Brought Up In The Jungle EP by The SceptreZ

Released on 27.06.2023

The Band you have here is Mr Z himself. Norm Elliott on Drums, Bass, Guitar and Vocals.

Welcome to NormZ Studio. Dealing with all the machines, buttons, sliders and computer software, this recording was rediscovered after 3 years and remastered. 4 rough, raw and undiluted Rockabilly tracks in NormZ style. Here is one EP more for the history books and for your collections. If you like Norm & The Nightmarez this is a must have. For everyone else these are 4 fun tracks you should have.

Track by Track
1.: Two Left FeetZ: Rockabilly meetZ Country. Cool rhythm from the strumming Guitar supported by an easy going Drum beat and a soft Bass sitting in the background. Nice twangy and reverb loaded Guitar riffs to top it off. NormZ unmistakeable voice is not even tripping over his own two left feetz and give it a Johnny Cash feel, that you will bop too.
2.: Pieces Of My Mind: Finger picking full bodied sounding Guitar to elevate this love song. The Bass is just feather light dancing to the track. Drums kept to a minimum in the background.
3.: There’s Gonna Be A Fight: Well, lets fight then. Slap-Bass like punching fists. Twangy Guitar used for the speed of the fight and Drums as sneaky as an ambush. At this stage of the EP it is obviously the lyrical beginning of Norm & The NightmareZ. Fun loving with a twist to the dark humorous side of Norm.
4.: Brought Up In The Jungle: Up-Tempo just to get your hip shaking. Loaded with rhythm and a Slap-Bass that make you jump & jive. Great Drums to lift the track and still just sitting in the back (door). Swinging riffs on the quieter part that will make you fall in love with this song. Listen to the lyrics, they make you smile (well i was laughing).

Neon Sounds by The Delta Bombers

The Delta Bombers consist of Chris Moinichen on Acoustic Guitar and Vocals, Andrew Himmler on Guitar, Gregorio Garcia on Slap-Bass and PJ Franco on Drums.

The Wolf is not Howlin any more. He ran away and found the Neon Sound. 11 releases in and number 12 hits a new height. The most mature record produced by Mark Neill. New, interesting and a step in a new direction with a fatter sound but without losing the well known Delta Bombers sound and roots feeling.

Track by Track:
1.: Hey! You Know You Wanna: The 20 second intro will blow your speakers into the next century. Hard hammering TomToms and a Kick Drum that says it all. Deep down bass to rattle your spine merges with the unmistakable Acoustic Guitar. The lead guitar is sneaking it’s way in until it is right on top of you together with the vocals. Even on the quieter parts which are used for a Guitar solo and a Drum Roll underpinned by a deep Bass will get you feet moving. The refrain is not overused and encourages you to sing or shout along with the song. And the saying goes: Hey! You Know You Wanna.

2.: Good Disguise: Short sharp reverb heavy Guitar riffs that draws in the Acoustic Guitar to never slow down. Rolling marching drums that have been heavily influenced by roots and jazz painting an oh-so-cool background. For the complete picture, the bass is rumbling just ever so slightly in the background and gives the track a fatter sounding feel. Chris’ vocals are full, angry and natural but does not overpower the overall song.

3.: Matter Of Time: Leaning a bit on the 70’s Southern Roots. Great bass playing that drives the track straight forward and just invites the acoustic lead guitar to join. Nice clean sounds from the drums that never go wrong. This platform is used to present a very clear and honest vocal track.

4.: Dogs Of Pavlov: Well, someone had fun with Auto-Tune. Thank God that the Delta Bombers don’t need it! Great arrangement and track structure. It sounds like it’s been played backwards and stuffed with reverb loaded vocals, so this could be a homage to the band Pavlov’s Dog or a homage to a study about dogs. Well, no, it’s more the first choice and that ties in with the progressive roots rock that the Delta Bombers are going for in this track.

5.: The Ballad Of Big Al: How could I ever doubt that the old Delta Bombers sound is gone? Hard vibrant vocals hold the acoustic guitar close by its side. Beautiful drums ring into the song and the Bass is just right beside it. The lead guitar stays in the background and comes out with some steel guitar riffs only to step back again, and it’s all draped with a soft sounding Hammond Organ.

