Heartbreak for Men’s Rugby Sevens beaten by Fiji in quarter-final, 5 Irish boxers benefit from byes into last 16 in Boxing draw and Taoiseach Simon Harris visits Team Ireland in the Olympic village.

In last night’s quarter-final the Men’s Rugby Sevens team were beaten 19-15 by reigning Olympic champions Fiji ending their hopes of contesting the medals at these Games. James Topping’s side will now contest the 5th – 8thplacings with a game against USA on Saturday afternoon (July 27th).

Following last night’s draw five of the ten strong Irish boxing team will benefit from byes into the last 16 of the competition.

Rugby Sevens
Ireland Men's Sevens endured heartbreak in Paris on Thursday night as a narrow 19-15 defeat to back to back Olympic champions Fiji ended their medal hopes at a sold out Stade de France.

Chay Mullins scored a first-half double for Ireland to give James Topping's men the half-time lead (10-7) in tonight's quarter-final clash. When Down’s Zac Ward finished brilliantly in the corner at the start of the second (15-7), Ireland harboured big ambitions of progressing through to Saturday's semi-finals.

However Fiji - the gold medallists in both Rio and Tokyo - hit back with two quickfire scores to complete a second-half comeback and book their place in the final four, while Ireland drop down to the 5-8 place play-off matches when the Sevens resumes in Saint Denis on Saturday.

Giving his reaction post-match Ireland head coach James Topping said; “It's obviously a bitterly disappointing result for us because we came to Paris with ambitions of a podium finish. We controlled large parts of the game and put ourselves in a strong position but a couple of mistakes cost us dearly, and unfortunately against teams like Fiji you are going to be punished.

“The group are devastated because we've worked hard over the year building into this campaign, but we still have work to do because we want to finish strongly and on a high. We have a rest day tomorrow and we'll dust ourselves down to come back better for the placing matches on Saturday afternoon.”

Ireland will now face USA in their placing match at 2pm Irish time (27th July), while afterwards hosts France will face South Africa in the first semi-final, with Fiji set to take on Australia in the second.

Boxing
The much-anticipated draw took place earlier this evening at the North Paris Arena attended by Irish Head Coach Zauri Antia, coach Damian Kennedy, and Performance Director Tricia Herberle. Three of Team Ireland’s boxers were seeded in that draw; Lightweight (60kg) Kellie Harrington 3rd seed, Middleweight (75kg) Aoife O’Rourke 2ndseed, and Heavyweight (92kg) Jack Marley 7th seed.

There were byes for defending lightweight champion Kellie Harrington (60kg), Wicklow flyweight Daina Moorehouse (50kg), Bantamweight Jennifer Lehane (54kg), featherweight Michaela Walsh (57kg) and in the men’s draw fellow featherweight Jude Gallagher (57kg).

Aoife O'Rourke, who was 2nd seed in the 75kg, did not benefit from a bye because there were only 16 in the Middleweight division and she faces a very familiar opponent in Poland's Elzbieta Wojcik.
Offaly welterweight Grainne Walsh (66kg) is the only Irish woman who will box in the round of 32 where she faces Hungary's Anna Luca Hamori.

In the last 16 Kellie Harrington will face either an Italian (Alessia Mesiano) or Turk (Gizem Ozer) on Monday afternoon (29th July). Daina Moorehouse faces French fighter Wassila Lkhadiri who is seeded 7th, Jennifer Lehane faces 8th seed Yuan Chang of China, as does Michaela Walsh in facing Bulgaria’s Svetlana Staneva.

Jude Gallagher (57kg) was the only male Irish boxer to benefit from a bye, lining him up against Carlo Paalam of the Philippines in the last 16. Lightweight Dean Clancy (63.5kg) will face Obada Alkasbeh of Jordan in the preliminary round (of 32) and he is first of the Irish into action on Saturday.

Welterweight Aidan Walsh (71kg) meets Makan Traore of France in the preliminary round and, with only 16 in the heavyweight division Dubliner Jack Marley (92kg) will face Poland's Mateusz Bereznicki in his opening bout.

