Webinar at 17.30h on Contested Histories and Memorialization

[WEBINAR: POLITICAL MYTHS, MEMORY, AND RECONCILIATION]

The New York University (NYU) Program in International Relations and the Center for History, Democracy, and Reconciliation (CHDR) will host a two-day, four-panel Webinar Series on post-conflict societies and their turbulent process of developing shared history and fostering reconciliation between previously warring groups.

NYU and the CHDR will host European and US academics, journalists, politicians, NGO leaders, entrepreneurs, and independent activists who specialize in transitional justice, political mythology, nationalism, local development, and peacebuilding. The Webinar series will focus on the case of Serb-Croat relations. They will also draw comparisons with other post-conflict societies and with the contentious politics of collective memory within the United States concerning monuments and symbolism in the shared public space.

This panel examines the experiences and strategies of transitional justice after the wars of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia. Particular attention will be paid to state policies in Croatia and Serbia and their impact on reconciliation. We will also examine the specific experiences of the NGO sector through the work of Documenta.

This panel compares contested memory-scape and monumental heritage in the former Yugoslavia and US, with a focus on how to deal with controversial memorials and symbols in public space. The participants will reflect upon strategies of how to use this cultural heritage as a catalyst for reconciliation, economic revitalization, and cultural tourism.
