Podcast being edited as I write but here is a top 10 list:

2024 sequels ranked in order of unnecessary-ness (from least to most)

10. Dune 2 (first one was really cool, fingers crossed the third one gets made)
9. Alien (number??) Romulus (very necessary, alien is a great series, sequels always welcome)
8. Smile 2 (first one was really good, excited to see how it is different to the original)
7. Mad Max 2: Furiosa (didn't think Mad Max needed a sequel but its a great universe, happy to be back)
6. Inside out 2 (seems odd to have a sequel to an animation from almost 10 years ago but I did like the first one, seems like a cynical money grab from pixar whose last few movies bombed but could still be good).
5. Deadpool 3 (don't really care for this series and they are resurrecting a character but maybe it could work... once...maybe?)
4. Gladiator 2 (totally unnecessary BUT the poster did look cool so not number 1 atm - could be soon though)
3. Bad boys 4 (can Will Smith and Martin Laurence still be 'bad' in their late 50's?)
2. Twisters (any sequel which is the original title with an 's' on the end is bad)
1. Beetlejuice 2 (this reeks of a nostalgia trip i.e. winks to the camera, all things point to heinous)

What do YOU think?

WSIIA Summer Series episode 2: US Marshalls

Forget everything you know about fugitive movies because Sam Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones) is back in the action packed sequel to the Fugitive in US Marshalls. Jasper and I explore why this movie was made, why Tommy Lee Jones agreed to wear a chicken suit among other interesting outfits, and talk about our love of watching Sam Gerard order people around, create perimeters and tell his co-workers that he is tired.

Retrospective 4:

In our fourth retrospective we look at Shawshank 2: Shawshanks Revenge ("por qué no los dos?"). The saucy, spicy salsa dancing hit of the summer.

Director L-I-AM brings us back into the world of everyone's favourite wrongfully accused murderer of the 90's Andy Dufresne. In this sequel we rejoin Red as he and Andy reunite. However, in a twist of fate Andy, in Red's absence, has become a drug runner known as El Hefe. While Red is initially aghast as Andy's turn of character, he is quickly distracted by Andy's new partner 'Sexy mama' (played by Selma Hayek). Red begrudgingly accepts being Andy's partner in crime so he can be close to Sexy mama.

Meanwhile the Prison Guard from the first film is drowning his sorrows as he remembers the prisoner that got away. After meeting Andy's goofy sidekick Corey (played by the Rock) who let's slip Andy's whereabouts in a bar dance contest the scent of the chase returns for the Prison Guard. Can he capture the do-gooder turned Drug smuggler Andy Dufresne? Will Red win the heart of Sexy mama? Can Corey control his hunger for Taco's long enough to save his boss from the Policia?

Shawshank 2 became an out and out hit over the summer. With its drug fuelled chaos, action packed dance-offs and unforgettable o**y scene the 18+ crowd flocked to the movies. Some have called it the "movie that saved cinema" (James Cameron - director of Avatar). A box office smash with a $378 million return for L-I-AM means he could be joining Leo DiCap on one of his yachts.

"I just loved it...captures the spirit of the original while also bringing something fresh" - Margaret Pomeranz

SEQUEL NEWS: Gladiator 2

Finally. We at Whose Sequel applaud the movie gods for granting our wish of a sequel to Gladiator. (SPOILER ALERT) The two main characters die, maximus is reunited with his wife and child in a neat ending, the enemy is vanquished... many may think there is no need for a sequel. We were not those people. Was Maximus actually dead? Does he have a long lost brother that wants revenge? Was he resurrected? Was his wife actually still alive the whole time? Is she a zombie? What happened to 'the dream of rome'???? All of this left unanswered.

Perhaps the movie takes place in the present day with maximus's great great great great.....grandson Jake (nicknamed 'gladiator') working his way through the MMA ranks... or on wall street. We can't wait to find out!

It is one of the great action movies and now blockbuster director Ridley Scott is returning to Roman epic Gladiator with a sequel.

Retrospective 3:

Shutter Island: Welcome 2 the Island

The people asked and Vincent Arnold delivered. A sequel to Shutter Island, the 2010 mystery thriller was finally made.

