*Earthquake Death Toll Across Turkey-Syria Crosses 34,000*

Ankara, February 13: The death toll from the earthquakes in Turkey and northwestern Syria has gone past 34,000 as rescue efforts continue, reported CNN.

It reached at least 34,179 on Sunday (local time). The death toll in Turkey has reached 29,605, said the Turkish Emergency Coordination Center SAKOM.

The confirmed death toll in Syria is 4,574. That number includes more than 3,160 in opposition-held parts of northwestern Syria, according to the health ministry of the Salvation Government governance authority.

The Syrian death toll also includes 1,414 deaths in government-controlled parts of Syria, according to the state news agency SANA.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) says it is waiting for final approval to send crossline deliveries into northwest Syria, where rebel groups in the country’s long-running civil war control territory and aid deliveries have faced obstacles, reported CNN.

The WHO hopes its Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus will soon be able to travel into the rebel-held areas hit by the devastating earthquake, the organization said Sunday.

Tedros and a team of top WHO officials arrived in Aleppo on Saturday on a humanitarian aid flight carrying over USD 290,000 worth of trauma emergency and surgical kits.

Rick Brennan, a regional emergency director with the WHO, said in a media briefing from Damascus Sunday that there have been “no crossline deliveries” into northwest Syria since the earthquake struck last Monday, reported CNN.

“We have one scheduled in the next couple of days. We are still negotiating for that to go ahead,” Brennan said, adding that before the earthquake the WHO was “planning a significant expansion of our crossline work.”

According to Brennan, the WHO has the approval of the Syrian government in Damascus but is waiting for the “approval … from entities on the other side.”

“We are working very, very hard to negotiate that access,” Brennan stressed.

On Sunday, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths tweeted that “trucks with UN relief are rolling into north-west Syria,” posting pictures of trucks being loaded for cross-border deliveries, reported CNN.

Although he said he was “encouraged by the scale-up of convoys from the UN trans shipment centre at the Turkish border,” the aid chief stressed the need to “open more access points” to get aid out quicker.

This call was echoed by Raed Al Saleh, the head of the volunteer organization the White Helmets, in a tweet Sunday. Al Saleh said that after meeting with Griffiths at the Turkish-Syrian border Sunday, his group had appreciated the “apology for the shortcomings & mistakes,” made.

He called on the UN to act now outside the Security Council to “open 3 crossings for emergency aid” to northwest Syria, reported CNN.

Meanwhile, a week after the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, teams are rushing to save victims that could still be alive under rubble, with a UN liaison officer in Turkey warning that they are “approaching the end of the search and rescue window.”

While calling on the international community to “act immediately” in providing humanitarian aid to Syria, Syrian-American actor Jay Abdo told CNN on Saturday that civilians were “racing against time” to rescue loved ones.

However, in the midst of tragedy, there have been miraculous scenes of survival and rescue, even days after the quake.

A 10-year-old girl was rescued after 147 hours under the rubble, the latest in a series of harrowing stories of success as workers in Turkey continue to search for survivors.

A teenage girl, Ayse (Reem Khaled Naasani), was rescued in Hatay Sunday some 162 hours after the quake, according to the Istanbul mayor. And a 50-year-old woman named Guler Agritmis was also rescued Sunday after spending days under the rubble, the Turkish state broadcaster TRT reports.

A two months old baby was rescued in Turkey’s Hatay province 108 hours after the deadly earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, according to Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca on Sunday.–(ANI)

*Turkey-Syria Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 7,700-Mark*

Ankara, February 8: The death toll from the earthquakes that jolted Turkey and Syria has risen to at least 7,726, CNN reported. At least 42,259 people have been injured in Turkey and Syria after deadly earthquakes.

Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said that at least 5,894 people have died and 34,810 others have been injured in Turkey after earthquakes that jolted the country on Monday. At least 1,832 people have died and 3,849 others have been injured in Syria, as per the CNN report.

Orhan Tatar, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency's general director (AFAD), said that at least 5,775 buildings collapsed after an earthquake hit Turkey on Monday, as per the news report. On Tuesday, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said that around 7,500 Turkish soldiers are working in the earthquake-affected region to assist with rescue operations.

Hulusi Akar also said an additional 1,500 personnel will join the team on Wednesday. Hulusi Akar said that 75 military aircraft have been dispatched to the region, as per the CNN report. He added that nine commando battalions have arrived in the region from the west and four commando battalions from Cyprus will arrive in the region as well.

On Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a three-month state of emergency in 10 southern provinces which were hit by massive quakes, Anadolu Agency reported.

While addressing the State Information Coordination Center in the capital Ankara, Erdogan said, "Based on the authority given to us by Article 119 of the Constitution, we decided to declare a state of emergency."

"We will quickly complete the presidential and parliamentary processes about the state of emergency decision, which will cover 10 provinces where earthquakes have occurred and will last for three months," he added.

Erdogan's remarks came after the 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Pazarcik district of Kahramanmaras province on Monday. Later, a 7.6 magnitude quake centred in Kahramanmaras's Elbistan district rocked the region, affecting several other provinces, including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, as per the Anadolu Agency report.