6.: Die A Little: I had to double take this one. Hand on my heart, this is Johnny Cash. The fingerpicking guitar, the bass and drums and the strumming acoustic Guitar just like The Man in Black. This brings tears to my eyes. The song is like real life. It is unbelievable how precise The Delta Bombers can take on an old and famous style and make it their own.

7.: Angel: A rhythm Guitar full of harmony that gives the go ahead to the orchestral drums and a full bodied bass that even fills in quiet spots. The Guitar just melds everything together. Nice inserts of a bell make this Angel really shine. Chris’s vocal range is great for this track as he keeps it rough and still refined.

8.: Seventh Son: Picking up the tempo again, and back to a stripped down raw sound, plus acoustic guitar with strings on fire. The lead guitar is playing a distinct riff that stays with you throughout the track. Cool, heavy-handed rock drums and a booming Bass. Backing vocals are being used to fill out the background and the Seventh Son singing his heart out right into your face.

9.: Hit The Floor: Pure riff intro that sets you up for a surf influenced up-tempo song. Vocals are shouting out loud and bring in the backing vocals while unknown to you the octave change is happening. Badass lead guitar riffs pulling you along the ride. The rhythm guitar is pushed to its limits to try to keep up with this thunderous Bass. A whirlwind- like Drum holds it all together and some sneaky keys playing in the background.

10.: Move Me: Sticking a bit with a rhythm n blues roots style. This sounds big. Nothing is left behind. Every single piece of this track is on the same level. You will move to this and raise your hand in unison. Layered with some Backing Vocals to fill it out perfectly.

11.: Wish I Knew: If every outro of an Album would sound like this, it would be heaven. Organ and bass (the bass is bringing a deep down cold feel to it) paving the way to a melodic and harmonic song of good-bye or is it a love song. It is fascinating the way Vocal and Rhythm melt into one.

Summary:
Well, for fans of The Delta Bombers this is a must have. For the ones sitting on a fence: just jump over and have a listen. From slow to fast, from melodic to harmonic: this Album has it all, with different styles worked into one glorious record. Every time I started a new song ,it was my favourite. So, at the end, all 11 tracks made it to the number one spot. And going by this album, there is no end in sight to slow this band down any time soon. BTW: If you ever get the chance to see them live, go. The energy they are radiating is unbelievable and infectious.

In their own words
We started in the late 70s, had a few line up changes throughout our career. First proper gig was at the Salisbury Hotel ( pub, really ) in Barnet North London. We carried on playing locally at The Orange Tree, The Royalty etc.
Our band influences are good beer and bad ladies! lol

