The new policy will begin in Approved Housing Body homes, with hopes it will extend to private rentals in the future.

Dogs Trust has welcomed the move, saying it could stop families from having to give up their dogs when they move home.

At the moment, very few rentals allow pets — less than one in ten.

Last year alone, Dogs Trust got 431 calls from people who couldn’t keep their dog because of strict rental rules.
