Ewan MacColl wrote it about Salford, England — and Irish folk singers later helped turn it into a staple of the Irish folk repertoire.

One of those songs we’ve adopted so completely that it almost feels Irish by birth.

Patrick Kavanagh first wrote the words as a poem, and they were later sung to the traditional Irish air associated with “The Dawning of the Day.”

One of the best-known songs in Irish folk music began with poetry on a page.
