniuddin now adopted the name Chishti for himself. Chisht being a village near Herat; the founder of the sect Ishaq Shami came from this village as did the initial leaders of the sect.

Muinuddin was in Ghazni when the army of Shahabuddin Ghori conquered Delhi. Muniuddin accompanied the victorious army and settled down in the nearby Hindu holy town of Ajmer. He was 52 years old at this time.

The Tabkati Nasiri, authored by Minhaji Siraj, speaks of Shahbuddin’s invasion of India in which Prithviraj was killed. This is what Minhaji Siraj wirtes: “The author heard from a trustworthy person, a distinguished man of the highland district of Tulak, whom they used to style by the title of Muniuddin who said: ‘I was in that army along with the Sultan I Ghazi, and the number of cavalry composing the army of Islam that year was one hundred and twenty thousand arrayed in defensive armour.’”

The fact of Muinuddin accompanying the conquering armies of Shahbuddin is noted also in the Muntakhabul Tawarikh, authored by Maulana Abdul Qadir Badayuni and other histories of the time written by Muslim historians. This was the time when Shahbuddin conquered Delhi and Ajmer.

Khwaja sahib lived a comfortable life at Ajmer, collecting followers. At the age of 90 he even got married to the daughter of Sayyid Wajiuddin Muhammad Mashhedi. He now had to wives, Amatullah and Asmat Bano. He had three sons, Khwaja Fakhruddin, Khwaja Abu Said, and Khwaja Hisamuddin, and a daughter named Bibi Hafiz Jamal.

Khwaja sahib, as Muinuddin was now known, died in March 1236 ce at the age of 97. He was buried at Ajmer.

His chief disciples were Sheikh Hamiduddin Soofi of Nagor, Marwar and Khwaja Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki who settled in Delhi and died there.

Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti’s grave remained as simple as the life he had led. He was buried in the room in which he lived all his life. His followers, like him, were said to be people who preached against aggression and showed goodwill towards all.

Once in a while the descendants of Sheikh Hamiduddin Nagori visited Ajmer to pay their respects at Muinuddin’s grave but by and large he was forgotten in Ajmer. For three hundred years he remained forgotten.

Things changed when in 1460s, Sultan Mahmud Khilji, now controlling Mandu, conquered Ajmer. His son, Ghiasuddin, at the instance of Khwaja Hussein Nagori in 1464, built a pucca tomb and a small dome over it. In 1570 ce, Akbar built a magnificent Akbari Masjid in the Dargah at the foot of the north eastern spur of the Taragarh hill. Akbar also came on a pilgrimage to the shrine every year. This is what resulted in the dargah getting the reputation of a great place of worship. Akbar’s grandson, Shah Jahan built a splendid dome and added the Jama Masjid made in white marble and deepened the Jhalra tank. He also added a gateway for the Nakkar Khana and beautified the surroundings.