Afterwards Team Ireland Head coach Zaur Antia said: “There is no easy fight in the Olympic Games. Every fight will need the full focus of our boxers, just as they do at every competition.”

With ten Irish boxers taking to the ring, this is Team Ireland’s largest boxing team since Rome of 1960 and only Australia (12) and Ukbekistan (11) will have more boxers in Paris.
Ireland is also one of only three countries to have qualified a boxer in all of the six women’s weights.

Taoiseach’s visit
Earlier today Taoiseach Simon Harris spent the morning in the Olympic village meeting Team Ireland athletes and support staff. Road cyclist Ryan Mullen was on hand to tour the village and the Irish set-up with him, as was swimmer Daniel Wiffen and several of the boxers.

The Taoiseach also met with designer of Team Ireland’s Ceremony suitings Laura Weber who kindly gifted the Wicklow native with his embroidered country crest similar to the ones the athletes will wear on their sleeve to the Opening Ceremony. Tomorrow, before attending that much-anticipated Opening Ceremony the Taoiseach will meet with more of Team Ireland at the Irish Cultural Centre in the heart of the city.

Flagbearers
Tomorrow Team Ireland will announce their Flagbearers for the spectacular Opening Ceremony of these Olympic Games.

Men’s Rugby Sevens narrowly beaten by New Zealand and face Fiji in quarter-final tonight

Ireland Men's Sevens suffered an agonising late defeat to New Zealand in their final Pool A match at Stade de France this afternoon, but James Topping's side have still progressed through to tonight’s quarter-finals in Paris, where they will meet reigning Olympic champions Fiji.

A dominant first half performance had put Ireland in a strong position to complete a clean sweep of victories in the opening round but New Zealand responded strongly after the interval to sn**ch victory at the death, emerging 14-12 winners in front of another sell-out crowd in Saint Denis.

Ireland's first half tries came courtesy of Zac Ward and Jordan Conroy, with Mark Roche converting the second to give Topping's side a 12-0 half-time lead, but there was disappointment at the final whistle as the Kiwi side went over for their second try of the half, and saw it converted to take the win and the coveted top spot in Pool A.

Ireland must now turn the page quickly in preparation for tonight's quarter-final clash with defending Olympic champions Fiji at 9pm Irish time. Fiji topped Pool C after beating hosts France 19-12 earlier this afternoon.

Speaking afterwards, Irish Head Coach Topping said: "It was a disappointing result for us as we were unable to take a number of scoring opportunities, and at this level, and against a side of New Zealand's quality, you're going to be punished. However we now have to take the learnings from that and focus on a huge quarter-final tie ahead."

Boxing
The much-anticipated boxing draw takes place at the North Paris Arena at 6.15pm Irish time this evening. Three of Team Ireland’s boxers are seeded in that draw; Lightweight (60kg) Kellie Harrington 3rd seed, Middleweight (75kg) Aoife O’Rourke 2nd seed, and Heavyweight (92kg) Jack Marley 7th seed. Full details of the draw will follow later.

Two wins out of two for Men’s Rugby Sevens as they beat Japan 40 - 5

Men’s Rugby Sevens
Ireland Men's Sevens completed a strong opening day in Paris as they recorded a six-try defeat of Japan in their second Pool A outing to stay on course for quarter-final qualification on Thursday.

Following their earlier success over South Africa, James Topping's side were emphatic 40-5 winners over Japan at a sold-out Stade de France on Wednesday evening, leaving them level with New Zealand on six points at the top of Pool A after the All Blacks Sevens overcame South Africa 17-5 in their second game.

Ireland and New Zealand go head-to-head for top spot in Pool A at 3.30pm Irish time on Thursday, with the top two sides automatically booking their place in the quarter-finals.

Dubliner Terry Kennedy scored his second try of the Games and then set up Chay Mullins in the first half to give Ireland a 14-0 lead at the break, before captain Harry McNulty, Niall Comerford, Mullins and Zac Ward ran in second half scores.

Speaking afterwards, McNulty said: "It's a really encouraging opening day for us and it's job done in terms of two wins from two. It's all about a huge Pool game against New Zealand tomorrow afternoon as we want to progress through as winners and give ourselves the best possible draw in the knockout stages.

