Stanford Kitchen Stanford Tourism & Business

One of the earliest images of anyone from the Claremorris area is this portrait of Robert Stanford, dating from the mid-nineteenth century.

Stanford's fascinating life will be the subject of an illustrated presentation by the historian, Dr Ciarán Reilly, in Claremorris Town Hall Studio on Thursday night 17th October at 8.15 pm. The event, entitled ‘An Irishman at the Cape: Robert Stanford of Ballinastanford’, is being hosted by Claremorris Historical Society and admission is free.

Born in the townland of Ballinastanford, near Claremorris, in 1806, Robert Stanford was a career soldier who had served successfully in Burma and in the Frontier Wars in the Eastern Cape in 1835-36. Retiring from the army on half-pay in 1838, Stanford bought the Kleine Valley Estate, amounting to 26,807 acres for ÂŁ3,000. Stanford was easily amongst the most enterprising of the Cape colonists until he became involved in a major stand-off between the colonists and the British government over a proposal that convicts would be sent to the Western Cape. Despite the protests of the colonists and the sympathy of the governor, Sir Harry Smith, Earl Grey pushed ahead with plans to settle convicts at the Cape and duly instructed that the Neptune III was to leave Bermuda with 300 passengers on board. Amongst the prisoners were a number of Young Irelanders who had taken part in the failed uprising the previous year, including the by now infamous John Mitchel. The ensuing crisis was to prove disastrous for Stanford and his family.

Connacht Truck Show - Saturday 3rd June - Claremorris, County Mayo

Designated Charity - Mayo Roscommon Hospice | Health Checks | Vintage Displays | Free to Attend Event

A reminder of the Connacht Truck Show which is taking place this coming Saturday 3rd June at the Claremorris Athletic Track & Showgrounds (June bank holidays weekend). Mayo Roscommon Hospice has been selected as the designated charity for this popular event.

Connacht Truck Show 2023 will have a number of interesting elements, including gleaming Haulage Truck displays and Classic & Vintage Trucks Jamborees, while there will be a number of top prizes on offer for the most impressive exhibits.

The one-day gathering will feature trucks of all ages, shapes and sizes. Not only will it feature vehicles from road transport operators from all around the province, but many exhibitors will be travelling from further afield. That will include a number of hauliers crossing the Irish Sea to come to the ‘Heart of the West’ to exhibit their everyday working trucks. The big prize – ‘Top Truck of the Show’ – selected by show visitors, will once again be dedicated to local truck driving legend, the late Paddy Kelly.

A selection of food trucks, mobile coffee units and ice cream vans will also be on site, in addition to clothing and merchandise stalls, plus vehicle care products.

Two themes will run throughout this one day event: Truck Driver Welfare and Business Networking.

As truck drivers can be susceptible to various health issues because of the nature of their work, there will be a health check clinic hosted in association with the Hospice and the Order of Malta open to show visitors throughout the day, with advice on blood pressure, prostate and skin cancer, diabetes, heart problems etc.

If you wish to book in your truck(s) please contact Mary Morrissey on Mary Morrissey - 087 2178495.

This event is free to attend and is guaranteed to be fun family day out.

Mayo Roscommon Charity Fundraiser on Saturday 3 June, Claremorris

Horse power of a different nature returns to the Claremorris Showgrounds at Claremount, the venue for the annual Agricultural Show for over one hundred years. On Saturday 3 June, the Connacht Truck Show, a fundraising event for the Mayo Roscommon Hospice, will have a large number of gleaming show and working trucks on display among many other attractions, including trade exhibitions, food stands, live music, childrens’ amusements, competitions, prize draws and health clinics - “something for everyone, all for a good cause” according to the show organisers, Fleet Transport magazine.

Showcase trucks such as an American Navistar International Eagle 6x4 with 6-cylinder Detroit Diesel engine and double drive, the local Fire Service Scania, and a classic Airport Fire Tender, plus a whole variety of new and vintage trucks will take up most space around the Athletic Track at the site.

There is a chance to win a brand new Hyundai Kona car in the Hospice Prize Draw, and visitors can win prize packs by nominating their favourite truck of the show, with the proud owner presented with the Paddy Kelly Memorial Cup. The drivers of the display trucks are in contention for brand themed prizes also.

During the free-to-attend event, live music, performed by local band, The Outsiders, will entertain attendees while enjoying some food and refreshments, while children and teenagers can have some great fun in the Water Walking Zorbs (without getting wet!) or by taking a spin on the Pirates Cove Bungee Trampoline.

Truck and Van dealers in the region will be there to demonstrate their latest models, and display new fleet sales, while the indoor exhibition area will facilitate various trade and merchandise stands.

Proceedings will get underway for visitors from 11.30 am, as the trucks will be all parked up in their allotments, from 7.30am to 10am. There is no admission charge, but visitors are welcome to donate to the designated charity at their stand if they wish.

Entry forms for truck displays and trade stands are available online at fleet.ie

“With Claremorris being centrally located in the ‘Heart of the West’, we expect to see a large representation from the road transport sector in and around Connacht and beyond. Our aim is to firmly establish this show as an annual event in the Truck Show calendar, building on the success from 2018 and last year, while supporting a local charity in the process,” explained Jarlath Sweeney, on behalf of the organising committee.

“We are grateful for the support of Joyce Oil/Sweeney Oil, Capital Flow Finance, Robe Training, Western Truck & Trailer and Larkin Transport towards the running costs of the event and to the truck displays and trade stands that have booked in to date. There is plenty of room for more, but once the venue is full, it’s full, so sign up quickly is the advice,” he added.
