GONZALEZ PUTS TOGETHER A MASTERPIECE AT MOTEGI

As the riders were ready to start the sixteenth race of the season, the rain decided to play a trick on the Moto2 field. As the red flag was waved moments after the start, a new, shorter 12-lap race scheduled, which puts a serious question on tyre choice. Manuel Gonzalez opts for the slick option, which on paper sounded like a risky move, but eventually it paid off. The Spanish rider, who started from fourteenth place on the grid, started his charge to the front with an incredible rhythm, before taking the lead. He crossed the line ahead of everyone, claiming his maiden Moto2 race win. Good job Manu!

After the sighting lap, Albert Arenas chose to make it back to the pit-lane for a last-minute tyre change. He started the encounter with rain tyres from the pit-lane, after all the other riders had already swept past him. The choice did not pay off as the track dried out quickly: Arenas makes up a few positions and finishes the race in 22nd place.

“Today was one of those days where destiny in your hands, and I was able to manage things the best possible way! I pushed as hard as I could as I could see Ogura up ahead but quite far, but that’s when I knew today was going to be ‘that’ day! As soon as I left pit-lane, the track was soaked, but yesterday it did dry out quickly so I knew I could have pushed with slick tyres. I passed other riders on the inside and outside, had a lot of fun, I felt like I was playing a video game. Then during the final laps I was looking at the pit-board and it felt like an eternity. I knew I was going to win but had to stay calm, collected, and avoid mistakes. I did win and it was beautiful. Now we’ll try to do it again!”

22nd - ALBERT ARENAS #75
“Today I made the wrong decision, there’s not much to say. It was raining then it dried out and I had chosen rain tyers. I’m very happy for Manu and for the team, we’re all working very hard to secure some good results. I’m very upset for the choice made: now all we can do is learn from these mistakes and come back stronger.”
