This book details how the hardship suffered by the tenants on the Galtee estate, in the latter part of the 19th century was brought to public notice by John Sarsfield Casey, a native of Mitchelestown. His letters to both the Cork Examiner and Freeman’s Journal,so infuriated Patten Bridge, that he brought a libel action against Casey.The trial lasted eight days but the jury disagreed on its verdict
and, as a result,Casey was acquitted. This book contains journalist William O’Brien’s account of the conditions of the Galtee tenantry when he visited the area just a couple of weeks after the verdict. It also contains copies of Casey's letters to the newspapers; the affidavits sworn by tenants; official transcripts of the trial; reports of the trial carried in Irish, British and American newspapers showing how political ideology can bias accounts of fact; a list of the holdings visited by Mr. Patten Bridge’s departure from Galtee Castle and copies of the obituaries of both men after their respective deaths.
