A public consultation event on a planned new Community Hub for Monksland will be held on Wednesday, November 29, in the Athlone Springs Hotel.
🗓️ Walk-in sessions are from 7am to 12 noon and again from 4pm to 8pm.
📌 In the early afternoon, clinic sessions are available for community groups, sports or social organisations.

Great comedy line-up in Athlone Little Theatre

Before the Christmas rush, it's time to treat yourself to a great night of laughter, fun and top class drama in Athlone Little Theatre.

The theatre troupe is busily preparing to present three fantastic one-act comedies directed by Hélène Lepaon, Clive Darling and Paddy Martin from Wednesday, November 29 to Wednesday, December 6 next at 8pm. Again as part of this run, there is a Sunday matinee only on December 3 at 3pm.

All three productions are quite different but each will move you and send you home with a big smile on your face!

In 'Dear Diva' by Jan Harris and directed by Hélène Lepaon, middle-aged Frances (Linda Butler), is excitedly awaiting the arrival of legendary mega star of stage and screen Ezzlie Harlow (Michelle Kelly) to her humble home. Both the superfan and the big star are in for shocks, betrayal and a reversal of fortune, as they learn from each other to be careful what you wish for. Ronan McGrane completes the cast as the taxi driver.

In the second production, 'Louie's Daughter' by Frederick Stroppel and directed by Clive Darling, the action centres around a typical corner bar, where regulars A.G. (Martin Kelleher) and Woody (Brian Foy) enjoy the male camaraderie of friendly insults, unsolicited opinions and pointless conversation. But their comfortable everyday routine is disrupted by the unexpected presence of a pretty female bartender Donna, played by Ekiñe Azcárate.

'Melody' by Deirdre Kinahan, directed by Paddy Martin, is a quirky play focusing on the peculiar passions shared by a bachelor Mr Kane (Ronan Flynn) and widow Kathleen (Gráinne Moore). These two lonely souls realise they share many common interests including classical music, ham and cheese sandwiches and much, much more.

The cast on-stage are indebted to the work backstage to bring the productions to fruition, so big thanks go to stage manager Bróna McCormack, alongside her backstage crew of Maresa Kelly, Ronan McGrane and Joanna Grobosz. Paddy Martin is responsible for lighting and sound design, with lighting and sound operation by John Allen and Katie Lynch.

The 2023 Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal aims to deliver as many gift-filled shoeboxes as possible to children, for whom poverty is their every-day reality, and make smiles happen. And, they need your help!
Team Hope is calling on parents, children, teachers, families and communities to build-a-box at home or online to help them reach their goal of 200,000 shoeboxes this year. Every shoebox equals a smile on a child’s face in 12 countries across Africa and Eastern Europe – that’s got to be a target worth achieving!
Last year, shoeboxes donated by people from all over Westmeath went to make children like Ion smile in Transnistria. Five year old Ion lives with his sister, mother and grandmother and was overjoyed at getting his Christmas Shoebox. He especially loved his toy cars. He was so surprised to get not one but five cars. He was so proud and happy to show everyone his shoebox gifts.
It has never been easier to build a shoebox. All you have to do is find an empty shoebox, wrap it in Christmas paper and fill it with gifts for a boy or girl aged between 2 and 14, give online or attach a €5 donation and bring it to a local drop off point before the deadline of Friday November 10th. Or you can build-a-box online by donating at www.teamhope.ie and one of Team Hope’s local partners will build a box on your behalf on-the-ground and make sure it goes where it’s needed most.

When building your shoebox, think about the 4 Ws
WRITE - something to write with. For example, colouring pencils, pens, copy books
WASH - something to wash with. For example, a bar of soap and a face cloth
WEAR - something to wear. For example, a hat & scarf, socks, gloves
WOW - something fun or a novelty. For example, a toy or treat

A special focus for the campaign is the Team Hope Shoebox Week which runs this year from November 4-10.
To get involved you’ll find plenty of inspiration on gifts to include, or not, in your shoebox, how to donate and where to drop off your shoebox at www.teamhope.ie. For teachers, there are lots of class lesson plans and teaching resources available online. If finding an empty shoebox is proving tricky, Team Hope partner and drop off point Dealz will be selling flatpack shoeboxes in packs of three in their stores nationwide.

Athlone Athletics Club will host the inaugural Midlands Half Marathon and 10km races on Sunday, September 24.
The half marathon race will commence at 10am with the 10km starting at 10.30am,