The third earthquake of magnitude 6.0 hit Goksun, Turkey on Monday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. The earthquake was also felt in several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon.

In his remarks, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "Both earthquakes were experienced at a distance of 7 kilometres on earth that exponentially increased the severity of the destruction," Anadolu Agency reported.

He further said, "It has caused great destruction in a very wide area compared to their counterparts. Therefore, we are faced with one of the biggest disasters not only in our Republic's history but also in our geography and the world."

As per the Anadolu Agency report, Erdogan emphasized that considering the devastating effect of the earthquake, they ordered expert personnel and vehicles from all over the country to immediately move to the region. He stated that despite the difficulties caused by the weather conditions, the teams struggled selflessly to reach the disaster region and participate in the work.–(ANI)

*J&K Administration Sensitive to Issues Faced by Kashmiri Pandits: LG Manoj Sinha*

JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir administration is sensitive to the issues faced by migrant Kashmiri Pandits, including those employed under the prime minister’s package, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said on Saturday, asserting that his doors are always open for them.

Sinha inaugurated a special governance camp at the Jagti Colony here and addressed a gathering of people of the Kashmiri Pandit community.

Referring to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the “insensitive" approach of the LG administration towards the “plight" of Kashmiri Pandit employees, Sinha said, “The administration is sensitive to the issues of Kashmiri migrant families and PM Package employees." “Few unfortunate incidents had occurred. Those attacks were not only on individuals but also on the integrity of India," he said. The Lt governor was talking about the killing of Kashmiri Pandit community members by terrorists in the Valley last year.

A handful of people were targeting innocent civilians at the behest of the neighbouring country, he alleged.

“Under the guidance of Prime Minister Modi, we are working with full sensitivity and commitment to address all the issues," the Lt governor added.

Gandhi, in his letter to Modi, had said, “At a time when the Kashmiri Pandits are pleading for their safety… and expecting sympathy and affection from the government, use of words like ‘beggars’ by the Lt Governor for them is irresponsible.

Prime Minister, you may not be familiar with the insensitive style of functioning of the administration." Strongly refuting the charge, Sinha asserted that he has never made any such statement and it was attributed to him with “malicious intent".

“It is completely fabricated and full of lies. I have never used such words for anyone in my entire life. It is my firm belief that anyone who needs help should always be given priority. My doors are open 24 hours for those who have any problem," the Lt Governor added.

He said many PM Package employees who had fled to Jammu in May last year following targeted killings by terrorists have resumed their duties in the Valley, and orders have been issued to release their pending salaries without delay.

The Lt Governor said the administration and the security forces are working with dedication to ensure the safety of the community.

The 12-day governance camp at six locations is aimed at ensuring 100 per cent saturation of social security schemes for Kashmiri migrants. Eighteen departments have put up their stalls at the camp, including facilities for the youth to enrol themselves for self-employment, skilling and up-skilling.

Sinha said almost all posts under the PM Package have been filled and the Union territory administration has made all arrangements for the construction of 6,000 dwellings.

“Except two, construction is underway on all sites. I am personally monitoring the progress. 1,200 houses and till December, 2,700 houses will be ready. All the pending promotions were completed recently. The process of promotion from non-gazetted to gazetted posts is going on, and I hope it will be completed by the end of this month," he said.

He further said that 80-85 per cent of PM Package employees have been posted at district headquarters. “Some are posted at tehsil headquarters… We have ensured that no one is posted at any office or school situated in a remote isolated area."(PTI)

She was a math teacher in Mallapuram, Kerala, India.
One day, one of her students saw her begging near a train station but did not recognize her very well.
Later, the student realized it was his class teacher.
Her student asked her what she was doing at the railway station in such a situation, she said, "After I retired my children left me, I became homeless since then, so I found myself begging in front of the railway station."
The crying student brought her home and gave her good clothes, food, and planned her accommodation, contacting all the educated schoolmates. They did amazing things, moved her to a better place to live and changed her life forever.
Lessons:
Her children left her, but not the children she taught. Love other children as you love your own, because no one knows what tomorrow may bring.

*Four Kashmiri youths detained in Ahmedabad for suspicious movement*

Ahmedabad, Feb 1: Ahmedabad Crime Branch and the city police have detained four Kashmiri youths from the Motera area because of their suspicious movement near the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Deputy Commissioner of Crime Branch, Chetainya Mandlik, told media that the CB team and the local police detained the four Kashmiri youths from the Motera area because of their suspicious movement near Narendra Modi stadium late on Monday night.

The officer said that the four youths, all of whom are from Budgam near Srinagar, are being questioned about their presence in Ahmedabad.

According to sources, the youths were found in an area near the stadium, where ordinary citizens are not allowed to move. In the past, they had visited and stayed in a mosque in the Palanpur area. This time, after arriving in Ahmedabad, they had checked in at the Haj house.

The police suspected their movement because of the T20 international match between India and New Zealand scheduled at the stadium on February 1. Both teams have already reached the city and are practising at the stadium. (IANS)
