An absolutely stunning video from Irelandâs Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, celebrating not just St Patrick's Day, but a Century of Peace building, 100 years after our independence.
7 million people live on the Island of Ireland but for the 70 million of the Diaspora Ireland is a place called home. The people who live in Ireland are the survivors of Famine, Oppression, thought control and the failures of the two States on the Island of Ireland which resulted in mass emigration in the 20th Century. Often people in Ireland don't understand the pain of exile, the hardships endured and often the sense of failure and isolation the Diaspora felt to a Homeland which couldn't support them and just focus on the successes, not those who led lonely fractured lives abroad cut off from kith and kin.
They supported their homeland with their emigrant's remittances and in recent years returning home injecting money into the economy. That is why as a returning member of the Diaspora I remember how the world welcomed us and allowed us to build productive lives. We should not have short memories and should be grateful that Ireland is now a country where people want to live and achieve their aspirations.