"We have had incredible support in Paris today and it has been electric playing in front of this crowd, so we're excited to come back tomorrow to raise our game and hopefully progress through the competition."

Boxing
Having settled well into the Olympic village since their arrival the Irish team of ten are continuing in the grand tradition of great Irish boxers that have walked this path before them by training in the underground car park on site. The team doesn’t need to travel to the off-site venues for rings or bags at this point in their competition taper.

All eyes will be on the draw which takes place at the North Paris Arena tomorrow evening at 6pm Irish time. Three of Team Ireland’s boxers are seeded in that draw; Lightweight (60kg) Kellie Harrington 3rd seed, Middleweight (75kg) Aoife O’Rourke 2nd seed, and Heavyweight (92kg) Jack Marley 7th seed.

Winning start for Men’s Rugby Sevens team as they defeat South Africa in opener

Ireland Men's Sevens kickstarted their Paris 2024 Olympic campaign with a brilliant 10-5 victory over South Africa in their Pool A opener at Stade de France on Wednesday afternoon.

James Topping's side were the first of Team Ireland in action at these Games and certainly delivered with a possession-dominant performance in Saint Denis, as Jordan Conroy and Terry Kennedy went over for tries in either half.

The opening game win puts Ireland in a strong position in Pool A heading into their second outing against Japan later this evening at 8pm Irish time. The Japanese side suffered defeat to New Zealand in the other Pool A clash this afternoon.

Having battled with South Africa all season on the HSBC SVNS Series, it was always going to be a tough challenge first up for Ireland but they dominated first-half possession to take a 5-0 lead into the interval, as Conroy's score on the buzzer was just reward for a strong opening half showing.

Kennedy extended Ireland's lead in the second period, the St Mary's man continuing his prolific try-scoring form this season with his first score of the Paris 2024 campaign.

South Africa responded late in the second half through Selvyn Davids but Ireland remained resolute in defence to see out an important win ahead of their second Pool A game against Japan later today.
Speaking afterwards Irish head coach James Topping said: "It's a really important win for us to start the tournament as we've had some incredible battles against South Africa over the last season and there's nothing between the sides. We were excited to get the Games underway for Team Ireland and wanted to deliver a performance that reflected our ambitions in this tournament, so we're pleased with the win.

"We now need to turn the page quickly, rest, recover and prepare for another big challenge against Japan this evening, as there are improvements to be made across the board. It's a positive start but it's only that and we'll work hard now to ensure we step up again this evening."

Men’s Hockey
Earlier today Team Ireland’s Men’s Hockey team had a practice session alongside South Africa at Stade Olympique Yves -du-Manoir (aka Stade Colombe) today. The venue for Ireland men’s hockey in Paris has huge sporting history as it was also the venue for athletics and rugby in the 1924 Summer Olympic Games and the exact site of Eric Liddel and Harold Abrahams’ famous battle for 100m glory, which was later heroically portrayed by the film Chariots of Fire.

Ireland’s first group game is against Belgium on Saturday (July 27th) at 9.30am Irish time. Speaking afterwards defender Kyle Marshall said: “It’s absolutely special to be here when you look around at all of the boards around the pitch and they’re plastered with ‘Paris’ and the Olympic Rings. I’ve never been anywhere like this before, nor have a lot of the team.

“The first day we came to training and got a great chance to take it all in. Now we’re getting familiar with the pitch. We’ve trained on it once and have trained on pitch two as well, which is where our first two games are on.

“We played against France twice in Lille in our pre-camp. Had a draw and a defeat; two good battles and we used those to emulate the game situation, so played all 16 of our squad to match the game situation and gave us a chance to identify what we need to work on.

Reflecting on the stadium’s history the Armagh player remarked: “You really do feel the history here when you’re walking around. You have all those things in your mind. It’s quite inspiring to know that Ireland’s first Olympic team was a team of about 48 here in Paris. That’s probably close to our staff now!

“It’s brilliant that 100 years later we have a record Team Ireland of 133 athletes; that’s amazing just in itself!”
