THE FORGOTTEN CEMETERIES OF ZAGREB A Popular Science Guide, Petra Rajić Škanjić, Ana Perinić Lewis, Boris Mašić
This book serves as a guide to the locations where the inhabitants of present-day Zagreb where laid to rest throughout its history. While cemeteries were discovered throughout the extended city region, this review will focus solely on the current city centre. The former medieval settlements in this area evolved into a modern Central European city in 1850 after receiving the Imperial Patent from Francis Joseph I. Most of this area is part of the City of Zagreb s historical urban core, which has been designated as a protected cultural property by the Republic of Croatia. The city s central district attracts not only tourists, who come to explore Zagreb s history through various landmarks, but also locals, who play a vital role in the daily life of the community.
Cemeteries may not be a typical topic for guidebooks but their ubiquitous presence in towns and cities serves to showcase the cultural and religious identity of these communities. While primarily perceived as sites of emotional significance, they also bear witness to the past and evolution of a place. The experience of death is a universal aspect of human existence that can be traced back to prehistoric communities. The differences in attitudes towards death and the ways in wich communities from prehistoric, historical, and modern societies deal with it are the result of changes in cultural and social views of death over specific periods.
