A detail from one of a set of ten drawings of inlay ornamentation on the cenataphs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal in the Taj Mahal, Agra, painted in c.1840.

The buildings of Shah Jahan display some of the most extraordinary inlay work in semi-precious stones on marble ever created. This painting from the nineteenth century schematises these motifs into a flat watercolour drawing, showing every aspect of the design in fine detail.

I love the way how the artist of this painting has captured the internal glow of the inlay work. This depth resembles the real materials, which reflect light from the white marble behind through the semiprecious stone, which is what makes this form of architectural decoration so spectacular to see.

Painting in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, AL.8484:5.

▫️The most underrated and not so famous tomb in agra💫
▫️Emperor akbar built this in the memory of one of his wife Bibi Ishwardi and called this tomb and dhakri ka mahal.
▫️This tomb is square in plan and is built of fine quality red sandstone.
The cenotaph is missing from the tomb.
▫️The roof has beautiful kiosk built with pillars, while a miniature kiosk of similar design adorns each corner.
▫️A persian inscription on the monuments reads "it is the sepulcher of Bibi Ishwardi"
▫️This mughal architecture is considered as a fusion of Islamic, Persian, and rajasthani architecture.
▫️Central chamber having the grave according to the persian inscription.
▫️It has four doors in each direction and a staircase to assess the roof.
▫️All four corners are adorned with small domes or cuppas built by four stone pillars and domes are constructed with octagonal base.

Stone Inlay details, Tomb of I'timād-ud-Daulah (1628), Agra, India

Referred to as the 'Baby Taj' this tomb is seen as precedent setting for the Taj Mahal which was later built in 1643!

It also marks the transition of Mughal architecture from primarily Red Sandstone structures to White Marble with stone inlay work. It's probably my favourite monument following Akbar's Tomb (see Day 355).

The mausoleum was built by Nur Jahan, the Mughal emperor Jahangir's wife, for her Persian father. Nur Jahan is a super interesting female figure in Mughal history, and is known to have controlled the empire during Jahangir's period due to his shortcomings as emperor.

The tomb structure is filled with polychrome ornaments - geometric, floral, and calligraphy designs transition seamlessly across the surfaces of the space.

The quality of stone inlay work here is incredibly intricate and reminds me of the beautiful jewelry work that Mughals were also known for.

📍The Taj Mahal Complex, Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India (2018).
🕌
The buildings to either side of the Taj Mahal are built of red sandstone much like the other building projects of Shah Jahan in Delhi, in Shahjahanabad. The carved floral motifs are said to be inspired by Persian painting styles mixed with European botanical engravings. When translated into stone, the raised surface of the carving catches the morning light which quivers and glows as the sun moves across the sky.🇮🇳.

The building is covered in incredible floral motifs, thought to have been derived from European botanical engravings. These same motifs soon also made their way onto Mughal dress and textiles.

Anguri Bagh is situated in Agra Fort, it was buil by Shah Jahan in 1637 with Khas Mahal to its east and red sandstone arcades on the other three sides, it was the principal square of the zenana apartments or the living area of the royal ladies.

There was a marble paved platform with a fountain in its centre and the garden itself was divided into compartments in intricate geometrical pattern. As the name suggests, this garden was known for harvesting choicest of grapes and flowers throughout the year. It was designed to be a pleasant retreat or the paradise garden for the royal ladies and ensured their complete privacy. Hammams or imperial bathhouses adorned with exquisite wall paintings in royal blue and gold were located to its northeast. The tanks near the Jehangiri Mahal ensured the water supply to the ponds and baths of this garden.

An up-close detail of a watercolour painting of the Interior of I’timad ad-Daula’s Tomb, Agra, painted c.1820.

I’timad ad-Daula was the father of Nur Jahan, and Emperor Jahangir’s chief minister. His lavish tomb was completed in 1628, and was inlaid with semi-precious stones.

Here I got really close to photograph this tiny detail. I love the poppy motif painted on the wall, which was famously also used on textiles from northern India. The jali, the inlay, and the niche containing more vases of flowers illustrate the richness of architectural decoration from the Mughal period.

A watercolour painting of a section of the cenotaph of Shah Jahan in the Taj Mahal, Agra, painted c.1800 in Agra or Delhi.

The meticulous skill of this nineteenth-century artist vividly captures the glowing inlay of semi-precious stones set into white marble. In real life their translucency enables light to pass through them and reflect on the marble beneath, causing the light to be refracted through the stone and the inlay to glow.

Standing in the Dariwaalon ki Bageechi in the lanes of Tajganj is the Radha-Krishna Mandir.

The highlighting point of this temple is the gorgeous paintings that are unfortunately not taken care of well.

This is perhaps among the few remaining Maratha-era temples of Agra. The design is of a typical shivalaya that started to appear in the 18th century.

The paintings depict the various mythological scenes like Krishna leela, Samudra Manthana, Hiranyakashipu vadh, Ganesha, Ravana vadh, etc.

The plan of the temple is octagonal, and the dome of the temple is lotus-shaped, which is typical of temples and mosques of this period.

If you plan to visit Tajganj, make sure to check out this temple!

This snapshot comes from the interior of the Jain Shwetamber Temple of Shri Chintamani Parshavnath ji in Agra, whose current construction is believed to start in date from the reign of Akbar (not the section shown here), and was added to continuously from then on.

The use of inlay in this temple is exquisite, and I love the way how textiles have been attached to the stone.