In this direct sequel to Shutter Island 10 years have passed since the events of the first film. We find Teddy, played by the man himself Leonardo Dicaprio, partying with young women on a new tropical island. Teddy is having fun, dancing away from his past into a bright, cocktail fuelled future. However, his father, played by Harrison Ford, has other plans: either Teddy escapes this island life to work for his father's biscuit factory or he loses his inheritance. Teddy contemplates his future: a financially rich life with his evil father (who is also in a toxic relationship with a butler played by Kevin James) or a pennyless life on the tropical island. This is happening all the while young women around him continue to disappear. Is Teddy's grip on reality loosening again? Will he have the power (and dance moves!) to stand up to his father? Will he find out the cause of the island women's disappearance??

The audience found out, and they loved it. A box office hit, raking in a cool 200 mil at the international box office, 10X its original budget. The overwhelmingly white crowd loved the appearance of Mr MAGA himself Donald Trump in a comic cameo (and naked!) turn, and couldn't look past art imitating life as Teddy and Leo faced similar issues in their pursuit of younger women.

Gen Z didn't like the film and gave negative reviews on TicTok

Funny story but good friend Jim Cameron actually pitched Avatar 2 to us here at Whose Sequel. His idea was rejected based on having too few additional sequels planned and not being willing to incorporate 4D (smell, doesnt everyone want to know what Pandora smells like??) into the movie.

Anyway here is aspiring writer, actor and fashion icon Jasper with me at Avatar 2.

General thoughts: needs more blue guys comic relief (maybe jack black in the third one?) But a solid rollercoaster sequel.

Retrospective 2:

Disturbing BehaviourS: The Blue Ribbons are back

- Le Film de Jasper

Get ready for more disturbing behaviour. The two survivors of the first film Steve (played by Jasper Grover replacing James Marsden) and Rachel (still played by Katie Holmes) have moved to a new town to escape their past. They’ve raised two beautiful but dull children in a new town, and are ready to move on with their life. But just as the good life is taking shape, their children report more disturbing behaviour at their school. The bodies pile up, and so do the s*x scenes as we get numerous insights into the healthy marriage of Steve and Rachel. The key suspects grow: is it the children's math teacher Pete (played by disgraced actor Aziz Ansari) or is the mysterious English teacher Gavin (played by star of the first film Nick Stahl) behind it all? Watch out for a fiery climax that will take you back to where all began in a way that is both steamy and shocking.

Budget: $20 million

Box office: The film has only found distribution in Mongolia at this point in time so we aren't sure.

Reviews:

*A bootleg copy found its way to several reviewers outside of central Asia

David Stratton "A striking piece of erotic horror..."

Descendant of Genghis Kahn "this film has brought happiness to my people"

Hi all, in our first piece of news in a while we are going to be taking a look back at some of the movies that have gone from our podcast onto the big screen.

We are going to share a bit about the movie, the actors involved, and some of the critical and public reception to the film.

The first in this series is Donny Dance-OH! This film, initially rejected for funding by Number Two Studios earlier this year, was able to find funding from a few artistically minded Qatari billionaires. The Billionaires, initially unaware of Australia's existence, let alone the aspiring writer Vincent Arnold, watched the recent Socceroos performance with shock and admiration. Seeing the need for immediate investment in something Australian they saw that Graham Arnold's nephew, Vincent Arnold needed help with his movie. The film was shot over a week with a typically generous Qatari budget of 150 Million US dollars.

The movie sees us re-join Donny after he narrowly escapes the plane crash that many assumed killed him in the first film. The rabbit, this time played by Sean Penn, continues to haunt him, often by making him dance at inappropriate times. Donny looks for love, first with his teacher played by Drew Barrymore, then with Jenny (played by Jenny Morrison, Scott Morrison's partner), a ballerina from the wrong side of the tracks. Donny must find the source of his visions, but will he do so in time before the rabbit makes him dance his way to his death? Will Jenny give up her place at Scomo's side? The film is part musical, part dance-ical, part psychological horror, and all heart as we delve deeper into Donny's darkness.

Unfortunately, like the Qatar World Cup the film was beset by production problems, horrific working conditions, and was a box office failure, bringing in a modest 75 million dollars.

"Odd... 4 stars" - David Stratton

"How good is this film?!?" Scomo

"I liked it" - Joe Rogan

The studio had their say, now you have yours! Would you prefer to see a s*x crazed, drug cartel managing Andy Dufresne in Shawshank 2? Or did the mystery of the cheese fondue get you excited? Not to mention Nicole Kidman in the part she was born to play: a rapper.
