Roro Jonggrang is a female figure in folklore who demonstrates a strong feminist spirit in the face of difficult circumstances. Since ancient times, forms of local feminism have often been overlooked, yet local feminists are at the forefront of societal change. They are a living example that change can begin with oneself.
In the folklore of Roro Jonggrang, she faces a bitter reality when her fatherโs kingdom is defeated by Bandung Bondowoso, who then intends to marry her. However, she refuses to marry the man who killed her father. Through this story, she shows that women can be strong and independent in facing adversity. She uses her intelligence and wit to preserve her dignity.
Therefore, in the context of feminism, the philosophy embedded in the story of Roro Jonggrang can be seen as a symbol of womenโs resistance against oppression and violence in a patriarchal society and male-dominated power structures. She proves that women can be agents of change and fight for their own rights.
