Incredibly proud of my late dad Joe and grandad Mick for standing up for themselves and their fellow workers when they formed part of this strike at the Arigna mines in November 1968 demanding fairer conditions including better pay and “just” a five day work week. They eventually won their battle! Dad is pictured in the group of 8 men holding placards and he is third from the right. Arigna abú!

Last week in my capacity of President of Douzelage European Town Twinning, I had the pleasure of attending the 4th Douzelage Young Musicians Festival in our Czech Republic partner town of . There I had the opportunity to make a short speech and be welcomed so warmly by Mayor Petr Mottl and Eva Beníšková and her team who did such a wonderful job of organising the whole event. I was delighted to be able to present some uniquely Donegal gifts to our hosts including a scarf from McNutt of Donegal and a bog oak pen from Donegal Pens.

What an honour it was last week to attend one of President Higgins’ famous garden parties with my RNLI colleagues at Áras An Uachtaráin. The theme of the party was Sustaining and Conserving our Oceans, Seas and Marine Resources - UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 and we were delighted to be amongst the many groups invited to attend on the day.

From being met at the door by the president’s wife Sabina, to having so much freedom to explore the beautiful grounds of Áras An Uachtaráin, ringing the peace bell to getting a photo with President Michael D Higgins himself, it’s a day that none of us will forget in a hurry.

Thanks to the staff at the Áras for their kindness and friendliness and to the RNLI for the opportunity to attend.

A lot of fun with the gang experiencing the annual Pfingstfest in Bad Kötzting, Germany last weekend. As usual I wrote a few words...!

Spreading the word about Douzelage European Town Twinning one step at a time! 🇪🇺

Our president Shane Smyth always likes the opportunity to talk about Douzelage and earlier today he caught up with MEP for Ireland Midlands/Northwest Maria Walsh and Government of Ireland Minister of State for European Affairs Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD to tell them all about our organisation and the great work it does across Europe!

You never know who you’re going to bump into as part of the job. What a pleasure to meet the legendary Timmy Mallett this morning as he continues his biking tour of Donegal! Not a Mallett’s mallet in sight though 🙈

It was a great honour last Friday to be invited to Ards Friary Retreat Centre as they launched their Sanctuary Woodland. I even got to plant a hazel tree - this will mark my Douzelage European Town Twinning presidency which began almost one month ago. Thanks to Brian, Sean and all the team at Ards for a lovely morning.

Some news...

In a few weeks time, I will step down from my role as Bundoran Tourism Officer for a new adventure.

It has been the honour of my life and privilege to have served the town and see such wonderful and positive development since 2013. While sometimes the job had its challenges - the town, its beauty, its character, its facilities and most of all its people really sold itself, with just a little input from me. I did what I do and tried to help to elevate Bundoran position as a tourism destination even higher through the website, social media, PR and a few events here and there.

From fireworks displays in torrential rain to shutting down the Main Street on numerous occasions for family fun days, car parks for vintage car displays to running music festivals, the experience I have gained and the people I have met and worked with will live forever in my memories.

Thank you to the trade members of Discover Bundoran who constantly entertained, supported and championed my oftentimes “left of centre” promotional ideas.

A special word of thanks to John O’Connell for his leadership and guidance during these 11 years and for taking a chance on me with Margaret and Eimear. He often talked me out of stuff but more often I talked him into stuff during many brainstorming sessions. To Cormac Meehan for his counsel, to Mickey Mc for his constant support and encouragement and his team for all of the help over the years, to everyone else - my colleagues at Waterworld, the Tidy Towns team, Danielle, Teresa, Maura, dearest Marc, Bundoran trade and those who I call my colleagues and friends all over town - thank you for everything.

I’m excited for the next challenge and I won’t be far.

Much love

Shane

Today I got to shout at 1662 people as they set off to run 10 miles into a different county (and province!) and back again to Bundoran for the annual Bundoran 10 event of which I am one of the organisers. Well done to everyone who took part on a "challenging" day and hope you all enjoyed the free natural exfoliation at the finish line!

Thanks to Ronan and Eimear at Myrunresults.com for their support!
