On the evening of December 11, 1920, a production of The Gondoliers is in full swing at the Cork Opera House when word comes through that the Black and Tans and Auxiliaries are rampaging through the streets and setting buildings on fire.

Songs for a Burning City, a fascinating work of imagined history, provides a kaleidoscopic account of the turmoil of that infamous night as seen through the eyes of individual members of the cast and audience.

The author: Ger FitzGibbon, former Head of Drama & Theatre Studies in UCC, now works as a freelance writer and director.

"Once you start reading this, you can’t stop, as you follow each person’s experience of that terrible night." Jo Kerringan in Echo Live: https://www.echolive.ie/nostalgia/arid-41380537.html

"I was conscious of the power of social history and that is more or less why I wrote the memoir. I wanted to write myself into existence and by so doing attempt to analyse those decades that I lived through." — Phyl Herbert talks about her memoir, The Price of Silence.

No newspaper celebrates its city more than does the Echo, Cork's daily newspaper, with its yearly pre-Christmas publication, The Holly Bough (going since 1897). A magnificent job this year by editor John Dolan, as can be expected. And we're especially happy, since it features a short extract from "Car Bombs and Barrack Busters", Dan Harvey's history of the Irish Army bomb disposal unit, which we published recently. It tells how a Cork officer put together an effective bomb disposal robot, the Army's first, from bits and pieces found in a local scrapyard.

The Deep End by novelist Mary Rose Callaghan tells of growing up in Dublin from the mid-1940s in a once well-off family fallen on hard times and forced at times to struggle with extreme poverty. Central to this enthralling and poignant memoir is the author's relationship with her flamboyant mother, which endured all the hardships and her mother’s descent into mental illness. In the end, the author realises that, despite all the pain and suffering, her mother left her one great gift for life.
