The Madman’s Hotel. I can’t tell you how many people have come forward and reached out to me. Even on the street people stop to tell me stories of how their loved ones were put into institutions and never got out. The fact that this part of our history is largely ignored pisses me off. We constantly speak of “reducing the stigma” yet never speak of how the stigma was formed. It was the very definition of insanity that people were often put in asylums , sometimes treated barbarically with treatments with little to no efficacy, few got out and many died there. 1304 patients were buried in st.lomans with a f**king number, like prisoners. It is now just an empty field. I watched countless politicians canvass for votes and talk about mental health as if it’s this new thing that has just happened to our society. Unless they are willing to acknowledge what happened in our institutions and perhaps offer a state apology, they are not truly getting to the core of why our system today is still so dysfunctional. Whoever or next leader is @maryloumcdonaldsf @michealmartintd @simonharristd . This is something we now have to face. The more I do this work, it becomes clear those who were in power and currently in power really don’t want these stories told. Ignoring our history brings a lot of pain to the families still haunted by it. We have heard consistent promises in election cycles about mental health yet we still have yep to accept and acknowledge our past. I hope now @simonharristd and those who govern us do what’s right and offer a state apology. Hundreds of thousands of citizens of the state were badly failed. Let’s start with a memorial wall on the grounds of St.Lomans so @julieclarkecandles , her family and all the families can stop fighting for what is right.
