Irish Athlete Derval O’Rourke says "To be a world-class athlete it’s important to develop a never-give-up attitude. When we race, we must back ourselves 100%. However this belief cannot be constant and there are times we struggle. The people employed to deal with high-performance athletes should be equipped to deal with both physical and mental difficulties. Historically there has been a focus on the body — tear a quad and within a few days you have an MRI scan. I think we need to spend time and money focusing on a healthy mind as well as a healthy body. Long-term, there cannot be one without the other"

“As we embark through 2014, there are so many topics I want to discuss but the one that keeps coming into my consciousness: the area of mental wellbeing for elite athletes” according to Derval O’Rourke

Have to say one of the most hard hitting interviews I have heard for a long time as former Ireland & Munster rugby player David Corkery joined the RTE John Murray Radio Show to discuss how the effects of retirement and the death of his father by su***de caused him to fall into a “very deep, dark hole” that crippled him emotionally. I think everyone out their would get a lot from listen to this interview even if you are not involved in sport. The former Irish and Munster player was know to be one of the hardest hitters and tacklers out on the pitch but of it, there was a different story. Excellent interview.

Sky Sports RAY WILKINS EXCLUSIVE: My battle with illness and depression.

Former midfielder opens up about his off the field problems.

Wilkins says he slipped into a deep, dark hole when he was axed as Chelsea coach.

Ex-Blues skipper says he relied on Va**um when he was captain at Stamford Bridge.

Says he felt like 'dirt' when found guilty of drink-driving.

Sacked Fulham coach keen to help others with similar problems.

Until now there has been no need to reveal his battle against depression. Or his dependency on Va**um as a teenage captain of Chelsea. Or indeed the acute embarrassment he has endured for more than 20 years because of the symptoms associated with suffering from ulcerative colitis. He has never consid...

It’s hard for Royce White to convince people he’s freaked out. On the court, the Houston Rockets’ top draft pick, a 6-foot-8 power forward, is a proven scorer and strong rebounder. But off court, White suffers ceaseless anxiety. He’s afraid to fly (in fact, he cut a deal with the Rockets to bus to g...

"The lifting of a mental weight can result in the strength and conditioning of the mind" - Guest article by former Leitrim inter-county footballer Colin Regan whose career spanned from the mid nineties to 2010. A former journalist and editor who still pens a weekly column with the Leitrim Observer, he now works full time as the GAA’s Community & Health Manager, coordinating a variety of health and community focused projects, including those relating to mental health and wellbeing. Here Colin discusses his personal insight and account when in 2010 was told he would never play football again which he really struggled to cope with as sport and exercise were always the way he blew off steam and now, when he needed a release valve the most, he was laid up and feeling pretty pathetic. Thanks Colin.

I was speaking with some friends recently about a mate of mine they all know. They were incredibly surprised to hear he had worked through some issues with his mental health a few years ago.

The Anxiety Athlete - Different athletes = Different circumstances = Different interventions are sensitive and needed.

The term anxiety is from the Latin word anxius, to choke. Every athlete and individual gets worried, anxious or stressed from time to time. Some athletes get anxious more than others and anxiety may lead to performing below par more than often. In the worst case scenario, if the performance anxiety…

It can be a lonely place at the top for such Football Managers as David Moyes. Recently Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini admitted to being lonely after 12 years of working abroad without having his family by his side. Despite the fame and fortune, being a football manager (or for that matter, a high performance coach in any other sport) is one of the most challenging and stressful jobs out there. Job insecurity, lots of travelling, long working hours, being the front man of a multi-million pound business, constant public scrutiny, unhappy spouses…The list is endless and it all adds to one of the worst lifestyles you can choose.

A lot of sport fans think that managers are paid a load of cash for pretty much looking after a bunch of overpaid prima donnas and that all they have to do is make sure the players don’t go out and drink too much and ensure they turn up for the game. Well, think again…

"My Lonely Life As An Athlete" by British Long Jump Athlete Jade Johnson. A very powerful insight at what it`s like for a lot of athletes at the top.

(I did this mandala a while back and it was part of my Life mandala collection. This represented my “root” or 1st chakra, which stands for safety and security. I called it “nothing” and it came to my mind as soon as i wrote this blog. I think it fits so well with how i feel at this point.)

"Put me back in, Coach!" - Psychology responses to sports injury

Anyone who’s ever been injured will be able to tell you about the range of moods and emotions that they experienced, both immediately after the injury, and in the following weeks or months. Anyone who says that they didn’t experience an emotional response following injury is clearly a robot, probab...