Let’s have a listen to the tracks –

DEVILS HIGHWAY: Fantastic sample at the beginning taken from the reverend Jimmy Snow clip preaching against rock n roll in the mid 1950’s and saying how much the devils music effects you and the evil feeling it causes you….and because it’s all in the beat the beat the beat….Dave yells….Kick ass! ..and for sure this track is a real stomper…really showcases The Ricochets at their best….it’s for sure a wreckin’ dance floor filler…great stop mid way through, then here we go again…”looking for my soul night and day…go to hell!!” Turning up the volume to this top tune! What a great opener to this album…Awesome!!
SHE’S GONE: Guitar intro then boom we are in, ”, great stompin’ rockin’ tune, She’s Real Gone.. “Baby I’m Blue, I’m In Love With You”, just under 2 minutes of pure awesome rockin’ sounds, this one’s gotta be a crowd favourite for sure! I just gotta play it again daddios!!
CHAIN DOG: Great 4 times round stab section at the start from this, the title track of the album, once again powerhouse drumming from Ginger, fantastic vocals from Dave, non- stop fabulous slapping from Sam, and awesome guitar licks from Steve, this one really moves along and ends just as it started with the punchy staggered stops.
EASY ACTION: Another fantastic up-tempo tune, this one kick off straight from the start…”I can’t get no satisfaction, all I want is easy action baby”, so much power in a track that lasts 1:38…I dig it massively!
IN HELL: Nice ride cymbal intro, with an earie guitar and bass …then we’re in ..Dave shouts “let’s Go, nice chanting backing vocals on this number and interspersed with ahhhhs, ends just as it started with a nice slow haunting style. This is a really top tune folks.
AVIN’ IT LARGE: Fabulous instrumental…Starting off with a nice rim shot drum roll from Ginger swiftly followed by Steve’s great sounding geetar and Sam’s non stop slapping bass…. Great middle breakdown to let Ginger crack those drums with some terrific rolls, it then explodes once again and then a further stop to showcase Sams bass playing wow!..
JEANIE JEANIE JEANIE: Rocked up version of Eddie Cochrans famous track, Dave’s vocals really suit this cover version that’s slightly sped up to the original….loving this, let’s go!
LONG TIME DEAD: At 3:12 this is the longest tune on the album…This one moves along at a cracking pace, with a full on slapping bass, killer drumming, fab guitar work and rip-roaring vocals, it has a great story behind it, and for me a stand out track…
LITTLE SISTER: Powerhouse version of The Elvis Presley classic that gets the full Ricochets treatment…really like this up tempo version…absolutely superb!
PSYCHO: Kick starts with guitar and then followed with stabs on drums/cymbal then Dave yells “Awww Do I!”…, then in comes the slapping bass, drum roll in and then vocals…”High tempo track with a stompin’ drum beat and twanging guitar and thumping slap bass.. rip roaring vocals, Nice scream too and eerie laugh really love it! “It’s a psychological breakdown guess I got to go Psycho!!”
BLACK SLACKS: A great stomping tune and this for sure is a fantastic catchy version and makeover of this 1957 tune.
WOOLY BULLY: This track features Boz Boorer (The Polecats) on sax and what an awesome solo he does too! A real great version and always creates a fabulous and enthusiastic reaction when they play it live….great fun!
LIKE A TIGER: This was originally done by Fabian back in 1959, and is brought right upto date with this high octane version….great intro from Ginger, then swiftly followed by guitar and bass and then growling vocals from Dave….awesome break which takes this cover version to a different level…WOW!! I’ve gotta take just under 30 minutes to replay the whole album once again!!.. One word….awesome!!

“Joe & Marilyn/Forever” Norm & Jean

Released 01/07/2021 available on 7” vinyl by Crazy Love Records (www.crazyloverecords.de)

Reviewed 22/04/2022 by Brandon Anderson (www.rockabillyrarities.com)

Birmingham, UK rock and roll stalwart Norm Elliot teams up with Miss Jean Vincent for a lovely two track single featuring songs dedicated to legendary couple Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio. The single features two rocking original tunes featuring a perfect blend of music written by Norm Elliott and lyrics written by Miss Jean Vincent.

Vocals by Norm & Jean.

All Instruments played by Norm except double bass, played by Nile “The Rev” Robbins.

Produced by Norm and recorded at NormZ Studio in the West Midlands, England.

(C) Copyright 2021- N. Elliott & Miss Jean Vincent

Side A - “Joe & Marilyn” This tune starts out with some great guitar licks from Norm, setting the mood with some nice classic country/rockabilly influenced twang that rides perfectly with Norm & Jean’s call and answer style vocal layering, telling the story of Joe and Marilyn’s legendary love affair and the tragedy that surrounded it. It tells the true tale of Joe’s continued dedication to Marilyn, sending her flowers thrice weekly for twenty years after her death. Norm and Jean do a beautiful job with this one, demonstrating brilliant artistic chemistry together.

Side B - “Forever” is definitely on the softer and more sincere side of things, with a sultry and smooth vocal performance delivered by Jean. The song has a vibe that transports you to a smoky jazz bar in 1950s Chicago, complete with some great guitar playing from Norm and a slow droning bassline plucked by “The Rev” that adds just the right amount of tension to the longing in Jean’s haunting vocals. This is a song we would love to see performed live, it just feels like you have to see Miss Jean performing in her element to really let this one marinate and get the full Marilyn-esque performance she is laying down here. Great work!

