The BIOSKOPFORLEN program curates several films from the Indian Cinema canon that address issues of identity, class, caste, the clash of tradition-modernity, and the genesis of the state that harms human life experience. These issues are composed by directors, who in addition to offering their own aesthetic findings, are also personas with clear alignments. We find Mrinal Sen and Ritwik Ghatak, who were members of left-wing organizations; Mani Kaul, John Abraham, start sculpting their cinematic language from their tutelage under Ghatak. Satyajit Ray in the 50s and Anand Patwardhan in the 90s grappled with censorship, the impact of their criticism on religion. This panorama of film and public issues in India can be drawn into the broader context of the legacy of colonialism, the Cold War, and the rise of the far right in various parts of the world today. Together with Abhishek Nilamber, a cultural worker who studies cinema, art, and the Global South, Forum Lenteng invites you to reflect on the intersection of cinema and the public that is increasingly urgent to talk about.
Abhishek Nilamber (Hyderabad, 1987) is a cultural worker engaged in curation, research and activism, moving between Berlin and Kochi, primarily with SAVVY Contemporary. He is the initiator of United Screens - a project that investigates the challenges and opportunities between South to South cinema and video art circulation.
