Dublin Digital Radio - ddr.

Dublin Digital Radio - ddr. Online community radio station representing a wealth of music, art and politics across Ireland. We are here to change that. Be surprised.

Dublin Digital Radio is an online digital radio station dedicated to providing a quality platform for the various communities striving to create a socially and culturally progressive city in a landscape netted with political stasis and tepid bureaucracy. We here at Dublin Digital Radio, believe it is time to break the mould with the medium of radio. The inanity of the licensed radios’ relationship

with advertisers, record labels, playlists and impartiality even when faced with the truth have no space on an online radio station that thrives on the medium it exists upon. Too long has the music scene in Ireland rip roared along without a radio platform to support it, to provide the link between what’s happening on the ground to the listener, the music lover that has been left behind by the cultural dearth on Irish national airwaves. Too long have social and political issues been silenced on the airwaves due to the puppet show of balance and too long off air are the days of the pirate radio when a degree of autonomy existed on the airwaves. DDR will be a platform for open ears delving into all that has been silenced, both musically and socially for too long. DDR will be a home in Ireland for all those with a passion for music, from the labels that are allowing the environment of independent Irish music to breathe to local DJ’s and music lovers, to those pushing the sound barriers on the classical end of things. DDR will be a space for conversations and debates, for stories and criticisms, a space to challenge all attempts to depoliticise culture. We want our listeners to fall in love again with radio and in the process creating a stronger environment for musicians, and listeners alike. Get your your router ready for DDR. Tune in every weekend.

ddr. NEW STUDIO LAUNCH!
1st Feb 12-8pm
live radio, live music performances, talks, St Brigid cross making, flash tattoos, food, and more.

Dublin Digital Radio are launching their new radio studio in Flux, 4 Chatham Row on Imbolc, the 1st of February. Our studio will be open to the public and broadcasting live DJs and performances from 12pm until 8pm. The music will be broadcast out onto the street outside from Chatham Row’s beautiful courtyard, the music spreading over the surrounding area like Brigid’s cloak. We’ll have food provided by friends of ddr., a discussion from ddr. members on developing sustainable alternative cultural spaces through radio, and for the day that’s in it, tattoo artist .hood will also be providing Brigid’s cross tattoos to those who really want to memorialise the occasion.

Music on the day will come from ddr. residents broadcasting their regular scheduled shows, and will also include live performances from ddr. Residents and friends. We will be resharing old radio work commissioned previously for Alternating Current and Dublin Fringe in the Gallery Space, delving deep into the station’s rich archive for a new collective listening experience, as well as screening Resonant Frequency, beautiful short documentary on the station.

The launch of the new studio is an incredibly exciting time for the station. The location, in the heart of the city centre, and the accessibility it offers the alternative cultural scenes that ddr. platform and champions to the public is something that hasn’t really been on offer in Dublin city in recent memory. So often these communities can only exist on the edges. Due to the housing and space crisis in Ireland, it is almost unfathomable that a listener funded, volunteer run organisation like ddr. could have such a central home. We are incredibly grateful to for providing this space to us, and for the cultural space they are trying to establish on Chatham Row, with love and care for the city around it.

THIS SATURDAY: Hackathon with

TU Dublin’s Live Music Research team needs your help in mapping Dublin’s live music ecosystem. From live music venues to the backrooms of pubs, rehearsal spaces to DIY spaces, record stores to youth halls, we want to create an interactive map that captures the spaces that make up Dublin’s diverse music scenes. We want to capture the past and the present of Dublin’s rich musical history so whether you consider yourself a rocker or a raver, a punk or a metalhead, a disconaut or a dancehall frequenter, we want your memories of Dublin’s musical spaces to help us develop our live music map.

We’re hosting a mini hackathon at Flux Studios Chatham Row on Saturday 18 January from 12pm until 3pm. As part of the hackathon, we also invite you to bring any visual memorabilia with you that you are happy to have scanned and archived as part of the project. Flyers, posters, zines, gig listing pages – we’d love to see what you have. We will also be broadcasting a panel discussion on the project on our second stream.

If you cannot attend on the day but would like to be kept informed of future events please email mailto:[email protected] or follow us on instagram

Ufuk a.k.a. Quasifission, became one of the prominent names with his conceptional sound in the areas hosted by Istanbul’s underground communities until he came to Dublin. He was a resident on Root Radio and also took a role on HKCR, Operator Radio and Noods Radio. Quasi uses clunky drums, hard breaks, creating battlefields of percussion packed with colossal kick drums, mechanical and glitchy clangs. He creates dynamic moments on an experimental background.

From Istanbul’s underground scene to Dublin’s airwaves, tune into ddr, December 4th, at 9 PM to experience his dynamic, experimental music.

ddr. TEST BROADCASTS AND OPEN STUDIO

Time: 12:00 - 20:00 (drop in any time)

Date: Saturday 30th November

Location: Flux Studios, Chatham Row, D02 PA06

It has been a little while since the last update and the time in which we mentioned we would be in the studio has maybe passed, and there is seemingly still no studio for you........fret not, as we are in the final stages of the worlds greatest ddr. The studio in Chatham Row is coming along nicely and we are nearly ready to open the door and listen to the floods of fantastic radio you will bring to the world.

As a preview for what’s to come, we have decided to host a test broadcast, soft opening on the 30th November. This daytime event will be the first ting ting in the studio and will be open to all to gather as a community, revel in ddr’s beauty, and check out the progress of the new studio! Volunteers who have been working on the studio over the past many months will be playing some tunes throughout the day and Flux have kindly allowed us to bring the sounds to the courtyard at the front of the building and make a little social of it all. We would be so happy to see as many of you as possible - this is an opportunity to get buzzed - whether you are a resident who will be broadcasting once the studio is open or a listener who wants to come down and hang out. The whole Flux building is a treat really so come and see for yourselves!

Note to Residents: We will officially begin live broadcasts in early December and the studio team will be in touch in the coming week with details of inductions. Our volunteers will also be on hand on the 30th to answer any initial questions and even book your induction slot if you haven’t gotten round to it by then!

Megan Nolan is a lifetime member of the rave. It’s a passion instilled in her from young and cultivated through over a decades worth of clubbing in the Irish capital and afar; now, it’s fully realised as a dj through her pseudonym Mercorn. A love of hard house, prog and trance forms the backbone to her sound, where these styles fuelled Ireland throughout its formative 90’s rave heyday, and thus you can expect to hear soaring basslines, giddy snare rolls and non-stop euphoria dominating her sets, with each selection cultivating an unmatched fizzing energy. This has gained her notable attention around the UK and Europe, with notable shows for some of London’s most celebrated Q***r parties in Adonis at The Cause, Big D**e Energy at Venue MOT and Fast & Bi-Furious at Dalston Superstore while also at home in some of Ireland’s best clubs such as Yamamori Tengu, Wigwam, Index. Mixes for Haŵs and Proxima too further her impressive cause.

Aside from DJing, Mercorn is an active community builder in her hometown of Dublin. This is most prevalent in her membership of collectives Skin&Blister and Tender. The former is a Dublin-based platform nurturing and encouraging female-identifying, trans and non-binary creatives in the realm of music and the arts. They have been instrumental in diversifying Ireland’s male-heavy presence in clubs, festivals and beyond. The latter is a party for qu**rs and allies founded alongside Bull Horris, Andrew and James. It’s a much-loved collective that runs some of the most raucous and inclusive parties in the city, giving platform to local talent and international acts who all fit their memo. She is also a pioneering independent designer with her MNW Design business 🧣