This is a great single and features something a little different to the beer joint rock and roll we usually jam around these parts. “Joe & Marilyn/Forever” is a perfect Sunday evening listen to wind down and put you in a relaxed state. We hope to see future output from Norm & Jean!

Hear Me Now by The Jets

Reviewed by Holger E.

The Band: Bob Cotton – Slap Bass and Lead Vocals, Ray Cotton – Lead Guitar and backing vocals, Tony Cotton – Drums and backing vocals.

Do i really have to say any more than It’s The Jets. I guess i do. So The Jets are one of just a few family bands that are still around after over 40 years. They are not like fresh new wine, they are more like the well aged fine wine that has so many different flavours and fine notes that it will flatten you. Just the dynamic alone on stage is phenomenal. And just to top that The Jets are perfectionists on their instruments. Not to forget the songs that even after 40 years have relevance to all people who love Rock&Roll and Rockabilly. They even played with Bands like Led Zepplin, Meatloaf, Madness and Shakin Stevens and still after all that THEY HAVE FUN on Stage.

Track by Track
1.: Hear Me Now: Hear me Now is not only the title of this song but also the name of this Album and it will be one of those tracks that go down in history. Raw Rockabilly that delivers Ray’s Guitar riffs from another dimension combine this with Bob’s perfect Slap-Bass and a crystal clear Drum performance by Tony. Bob nailed the vocals to bring you right back to 1959. A roaring track.

2.: I’m A Rocker: Up-tempo Rock&Roll song with a Boogie-Woogie Piano that fills the background and a Brass section that compliments the lead vocals. Drums and Guitar laying down a swing like rhythm that gets you going. The Slap-Bass is slightly in the background to give this song a full sound at high speed. Ray is taking on the lead vocals for this amazing track.

3.: Annie: What a great combo of rock&roll and love song. Finger picking smooth Guitar that blends in to the vocals with a hint of country style. The Drum is keeping everybody in check especially the Slap-Bass which you expect to run wild any second.

4.: Much To Good (For You): Well it’s time for Doo-Wop Jets style. Melodic background vocals, simple harmonies full of passion and the feel that this song should be a movie soundtrack. Ray and Tony giving the perfect platform for Roberts vocals to shine at the front of this track.

5.: Call The Police: Full blown rock&roll track that has so much energy that you can power the whole house with it. And nobody will call the Cops when they hear this track. Ray’s Guitar riffs burning down any building with the help of Tony’s Drums. Using his Slap-Bass Robert is laying the tracks for his vocals to paint you the perfect scenario.

6.: Dreamy Eyes: Looking for inspiration to Johnny Tillotson’s Dreamy Eyes this slow down-beat love song is just showcasing the ability of The Jets not only to play Rockabilly. The arrangement of vocals, instruments and background instruments is a dream come true.

7.: It Is What It Is: Do you like modern Blues type music? Oh My God........ This just blew my mind. Hard heavy and more reverb that the whole album together on just the Guitar alone. Crystal clean punctuated Slap-Bass and Drum’s so dry that it just destroyed my ear drums. Cool heavy handed rhythm that brings you right back to the Delta where it came from.

8.: Girl Of The Thousand Dreams: Giving us all a nice break from the last song The Jets presenting you with a new love song that has a touch of the 60’s and up-tempo Chicago Doo-Wop. Full of harmonies and melodies that always takes you by surprise.

9.: Jezebel: Covering the great Frankie Laine and turning it into a Jets song is brave but once you hear it, it makes sense. You can pick out so many influences that Robert, Ray and Tony worked into this track to make us all understand their love for all those artists.

10.: Stand By For Action: Well what would be a Jets record without a bit of Neo-Rockabilly. The Action is already happening for the last 9 tracks. In true fashion of The Jets this song has a tight arrangement that drags you on to the dance floor.

11.: Love You A Little Bit More: Just a bit more of Country/Hillbilly in this track. For sure they have the rhythm done to a T. To bend a mix of Steal-Guitar, Ukulele and Western style Fiddle just to be played by Guitar is phenomenal. Nice Drums that are in harmony with the Slap-Bass. And listen to the vocals they laid down on this track. Just brilliant.

