Now while I'm a big fan of customer acquisition, I do think its more important to keep a customer purchasing from you over time.

Why?

Because of the most important metric in your business.... Life time value.

You can acquire customers from paid and free acquistion strategies and generate that initial sale.

BUT!

If you don't have a good customer fulfilment experience, your efforts and sweat equity to get that customer in the first place will be wasted!

To keep your customer satisfied 100%... fulfill on your product or service. Deliver your offer to the best end result possible. Have a seemless customer journey and nurture the relationship over time with over delivering on value & end results.

There is no doubt that upsells and cross sells are important to the growth and sustainability of your brand. You should be offering upsells across your entire website.

I am talking pre-purchase upsells that you display on your product pages, as well as your cart pageโ€ฆ and of course your post-purchase upsells after someone buys.

Focus on your post-purchase upsells in particular, because this is where you make most of your upsell revenue.

Upsells are a super important part of your offers because the better your upsells, the higher your average order value, the more profit you make and the more you can afford to spend to acquire a customer.

But letโ€™s not get ahead of ourselves.

Weโ€™re two weeks away from finishing Q1 and things are looking very profitable on our customer acquisition system for this brand in the UK. Some people say that Q1 can be slow right after the lucrative period of Q4.

The two questions I ask when sales are slow is โ€ฆ

1. โ€œAre you running paid media advertising to showcase your offers?โ€

2. โ€œAre you using your email database of customers to showcase your offers?โ€

Both channels are lucrative when implemented correctly.

There are other advertising angles to use when it comes to UGC. Everyone goes for the obvious testimonial angle.

UGC doesnโ€™t have to be testimonials specifically. You donโ€™t need 5 star emojis to make it sellable.

Hereโ€™s some ideas on what you can use -

1. Videos with VALUE insights. Make the video relatable. Donโ€™t worry about whether it should be 3 seconds or 30 seconds. You can go as long as 3 minutes provided the video is offering valuable insight on how the product delivers desired out comes.

2. Use short case studies for ad copy/creative from your customers about how buying your product has changed their life in a positive way.

3. Use images that are generated through testimonial apps or just photos sent through organically from customers who comment on posts (be sure to ask permission to use them from the customer).

1. Have a system in place where you can gather feedback.

A) Best way is to use a Shopify app that automatically send and collects feedback (eg. Stamped.io)

B) Manually send emails to your customers, make your messaging personal. Use https://lnkd.in/eR2sJ6r7 to do it on scale.

C) Cheapest way is to collect UGC from the comments under your social media post and encourage happy customers to share photos or videos with you.

2. Ask the right questions when asking for feedback:

A) What is the difference before and after theyโ€™ve used the product?

B) What was the reason they were looking for this product?

C) What is the most positive/negative experience theyโ€™ve had with this kind of product?

3. Test a lot of different UGC from your customers to see which hooks and pains points work best for you.

4. Encourage your customers to produce UGC by providing special discounts or gifts award

You should always be incorporating user generated content into your advertising. Let me give you a few pointers as to why.

1. Audiences online have become INCREDIBLY tired of promotions that BOMBARD them from nearly everywhere. BUY NOW, HUGE SALE etc etcโ€ฆ. It doesnโ€™t grab their attention anymore and on top of that, the ad doesnโ€™t make a good job of showcasing what your product can actually do to enhance the customers end goal experience.

UGC when done correctly, can do a great job of acquiring attention, that builds excitement & desire for your products.

2. Professional Ads TRIGGER negativity and a dislike toward your product. The same old wording professional shots bring a sort of disconnect between you and your audience. UGC solves this by allowing your customers to show the desire of your product to your prospects. People like to see people in the same tribe getting value out of similar desires that they want. Thats why UGC works so great in my opinion.

3. Touching on my last point. Who wouldnโ€™t find it attractive when you see a buyer whoโ€™s expressing their love and appreciation for your product. That can only influence you as a prospect to purchase the product.

Hereโ€™s some tips on how to execute on UGC -

- Facebook ads donโ€™t have to be fancy looking. The more organic and less โ€œprofessionalโ€ in their appearance can be a good thing as it shows off authenticity.
- Your ads should be close to storytelling that look raw and natural.
- The testimonials & other UGC angles you implement should not be generic. Make them specific so that people can clearly see the problem that they face as well.

