I came across Hrishikesh Mukherjee and the Basu Chaterjee brand of films as a teenager in the early 2000s and fell in love with them. The most beautiful aspect of these films was the connectivity I felt with the characters and story. From those characters, I especially connect with a teenager who was just like myself: lanky, underweight, thinks and acts like myself, conscious of his own body at times, and at the same time confidant and sure of himself.

I have discovered myself with that character; the actor who plays that character was "Ranjit Chowdhry," a September born like myself. Ranjit was born on September 19, 1955, in Mumbai, India, into a family deeply rooted in arts and theatre. His mother was "Pearl Padamsee," an acclaimed stage actress, director, and producer herself, who raised him with her second husband, the legendary "Alyque Padamsee."

Chowdhry received his early education at Campion School in Mumbai and made his acting debut with Basu Chatterjee's 'Khatta Meetha' (1978), also starring his mother Pearl Padamsee with Ashok Kumar, Rakesh Roshan, Bindiya Goswami, Deven Verma, and David.

Khatta Meetha' was followed by Basu Chaterjee's "Baton Baton Mein (1979)," starring Amol Palekar and Tina Munim. David, Pearl Padamsee, Asrani, and Hrishikesh Mukherjee's "Khubsoorat (1980)" stars Rekha, Ashok Kumar, Dina Pathak, and Shashikala. He aslo appeared in 1981 film Chakra starring Smita Patil, where he played "Benwa" the son of Smita's character and had a small role in Amitabh Bacchan's "Kaliaa (1981)"

In just a few roles, he made such an impact that people still remember him, and people like me adore him. In the early 1980s, Chowdhry expanded his horizons and moved to the United States, where he continued to flourish as an actor. He wrote the screenplay for and acted in 'Sam & Me' (directed by Deepa Mehta), which won an honourable mention at Cannes in 1991.

He went on to appear in films like "Mississippi Masala(1991)," It Could Happen to You" (1994)," Bandit Queen (1994)," "Fire (1996)," "Bollywood/Hollywood(2002)," "Last Holiday(2006)," and many more.

His international acclaim grew with roles in popular TV shows such as 'The Office', where he played Vikram, a telemarketer, and 'Prison Break'.

Ranjit was also one of the screenplay and dialogues writer for "Malgudi Days," the popular Indian TV show based on the works of RK Narayanan.

Ranjit was also part of acclaimed plays like "An Ordinary Muslim," "Rafta Rafta," "The Mesmerist’," and "Chaos Theory."

Tragedy struck when Chowdhry was in Mumbai for a dental procedure and was unable to return to the United States due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Tragically, he passed away on April 15, 2020, due to complications arising from his emergency surgery for an intestinal ulcer. He was survived by his wife, Malini, and son, Avishay Chowdhry.

The intro on his website rightly says, "Lovable, witty, energetic, effervescent... his uncanny ability to diffuse any difficult situation with a dose of incredible humour. Ranjit was all this and more."

"It’s difficult to think of Ranjit without a smile on our faces or a chuckle," It says and we are remembering him with a smile on our faces.