12.: Cry: Doo-Wop? Yes please. Acapella? Oh yes. 3 brothers one melody and plenty of harmonies. The magic happening between Robert, Ray and Tony is unbelievable. You have to wonder if they go back in time only to bring back such a Masterpiece.

13.: Little Doll: Jump, Jive and Twist. Nice mid-tempo to build you back up after the last song. Stripped down to just a Snare played with brushes, a Slap-Bass that is more caressed that slapped and a Guitar with some reverb but fingerpicking good. That is as raw and pure as you can get.

14.: You Are My Temptation: Time to say goodbye to us. The Jets presenting us one last time with a Doo-Wop song that will stay with you for a long time. Ray and Tony deliver great backing vocals in pitch perfect harmony. Robert brings his A-game Lead vocal to tie it all in to dreamy love song.

Frogman - Radio E.P.
Released 2021
Reviewed 01/02/2022 by Brandon Anderson (www.rockabillyrarities.com)

Frogman’s latest EP is an instrumental surf project organized by members of the bands Moscow Beatballs and the Red Elvises (Russian line-up). The release features two surf stompers, one being a rework of the legendary Tchaikovsky classical piece “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” given a proper big wave work out! The other being a surf ready version of a staple of Elvis’ live shows “See See Rider” (stylized as “Sea Sea Rider” for this release)

Frogman is the brainchild of Red Elvises guitarist Yuri Krivoshein featuring Timur Popovkin on bass guitar and Aleksandr Timofeev on drums. Be on the lookout for the follow-up album from Frogman and Friends Surf Corps featuring guest appearances from folks like Deke Dickerson, Chuck Hughes (Hillbilly Hellcats), Danny B. Harvey and more!

“Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” is a great revision of a classical piece known by literally everyone (if you played Tetris you know this song note for note). Frogman and his cohorts give the centuries old song a great breath of fresh air with an original twist on things thanks to the clean and tone-rich guitar of Yuri Krivoshein. Sometimes it is hard to give classical music a rock rework but Tchaikovsky’s classic works well with the middle eastern rhythms and staccato picking of surf music, making them almost go hand in hand together for a stroll down the beach.

“Sea Sea Rider” Elvis spent a lot of time in Hawaii but he never caught the surf bug I guess. Well, Yuri and the boys have him covered with a great rework of Elvis’ now infamous opening theme music from his sequined jumpsuit days in Vegas. Frogman does The King proud sending the original into orbit with a hopped-up rhythm that feels more like Elvis in 1955 than Elvis in 1975, we love it!

If you dig no nonsense surf rock than get on it and go download the latest from Frogman including his newest full-length album Surf Corps. Yuri and the boys, come with top quality surf tunes that will keep you warm this winter and begging for sand and sun!

Track 1 - “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”
Track 2 - “Sea Sea Rider”

Frogman is the instrumental surf project organized by members of the bands Moscow Beatballs and Red Elvises (Russian line-up). They offer a terrific show programed with the traditional sounds of bands like the early The Shadows, Dick Dale, and The Ventures; transforming the atmosphere of their shows back to the dance and beach parties of the 50s - 60s. The Greatest Bet by Los Hell Gamblers

Released on 14/10/2021
Reviewed on 30/12/2021
Reviewed by Holger E.

The band consists of “El Don” Orlando on Slap-Bass, Luis Choky on Lead Guitar, Billy Banjo on Second Guitar, “El Terror De Las Nenas Lindas” Rey on Drums and Psycho Monchi on Vocals
Founded in 2007 by five friends in the city of San Juan(Puerto Rico), Los Hell Gamblers they are influenced by a variety of 50’s icons and Psychobilly/Punk Bands.

The scene in Puerto Rico is well developed and is producing a bunch of amazing band’s that fall under the umbrella of Psychobilly.

Track by Track Review:

1.: On The Road: Heavy guitar riffs with a simple count in from the Drums, developing into hard hitting Punk sounding Drums leaning towards Metal and keeping the Guitars screaming in speeding succession. The Slap-Bass is slotted into the background to give the track a fuller sound. Los Hell Gamblers use an aggressive Punk vocal and layered them just perfect with the second vocal which is used in the chorus as the backing vocal.

