Planning approval for new 1,300-pupil school in Laois/Offaly

Coláiste Íosagáin, Portarlington has won planning permission for a new school to replace its existing facilities.
The new school with space for 1,300 pupils will replace the school that was built for 750 students.
After a decade of planning, the school board received the good news this week with no changes to the proposed plan.
'We are delighted,' said Coláiste Iosagáin principal Justin Brown.
"It is another important milestone for us. We are very fortunate as a school to have such parental and community support not just for this project but in general," the principal said.
The new school is hoping to open its doors in 2028.
"The timeline states that we should be in our new school in November 2028—and that is without any hiccups. It is good that the build will be going on without impacting the operation of our current school. At least with this project, the building site is totally separate to our existing school. We are assured this project will be state-of-the Art and a flagship project, so we are cautiously excited. We are in our Advent period now," the principal said.
Designed by Kennedy Fitzgerald Architects, the new school will be cover a vast 12,646 sq metres and would also incorporate a general purpose hall with ancillary PE accommodation, a library, staffroom, administration rooms, toilets and stores.
Some 104 car parking spaces are planned at the school, along with 120 bicycle parking spaces. Seven hard play or multi-use games courts are pencilled in for the site, along with a special educational needs garden and play spaces, activity courtyards, a grass pitch, and roof-mounted solar panels.
