Excited to say that a number of shows are about to be sold out! This is a first for us...don't be disappointed with shows at Billy Byrnes and Cleere's as that is where capacity is limited. Can't wait for Sunday!

For quite a few people, people who love cinema and watch quite a lot of it, this is their favourite film ever screened at Subtitle. The issues are complex and varied, but familiar: addiction, morality, personal responsibility and how they impact on relationships. Part of the reason why the film is so powerful is due to the magnetic performance of Anders Danielson Lie and the deft direction from Joachim Trier. OSLO, AUGUST 31st is one of the rare films that has become increasingly lauded with time and you can check it out on Monday 18th at 6.15pm in Cleere's.

So, the Danish Film Institute has a low-budget First Feature scheme and this was what funded Gustav Möller's astonishingly accomplished and confident thriller THE GUILTY, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018. It's a truly outstanding picture with a magnificent twist and although it's been re-made with Jake Gyllenhaal in the main role, nothing can touch the original. If you haven't seen this one and you like your thrillers tense and thriller-y, then this is a screening not to miss. Billy Byrne's 6.30pm on Tuesday 19th.

THE TEACHER'S LOUNGE was the official German entry to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film; it's a gripping drama, which explores themes of morality, prejudice and the complexities of school dynamics. For such a small country, Iceland continues to find fantastic filmmakers with great stories to tell; stories that are both local and universal, which is why they travel. We are delighted to screen Rúnar Rúnarsson's WHEN THE LIGHT BREAKS, which is a beautifully pitched exploration of grief, anchored by a remarkable performance from Elín Hall, who will be in Kilkenny.

So, based on ticket sales, one of the most popular titles that we are screening this year is the stunning Italian film, THE EIGHT MOUNTAINS. So, I guess you never know until you know, but ticket sales are up very significantly on last time out, so it looks like we are in for a bumper year! Make sure to get your tickets for screenings in the smaller spaces (notably Billy Byrne’s) as capacities are limited and some shows look like selling out. Just two weeks to go before our first screening!

Dag Johan Haugerund's film is a wonderfully subversive, candid and very funny examination of male sexuality...a sort of brilliant antidote to the presentation of toxic masculinity dominating much of our cinema today; and the kind of film that the Nordic and Scandinavian countries do better than anyone else. Norway, in particular, has been producing outstanding films for quite a while now (not the case when Subtitle started out) and this is yet another example. We love it.

It's great to see so many folk buying tickets so early! Physical brochures are out tomorrow, so you'll start to see them appearing in the city...from Savour through Kilkenomics to Subtitle, it's not a bad time of year to be in Kilkenny! There's a couple of Norwegian premieres that you definitely shouldn't miss: S*X, a romantic comedy-drama, which won Best European Film in February; and LOVEABLE, a brilliant drama with the leading actress, Helga Gruen coming to the festival. SICK OF MYSELF is also an outstanding Norwegian film, which screened in Dublin last year. WE CANNOT WAIT!

We are so happy that we can stage Subtitle again in Kilkenny! And it feels like a lot of people are happy that we are back (thanks for all the kind messages). Our dates are Sunday, November 17th to Saturday 23rd, finishing with the Angela Awards in the Set Theatre! We have some terrific pictures too-with a combination of brand new films, audience favourites from the past 9 years-and some Subtitle Selects. Also known as THE REALM, this is an absolutely corker of a thriller from Spanish director Rodrigo Sorogoyen—and lead actor, Antonio de La Torre is at his charismatic best. If you haven’t seen this one, do yourself a favour and don’t miss it! Tickets in bio.
