Record Number: 15 Israeli Swimmers Qualify for NCAA Championships
Israeli swimmers continue to shine in the U.S., as three female and 12 male swimmers have qualified for the prestigious national finals. Gal Cohen Groumi leads the pack, ranking third in the 200-yard individual medley, while Leah Polonsky and Ron Polonsky also secured high rankings. Full list inside.
In recent years, Israeli swimmers have been making their mark in the NCAA, achieving significant success. However, this year, they have broken even their own records. On Tuesday, the official list of qualifiers for the NCAA Championships was published, featuring a record-breaking 15 Israeli swimmers.
The previous record for Israeli swimmers qualifying for the NCAA Championships was 11, set two years ago. Last year, 10 Israeli swimmers competed in the annual event. This year, three female swimmers and six male swimmers earned spots in individual events, with some ranking highly. Additionally, six more swimmers will compete in their universities' relay teams. The list may still change slightly before the championships begin.
The Strong Women
The women's championships will take place first, from March 19 to 22, in Federal Way, Washington. The top-ranked Israeli female swimmer is Leah Polonsky (Cal Berkeley), who is ranked in the top eight in two different events and has qualified in three—a remarkable achievement. Leah placed seventh in the 200-yard individual medley and eighth in the 200-yard freestyle. Additionally, she qualified 25th in the 200-yard butterfly.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Polonsky will be joined by Daria Golovaty (Louisville), who qualified in 18th place. Golovaty also qualified 26th in the 500-yard freestyle and is expected to compete in the 100-yard freestyle, where she ranked 52nd.
The third Israeli female swimmer is Aviv Barzelay (Texas A&M), who once again qualified in her strongest event, the 200-yard backstroke, ranking 32nd.
A Wave of Male Swimmers
The men's championships will take place one week later, from March 26 to 29, in the same pool. The highest-ranked Israeli male swimmer is Gal Cohen Groumi (Michigan), who is ranked third in the 200-yard individual medley, making him a strong medal contender—an achievement he has yet to reach in his career (last year, he finished fifth in this event). He also qualified 10th in the 200-yard freestyle.
Ron Polonsky (Stanford) qualified in three events: 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke, 16th in the 200-yard individual medley, and 23rd in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Tomer Frankel (Indiana) secured spots in both butterfly events, as expected. In the 100-yard butterfly—where he won a silver medal last year—he qualified 16th, and in the 200-yard butterfly, he placed 21st.
Bar Soloveychik (Minnesota) qualified 21st in the 500-yard freestyle and 27th in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Yoav Romano (Wisconsin) will join him in the 500-yard freestyle after qualifying at the last-chance meet, taking the 24th spot. David Gerchik (Northwestern) also made the cut, ranking 27th in the 100-yard backstroke.
The Relay Team
In addition to the individual qualifiers, several Israeli swimmers will compete in relay events (most of the above swimmers are also expected to take part in their teams' relays).
Daniel Eichel (Minnesota) is set to swim in the 4x200-yard freestyle relay.
Chris Pichugin (Georgia) will swim the breaststroke legs in both medley relays.
Martin Kartavi (NC State), who narrowly missed an individual qualification, will swim the freestyle sprints in the relays.
Denis Loktev (Louisville), an Olympic swimmer, will contribute to the freestyle relays as usual.
Eitan Ben Sh*trit (Michigan), another Olympic swimmer, just missed individual qualification but is expected to swim in the 4x200-yard relay and possibly another event.
Hunter Ingram will represent Arizona in the relays.
This list is not yet final and may change slightly before the competition.
