George Eogan's Excavations at Knowth

George Eogan's Excavations at Knowth Information on and news about the Royal Irish Academy's 'Excavations at Knowth' publications series A Royal Irish Academy publications project.

Knowth is located in the Boyne Valley in Co. Meath and, along with the monuments at Dowth and Newgrange, is part of the ancient Brú na Bóinne complex that is one of only three UNESCO World Heritage Sites on the island of Ireland (https://www.worldheritageireland.ie/bru-na-boinne/). The Neolithic passage tombs at Knowth date to approximately 3,200 BC. The site consists of one large tumulus (the Gr

eat Mound, which houses two large passage tombs) and 20 smaller satellite tombs. Overall, Knowth has had a history, though not continuous, of ritual and settlement spanning roughly six-thousand years—from the beginning of the Neolithic to the modern era. It is older than the Egyptian pyramids; older than Stonehenge. A major programme of archaeological excavation commenced on 18 June 1962 at the passage tomb cemetery at Knowth under the direction of George Eogan. This research continued on a seasonal basis for more than 40 years, resulting in the excavation of a considerable area of the monument complex. Knowth is a multi-period and multi-functional archaeological complex. The Royal Irish Academy (https://www.ria.ie/) has the responsibility and the privilege of bringing the invaluable research work undertaken at Knowth into the public domain, through our Excavations at Knowth series of publications. To date, six volumes have been published in the series (https://www.ria.ie/bookshop/category/excavations-knowth-1006/type/publication), which has been produced on behalf of and with the support of the National Monuments Service of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage a (https://www.gov.ie/en/policy/596fa-heritage/). The seventh volume, which will present the megalithic art from Knowth, is currently in preparation. In August 2018, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the rediscovery of the eastern tomb beneath the Great Mound, we ‘launched’ the electronic version of the series as an open-access resource (https://www.ria.ie/news/knowth), via the Digital Repository of Ireland (https://repository.dri.ie/catalog/8910z856b).

Sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues past and present of Raghnall Ó Floinn. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

The staff of the National Museum of Ireland past and present are deeply saddened to learn of the death of our former Director and dear colleague, Raghnall Ó Floinn.

Raghnall joined the National Museum of Ireland as an Assistant Keeper in the Irish Antiquities Division in 1976. He went on to become the first Head of Collections in 2003, then Director in 2013 until his retirement in 2018.

It is impossible to overstate the contribution that Raghnall has made to the National Museum and to the field of Irish archaeology. His interests ranged from antiquarianism to Iron Age and early Medieval Ireland, Medieval period reliquaries and beyond. He was internationally renowned as a Viking scholar. Raghnall’s contribution is reflected in his vast range of publications and in exhibitions across the National Museum as well as many other museums at home and abroad. We will all remember him too as a kind and generous colleague and friend.

Our thoughts are with his wife Edel, his daughter Sorcha, his son Muiris, his brothers and sisters and his extended family at this sad time.

We will be closing the Museum of Archaeology on Kildare St. early on Friday 13th of December at 1pm in memory of our colleague and to enable staff to pay their respects.

Review by Neil Jackman (Abarta Heritage) of the ~Knowth guide in the current issue of Books Ireland Magazine! '... the guide is beautifully designed and well structured ... It isn’t easy to condense the weight of information from Knowth to create something engaging as well as informative, yet the contributors have succeeded well. The guide they created ... serves as a welcome light as you navigate Knowth’s deep passageways of time.' Read Neil's full review here: https://booksirelandmagazine.com/knowth-a-welcome-light-to-navigate-the-deep-passageways-of-time/ And you can get a copy of the book from The Royal Irish Academy here: https://shop.ria.ie/products/knowth or at the Brú na Bóinne - Newgrange and Knowth Visitor Centre. Exciting news! The new publication on Knowth by the Publications team at The Royal Irish Academy has landed. It's a guide to the site, and 'offers a general overview of what Knowth is all about, outlining why it is of interest and importance. In part, it is intended as a guide that people can use to navigate their way around the site, but it is also a book that anyone can read, use and enjoy without being on site and still get a feel for Knowth and how it came to be what it is.' https://shop.ria.ie/products/knowth Brú na Bóinne - Newgrange and Knowth National Monuments Service - Archaeology Heritage Ireland Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage

It's summer solstice for those of us in the northern hemisphere. No better way to mark it than by sharing the news of an upcoming The Royal Irish Academy publication on Knowth! All of us in the RIA Publications Office (especially Helena and Fidelma) are very excited - and a bit nervous - for this one to appear. It was wonderful to work once again with the brilliant Kerri Cleary, Elizabeth Twohig, Patrizia La Piscopia, Claire Breen, Edel Bhreathnach and Marie-Luise Theuerkauf, amazing colleagues in National Monuments Service - Archaeology, Brú na Bóinne - Newgrange and Knowth, OPW - Office of Public Works National Museum of Ireland and the inspiring Shadows and Stone - Photography by Ken Williams and illustrator Steve Doogan to bring this guide to Knowth together. In bookshops next month, but see below to pre-order from the RIA webshop.

From the RTÉ Archives - a News report broadcast on 12 June 1973, about work underway and being planned by the OPW at various heritage sites, including at Knowth (see about 1min 20 in). A real blast from the past. So interesting to see it under excavation.

The Office of Public Works has plans to maintain and preserve more heritage sites in Ireland.
