Brain-Like Photonic Microchips Developed
Researchers, including those from the University of Exeter and the University of Oxford in the UK, combined phase-change materials - commonly found in household items such as rewritable optical discs - with specially designed integrated photonic circuits to deliver a biological-like synaptic.
Scientists, including one of the Indian-origin, have developed microchips that mimic the way the human brain works to store and process information by using light rather than electricity. Researchers, including those from the University of Exeter and the University of Oxford in the UK, combined phase-change materials - commonly found in household items such as rewritable optical discs - with specially designed integrated photonic circuits to deliver a biological-like synaptic response. Crucially, their photonic synapses can operate at speeds a thousand times faster than those of the human brain. The research, published in the journal Science Advances, could pave the way for a new age of computing, where machines work and think in a similar way to the human brain, while at the same time exploiting the speed and power efficiency of photonic systems.
"The development of computers that work more like the human brain has been a holy grail of scientists for decades," said Harish Bhaskaran from the University of Oxford.

Nubia Z17 mini Limited Edition with 6GB RAM launched in India at Rs 21,999

ZTE's sub-brand Nubia has launched the Limited Edition of its Nubia Z17 mini smartphone. The Limited Edition of the phone comes with 6GB RAM and is priced at Rs 21,999. The smartphone will be exclusively available on Amazon, starting September 15.

The USP of the Nubia Z17 mini is its dual rear camera setup, comprised of two 13MP modules. One of these has a monochrome sensor while the other has a RGB sensor. The smartphone is claimed to have ultra-fast focusing speeds. A 16MP front-facing camera with wide-angle lens is also included.

Nubia Z17 Mini has a 5.2-inch full HD display of 1080x1920 pixel resolution. It is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm 652 processor, paired with 4GB of RAM. There's 64GB internal storage, expandable up to 200GB via microSD cards. The smartphone runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS with Nubia UI baked on top. Backed by a 2950mAh battery, it offers 4G VoLTE, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and NFC as connectivity options.

Apple hikes iPad Pro prices in India a day after iPhone X launch

Apple, a day after launching its flagship iPhone X, has hiked the price of its iPad Pro tablets in select countries, including India. The company has increased the price of iPad Pro models, including the ones that were introduced at the WWDC 2017 conference.

The new 12.9-inch iPad Pro Wi-Fi models with 256GB and 512GB now cost Rs 76,200 and Rs 93,200 respectively. Earlier, the prices of the two variants were Rs 70,900 and Rs 86,400 respectively. The 64GB Wi-Fi model costs the same at Rs 63,500.

The 12.9-inch iPad Pro Wi-Fi + Cellular model with 256GB and 512GB storage now cost Rs 86,800 and Rs 103,800, which is a rise from Rs 81,400 and Rs 97,000. The 64GB variant price tag stays untouched.
