We have lost a giant of broadcasting and one of life's true gentlemen. Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh was the epitome of class. Not only did he mark my card in Ceann Sibéal for my golf handicap, he gave me great encouragement and advice in my broadcasting career. Micheál, more recently, kindly contributed his voice to Kerry Mental Health Association's sponsorship of the water break timeouts in match commentaries on Radio Kerry during Covid. I performed in my first summer season in Siamsa Tire 40 years ago. I was honoured to be invited to launch this year's season last night in my role as General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association.
Siamsa Tíre is a great example of how the can help our mental health - Connect | Be Active | Keep Learning | Give | Take Notice.
The performers, mostly from communities in Kerry, CONNECT with each other and the audiences who travel from near and mostly far to see the shows for over 55 years.
Performing is a great way to BE ACTIVE. The performers GIVE the gift of joy and entertainment to the audiences who in turn give their appreciation through applause and encouraging others to book a ticket.
The cast and audiences are provide with an opportunity to KEEP LEARNING new songs, music and dances.
Finally, our elected and hoping-to-be elected representatives, Kerry County Council Executive and Irish Arts Council need to TAKE NOTICE of the importance of the Siamsa Summer season, as much as the theatre itself. Indecision and indifference from people with the decision-making power is having an impact on the mental wellbeing of so many people. Go to a show. Invite a friend or bring the family. Trust me, you'll enjoy it while the cast, your neighbours, will enjoy performing for you.

I am very sad to hear that my friend and colleague, Padraig Harnett, has passed away. He was passionate about sport, especially soccer, and he did so much to promote it through his involvement in the Kerry Schoolboys and Girls League. He was a reliable source of news whenever he reported from games - soccer, GAA and basketball - on Radio Kerry Sport. Pádraig was a Nottingham Forest fan who, no doubt, was happy with their win over Liverpool last weekend. I am sending my condolences to his wife Maura and extended family. Rest in peace Pádraig.
