We, the three prominent Chakma NGOs of Mizoram (YCA, MCSU & CMS) strongly condemn the obnoxious remarks made by Pu R. Lalzirliana, Minister i/c District Council & Minority Affairs (DC&MA) Department on 23rd February, 2023 during the recent Mizoram Assembly Budget Session. In relation to the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) of Mizoram he uttered, โLem kan va der mai mai a ni kha, vote zawn nan kan va hmang mai mai ani kha, an nih ho hian an lo awih ve em em a, kha chauh a nia a, a ho tak tak a ni aโฆ.โ (which roughly translates as โIt was a bit of drama to lure them (people of ADCs) to vote in our favour. It is they who are befooled by the fake promises, which is a foolishness on their part. Thatโs it!). The above remarks have hurt the sentiments of the people of CADC including our sister ADCsโ too. This type of wild remarks from a senior public representative and being the Minister of DC&MA undermines and ridicules the very existence of the ADCs in Mizoram. We believe Pu R. Lalzirliana doesnโt deserve to be at the helm of DC&MA Department now and hence, be replaced with a new competent Minister to lead the department.
Through this joint statement we strongly demand Pu R. Lalzirliana to take back his words and seek apologies from the people of the three ADCs. Further, we appeal all the public representatives not to make any such remark that disturbs the very tranquil nature of Mizoram where people of different cultures peacefully co-exist within the framework of the Indian Constitution.