Iโ€™ll give you an example -

We had an ad running for an apparel brand and advertised UGC with a female customer taking pictures in the mirror, at home on her phone. She tells the viewers her story. How buying these leggings made the difference for her. She is not trying to SELL to anyone and thats exactly what makes this piece of content so SELLABLE!

Donโ€™t get me wrongโ€ฆ professional images and video have their place within your advertising sales funnel. I am not excusing them entirely. I am just making you aware that UGC is very effective when you have a good story frame to work with.

So I thought Iโ€™d address it in this video.

Its not an answer we like to give out initially without studying how an ecom brand is performing currently. We always like to get answers to questions over a call with the brand owner/marketing manager to understand metrics such as -

1. Order numbers on the website over a 3 - 6 month period
2. AOV over a 3 - 6 month period
3. Profit margins on best sellers so that we can calculate breakeven ROAS
4. Conversion rate on the website over the last 3 - 6 months

Answers to those questions along with some other insights and how their ad account is performing currently will give us a better understanding of how ROI looks.

Although its important to continually acquiring new customers into your business, its even more important to build bonds with these customers, keep them engaged and continually sell to them so that you can add more value, build out lifetime value and turn as many customers as you can into brand advocates.

The madness is over! For another year at least. All that preparation for what is typically a week of shopping frenzy has now come to a halt. The days and weeks post Black Friday event take their toll on businesses, with many facing challenges as sales take a noticeable drop, until Christmas kicks into gear.

So why is the period after Black Friday slow?
โ€‹
What can we attribute this to exactly?
โ€‹
It's not down to one or two specific reasons. Let's take a look at them below.

1. No Heavy Discounting
โ€‹
Consumers have been fed heavy discounting deals and have been nurtured for a short period of time to shop only when brands launch their exclusive sale. So it's going to be a challenge to have them pay full price immediately after potentially your biggest sale of the year. They are just not in the right "price mindset" post Black Friday.

2. Consumer Fatigue Kicks In

The Black Friday sale period can be quite intense for consumers due to the copious amount of sales, deals, advertising (online/offline). Once the event is over, consumers often exhaust their budgets, which in turn leads to a decrease in purchases. They've also been hammered with advertising and promotions leading up to Black Friday & during the event from every angle possible.

In 2023, we have to consider the cost of living crisis many are experiencing in the world. There is no doubt this is a contributing factor to not only post Black Friday decline in orders, but throughout the year.

Depending on who your target audience is... alot of consumers are experiencing increased financial hardships, such as inflation and energy prices. The less deposable income people have, the less money to spend. Your product will fall into two categories. Essential and non essential. Always take economic factors into consideration at this challenging time,

Here's how to retain your customers post Black Friday & encourage more orders.

1. Offer a Gift For Every Purchase

If your margins allow, it might be an idea to offer a free gift with every purchase as a special offer for customers who have previously purchased with you. Who doesn't love a freebie!
โ€‹
2. Be Good To Your Loyal Audience
โ€‹
For customers that are in your high LTV bracket, let them know that you appreciate them by giving them an exclusive offer. These folks are your core customers and they're clearly interested in what you have to say. They're your brands biggest fans! Look after them, reward them... make them feel special. They will return this appreciation through further purchases.
โ€‹
Your loyal customers (roughly 20%) are going to generate about 80% of your revenue. Keep this in mind and target initiatives such as this at them.
โ€‹
3. Promote Festive Theme Products
โ€‹
Try pushing exclusive products with a festive theme as part of your retention strategy post BFCM. Think limited-time product bundles. This would obviously have greater appeal at this time of year. Not every brand can pull this off due to the nature of their product, but itโ€™s worth considering a brainstorm nonetheless.

4. Reminders About The Christmas Rush

People are very much aware of Christmas being around the corner. However, its always a good thing to remind people about shipping cut off times (so your customers get their items pre Christmas... not post Christmas). Last thing you want to have happen is a bunch of customers returning items simply because little Johnnys Christmas presents arrived after the big day... resulting in huge disappointment & resentment towards your brand.

Email your prospects & customers about limited stock and final chance emails to encourage them to purchase so they don't miss out on some of your popular items.
