Founded in 2017 the SHOCC Project reimagines historical spaces and crowdsources contemporary sounds. What do Shandon Bells in Cork sound like? What about the Echo Boys on Patrick Street? What did these sound like at earlier points in Cork's history? An interdisciplinary team, the Sonic Histories of Cork City, is investigating what locations and spaces in Cork City might have sounded like in vario
us moments in the city’s past and what the locations and spaces currently sound like in the present. In order to recreate sounds from the past the team will examine maps, photographs, archival footage, travel accounts or diaries and for sounds of current spaces the team will do field recordings and subsequently edit them. The project team will consider if architectural, sociological, environmental, political or other factors influence any possible changes over time and the team will look to Cork’s people to contribute to their city’s sonic history by recording sounds and telling stories of buildings, streets and localities familiar to them. Elaine Harrington (Special Collections Librarian, UCC), John Hough (Senior Technical Officer in Music, UCC) and Dr Jillian Rogers (Assistant Professor of Musicology at Indiana University) comprise the SHOCC Project team.
