Kuching is famous for huge roundabouts with incredibly long names and even the occasional roundabout with only two exits!!

We purposely build huge roundabouts at home, just so that we can decorate them.

This is one of them in Petra Jaya.

Indu' Tau Ngar, Indu' Tau Nakar.

Few of our previous posts mentioned that weaving is an important part of the Iban culture and being a skilled weaver raises a women’s rank in their community. The art of weaving the ikat fabrics was, and remains, the foremost ways of women acquiring status. It is a parallel prestige system to the Iban’s male headhunting expedition.

For a weaver to be known as a master dyer, or Indu’ Ngar, Indu’ Takar (women who can treat thread, women who knows how to measure ingredients), is the highest level of attainment. These master chemists are held in such esteem that they are believed to be assisted by the spirits of ancestral weaver and they are the only ones that permitted by these spirits to weave special powerful and dangerous designs.

‘Ngar’ is the process of measuring and mixing the ingredients for the mordant bath to prepare cotton yarn for coloring with natural dyes called engkudu (morinda citrifolia). A highly technical process, ngar is performed according to sets of prescribed rituals and involves the use of powerful charms. As a test of a woman’s bravery in facing the challenges and demands of this highly demanding procedure, it is then described as kayau indu, “women’s warfare”. It is performed through a ritual called the Gawai Ngar, where the ritual mixing of mordants is sponsored by a group of women weavers and is led by the tau’ nakar tau’ ngar. In the sense that it enhances her status, the Gawai Ngar thus functions like the Gawai Burong, except that the indu tau’ nakar is not the sponsor of the ritual, but its chief officiant.

During the Ngar ceremony, weavers seek favours (such as inspiration, creativity and manual dexterity) from spirits such as Meni’, Kumang, and Lulung, important female personages. In a genuine concern to achieve greater skills and virtuosity in their weaving, women implore Lang Sengalang Burong and his entourage together with other beneficent spirits, to provide them with the principal tools used in weaving such as ironwood trough (dulang pengar) and coconut shell (tachu’ penakar). Weavers’ requests are channeled through a sacred song (timang ngar) that is sung by a bard (lemambang).

Often, an ancestral line of weavers and dyers acquired their knowledge of dyes and inherited charms from their families. The status, however, like others in Iban society, was essentially achieved and required the acknowledgement of other women weavers. While many women had a knowledge of mordants, very few were willing to assert this knowledge publicly, and to gain the status of indu tau’ nakar, a woman had to be engaged by others as their leader in the process of mixing and applying mordants.

NEW STORY on CERAVASARAWAK: LIVING IN THE NGAR

The pua kumbu is the ritual cloth of the Iban people. Before a pua kumbu can be created, the threads must be dyed. Before the threads can be dyed, they must be mordanted in the Ngar ritual. NEW REVIEW: LA BOCA RIA
See https://ceravasarawak.com/foodandfun/ for more photos and reviews, added regularly, and to add your own comments.

A new kid on the block, La Boca Ria is tapping into the trend for Mediterranean food around Kuching, arguably kickstarted by Zinc. Open for lunch instead, you can now eat the Med all day round. La Boca Ria does it beautifully. It looks beautiful: the best mix of local design with Spanish flavour as antique Asian carved wood panels and salvaged wrought iron combine with colourful posters of Iberian destinations. It tastes beautiful: a full range of imported meats with a classic potato tortilla for breakfast, a plump pork burger for lunch, moist cakes and pastries with coffee and a silky, cinnamon-scented Crema Catalan for any time of the day. It is a cosy little café for the hipster coffeeshop crowd that punches well above its weight as a full-fledged restaurant. The owner has a Spanish husband, so authenticity is high. But test the Maitre-D’, who has an uncanny ability to remember an order, no matter the months that have passed by. In the end, Spanish culture and Malaysian are pretty similar, despite the distance. Fiestas, family and laid-back fun. La Boca Ria will certainly bring a smile to your lips and your stomach.

NEW REVIEW: ZINC
See https://ceravasarawak.com/foodandfun/ for more photos and reviews, added regularly, and to add your own comments.

Zinc is the mother of all Mediterranean flavours in Sarawak and, just celebrating six years, it is still going strong. An open terrace with a double fronted bar, it is the ideal spot for a soothing glass of wine at sunset. An elegant yet quirky interior of open brickwork and enormous belian beams, it is the ideal spot for a refined dinner a deux. A private room upstairs dominated by the city’s longest dining table, it is the ideal spot for family groups and select parties for friends. Ambience aside, Zinc is a foodies’ paradise. These are people who prioritise quality and you get what you pay for. The bread is baked in house, the perfect accompaniment to lashings of olive oil and an array of sumptuous toppings: plump prawns swimming in garlic, tangy olives, fine cheeses and paper thin meat platters. Even a simple topping of tomato puree does the trick. Rabbit, snails, meaty mains, paella and plenty of pizzas round out the menu. You can even get a decent Negroni to round off your meal. All this ensures a dedicated crowd, looking for a little drop of luxury in laid-back Kuching style. So, sink straight into the Med at Zinc.
