The American people face a challenge in electing a President from a choice of 2-candidates (excluding 3rd party wannabees) with starkly different views of domestic politics and international affairs. Trump is not the problem but rather a symptom of decay in the American body-politic. It is the American voter that poses the greatest risk to America's future. If culture-war thinking prevails, and Americans dispense with critical thought and policy concerns, the Republic might face serious woes.

16th BRICS Summit in Kazan fails to inspire confidence. All BRICS Member States still grossly underperform the very G7 Member economies they were projected to displace. Lack of structural coherence challenges BRICS' future. Russia's war economy points towards fundamental weaknesses of Putin regime and its challenging future.

Lebanon marks the site of the latest destruction of sites of cultural, religious and historic value. Wednesday, Israeli forces are reported to have destroyed the 2,100 year of Shrine of Benjamin in Southern Lebanon. The entire village of Mhaibib, itself rich with historic structures, is reported to be lost.

From Ukraine to Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Iran to places across the globe, the loss of sites and artefacts of cultural, historic, religious, architectural and artistic value have been lost to destruction and looting at an alarming rate and unfathomable scale. In the context of brutal warfare where war crimes are commonplace, prosecutors routinely fail to prosecute the crimes surrounding such destruction making looting and misappropriation highly lucrative.

Saudi Arabia increased the price of Arab Light Oil. Their BRICS partners Russia and China are divided on the issue as Russia needs the extra cash and the increase threatens to derails Beijing's efforts to bolster its economy.

If Russia suffers further production, refining and storage facilities attacks and/or attacks on its oil tankers damage its market capacity even further, Saudi Arabia could be the big winner. Iran and Russia's market share may be up-for-grabs soon.

During his US visit President Zelenskiy toured an arms factory in Scranton, Pennsylvania accompanied by elected officials at all levels of Pennsylvania politics, each Democrats. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is now demanding that Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova be fired by President Zelenskiy claiming she interfered in American politics during an election cycle.

Johnson's demand is not only a peculiar public spat with a key US ally but misguided. Johnson is well aware of protocol surrounding visits of foreign dignities and the normal constraint of the accompanying entourage to be elected officials. Johnson's rant has more to do with an appeal to the populist base of the Republican party than and the reality that Pennsylvania's elected officials are members of the Democratic party than any real complaint about Ambassador Markarova doing her job.

Russia benefits from Iranian drones, UAV technology, intelligence sharing, illicit sanctions evasion guidance and now missile transfers. Sure, Iran gets nuclear technology and some cash but the real benefit for Iran may be keeping the world’s focus on Ukraine. Is Russia becoming an Iranian proxy?

Organisers of the Toronto International Film Festival temporarily cancelled screenings of the documentary "Russians at War" which has been decried as a propaganda piece. Claiming "Hundreds" of threats, TIFF's CEO announced the cancellation of further screenings only to resume them following the Toronto Police Service indicating there were no "active threats". The credibility of TIFF organisers have only added to the serious questions about the production of "Russians at War" which has been described as seeking to turn Russian invaders of Ukraine into "victims".

International film festivals in Toronto and Venice are screening a movie by a Russian propagandist that portrays invading Russian volunteers and soldiers as "victims" in the war in Ukraine. Ethical questions about the use of arts festivals for propaganda continue to plague attempts to restrain Russia's 'soft diplomacy' that supports their unbridled war in Ukraine which has featured war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Elected after a run-off election to determine the successor to Ebrahim Raisi following his untimely death in an accidental helicopter crash in May, the agenda of President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian has remained uncertain. In message authored by Pezeshkian and published in the Tehran Times on 12 July, he offered broad-stroke assertions pertaining to far-ranging issues. His attempt to project meaning to shape the world view of his Presidency has been met with varying degrees of acceptance, suspicion or rejection, depending on who opines. It is worth reading.

The decision of our State Broadcaster to exclude Dublin's Independent candidates in favour of sitting MEPs and Oireachtas party candidates is a stab-at-the-heart of European and democratic principles of fairness. Excluding minority voices is not only a dangerous act that strikes at the idea of inclusion which has attended the European ideal but feeds into the sense of alienation for marginalised people - often driving them towards fringe ideas, fears of conspiracies and extremist, anti-institutional views.

At least one Independent candidate accused RTE of trading preferable treatment for Oireachtas parties in exchange for a 'light touch' on funding in the aftermath of RTE's many scandals that saw the resignation of a previous Director General.
