Ancient Acoustic Treatment at St. Mary’s Collegiate Church, Youghal

Did you know that St. Mary’s Collegiate Church in Youghal contains a fascinating example of early acoustic engineering? During restoration work in the 1850s, earthenware jars were discovered high in the walls of the church’s chancel. These jars were placed there centuries ago with the goal of enhancing the church’s acoustics.

Lying on their sides with their mouths facing into the chancel, these jars were designed to influence sound waves, improving the overall acoustics for speech and music. This innovative technique dates back to ancient Roman and Greek theatres, where similar methods were used to project sound across large auditoriums.

The jars in St. Mary’s are replicas, recreated from sketches made when the originals were discovered during the 19th-century restoration. It’s incredible to think that even in medieval times, builders were thinking about how to enhance the auditory experience for churchgoers!

Next time you visit St. Mary’s, take a moment to appreciate this centuries-old acoustic treatment still embedded in the architecture

It’s truly an honor to be recognized with an IMRO Tech Crew of the Year nomination. Being part of Seachurch’s tech crew, where collaboration and creativity thrive, has been an amazing journey. This nomination is a testament to the hard work and dedication we’ve all put in, especially over the last three years.