2.: Crossbone Prince: Simple Guitar riff that will follow you through the whole track and give the song an evil feel. The Drums sound larger than life and are just unbelievable. The Guitars are powering this track into the next Millennium. The vocals remind me a bit of Danzig and are accompanied by some awesome female background vocals for beautiful harmonies.

3.: Skullbone Princess: This is the first time where you can hear the ability of “El Don” on Slap-Bass. Cool Punk riffs mixed with some big Drums to manifest the song of the Princess in to history. This track is a combination of all musical influences Los Hell Gamblers had and still have.

4.: Viuda Negra: It’s getting darker. Dark Guitar riffs sounding like the mix of Metal and Punk with a cool Slap-Bass that gives you the feel of new style Psychobilly and unstoppable Drums. Still this track is full of harmonies and melodies.

5.: The Greatest Bet: Here comes the Psycho Slapping that Bass until the world ends to win the Greatest Bet and not to be outdone by 2 screaming Guitars and having the support of the genius Rey on Drums to make this song worthy as an Album name.

6.: El Diablo: It’s getting heavy. Reverb heavy screaming Guitars that play riffs and licks that sound like a mix of Psychobilly and Metal. The Drums are just a whirlwind of perfect hits on Toms, Snares, Cymbals and Kick Drum and gets the best support from the Slap-Bass with his finger shredding speed on the strings. With all the vocals it could easily be in the category of Gothabilly.

7.: Hamblame Vulgar Rude Drums that will shake your spine. Well here you have the perfect answer to offensive, rude, obnoxious, tasteless talk in one package of string bending screaming Guitars , a Slap-Bass that will kick your backside and Vocals that pretend to be nice, harmonic and melodic. Yeah right. This is a track that will get you ready for any Mosh-Pit.

8.: PsychoRican: Innocent finger picking Guitar with finger licking cool Slap-Bass in the background been supported by some unbelievable soft and easy played Drums and it all turns into finger shredding Guitar riffs with Psycho Slap-Bass and hammer hard Drums. The vocals are a perfect match and shows that Psycho Monchi is more than able to change his style and tone of voice.

9.: Baby louie: Is that Rockabilly? This fun track is the first tune that I have every heard with such a well timed Kick Drum and Slap-Bass together. Slick Slap-Bass that hums like a V8 and plays in cool harmony with the Guitar. The rhythm gets your legs moving within seconds and that slick Drum just keeps on giving.

10.: The Devil Shake: Will you Shake?......... Rock & Roll with heavy Guitar riffs that are supported by a Psycho Slap-Bass that just keeps on giving and Drums that will push you over the edge until you shake.

11.: Amor De Ultratumba: This fast track from beyond the grave will catch you and haunt you until you know what Psychobilly from Puerto Rico really is. Hard, heavy and fast.

12.: See You In Hell: If Hell is that loud, aggressive and cool sounding I want to go there. Again the Los Hell Gamblers performed a miracle with this track of screaming Guitar, bass heavy Drums and heavy slapping from the Bass and topped it with some awesome vocals.

13.: Juan Vieer: Six and a half minutes of dark scary Puerto Rica Psych-Metal. Lucky number 13. This is one hell of a track to finish the Album. Just go on https://open.spotify.com/artist/3z7dChFuBgGvp3r2AQLeMu?si=MD6TjEdqQam4ar8jrzBr1w and listen to it. It will blow your mind.

Summary:

Starting from the end of this Album after six and a half minutes of Heaven. This is one Band you have to put into your Spotify playlist and have the volume turned up to 11! Monchi is able to change his vocal appearance to fit right in to the songs and to present them so well. Orlando is showing his talent on the Slap-Bass that makes you want to hear more and more with each track. Manny and his Drums , what can i say.... the mix of hard, heavy to soft is so flawless that you have to really listen to it and he is the driving force behind these tracks. Armando and Luis are trading blow on their Guitars like a good old Metal Band from back in the days and still keeping harmonies going. These two are more than Guitar players. They are the fourth cambers of the Heart that beats The Los Hell Gamblers.
