The Ancient Story of Diwali, the Festival of Lights

More than a billion Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists around the world are celebrating Diwali, the festival of lights.
Diwali, also called Deepavali, is one of the biggest festivals in India.

It’s also widely celebrated in Nepal, Malaysia, Fiji and other countries with large South Asian diasporas. Homes, businesses and public spaces are lit up with diyas, or oil lamps made from clay, and fireworks displays abound. People gather with their families, eat sweets and exchange gifts.

Despite its deep religious significance, Diwali today is also a cultural festival observed by people regardless of faith.

The Terminator Predicted our Fears and The Dark Side of AI, 40 years ago.

Many AI researchers resent the Terminator obsession altogether for exaggerating the existential risk of AI at the expense of more immediate dangers such as mass unemployment, disinformation and autonomous weapons.

"First, it makes us worry about things that we probably don't need to fret about," writes Michael Woolridge. "But secondly, it draws attention away from those issues raised by AI that we should be concerned about."

The philosopher Nick Bostrom, whose 2014 book Superintelligence popularised the existential risk of "unaligned AI" (AI that is not aligned with human values and wellbeing).

There are more recent, and more plausible, influential films about AI, including Ex Machina and Her, but when it comes to the dangers of the technology, The Terminator reigns supreme 40 years after its release.

The Terminator, then, is a thriller, a love story, a time-hopping rumination on free will and a satire about our dependence on technology. It is anti-corporate, anti-war, anti-gun and largely anti-machine.

The Terminator would become one of the most profitable films of all time, grossing $78.4m. His lead actor Schwarzenegger, a former bodybuilder of unproven talent, did not have high hopes.

In the 1920s, it stood to reason that machine intelligence would walk and talk, like Frankenstein's monster.

The popularity of lethal robots led the science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov, in 1942, to draw up the "three laws of robotics": the first ever attempt to define ethical AI.

In the real world, the field of artificial intelligence officially began in 1956 at a summer school at Dartmouth University, organised by computer scientists John McCarthy (who coined the term) and Marvin Minsky. Their ambition was to design machines that could think like humans, but this proved much harder than they had imagined.

The history of AI is one of boom and bust: a cycle of so-called "AI springs" and "AI winters". Mindboggling promises attract attention, funding and talent; their failure to materialise causes all three to slump.

How hurricane conspiracy theories took over social media

A deluge of misinformation online about back-to-back hurricanes in the US has been fuelled by a social media universe that rewards engagement over truth.

Viral posts have ranged from seemingly innocuous questions about the legitimacy of forecasts and rescue efforts, to false claims - repeated by Donald Trump - that hurricane relief funds are being spent on migrants who entered the US illegally.

Others spread false images of the wreckage - faked pictures of children fleeing devastation that were generated by artificial intelligence (AI), old clips showing different storms or computer-generated (CGI) videos. And then there were those who shared false and evidence-free conspiracy theories about the government manipulating - or “geo-engineering”- the weather.

“Yes they can control the weather,” wrote Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene last week on X.

She tells me how “a well informed collective is much harder to control”. In other words, the more people who believe these kinds of evidence-free conspiracy theories, the harder it is to combat them.

This ultimately comes down to the way the algorithms across social media sites favour engagement above all else. These conspiracy theories, false claims and hate can reach hundreds of thousands of people before anyone realises they’re are untrue - and those sharing them can be rewarded with views, likes, followers or money in return.

The Symbolic Meaning and Legend Behind the Chung Yeung Double Ninth Festival 重阳节

It's a public holiday in Hong Kong.

Traditionally, this is the day people in Hong Kong gather to hike and visit family graves to pay their respects. These recreational activities go back to the Eastern Han period, around 2,000 years ago.

How is the Chung Yeung Festival different from the Ching Ming Festival?

​While people do many of the same activities on Chung Yeung that they do on Ching Ming, the origins behind the celebrations are different.

Ching Ming, referring to ‘light’ or ‘brightness’, usually takes place before the spring ploughing, to pray for prosperity and blessings from the gods. Families will sweep the tombs of their ancestors and burn joss sticks or joss paper. The day is very much centred around ancestor worship and remembering the lives of people who have passed away.

Chung Yeung, however, is the autumn festival that marks the end of the growing season. Ancient people would hold ceremonies around this time to express their gratitude to the gods for the blessings of the past year. While it started as a day to drive away danger, over the years it has become more of a celebration.

“In Chinese belief, the Yin and Yang cannot exist without each other. So, doubling nine is seen as an overabundance of Yang energy, making the day potentially dangerous,” he said.

In 1989, the Chinese government designated the festival as Senior’s Day – a day to express love and show respect to the elderly.

Ex-minister found guilty in case that gripped Singapore

Charge sheets revealed that he was gifted more than S$403,000 ($311,882; £234,586) worth of flights, hotel stays, musicals and grand prix tickets.

Property tycoon Ong Beng Seng was named in the charges, often as the party offering the alleged bribes.

Mr Ong owns the rights to the Singapore Grand Prix, while Iswaran was advisor to the race’s steering committee.

Mr Ong’s company Hotel Properties also has 38 hotels and resorts operating under brands including Four Seasons, Hard Rock Hotels and Concorde, according to the London Stock Exchange's Refinitiv Eikon.

While in government, Iswaran held multiple portfolios in the prime minister's office: in home affairs, communications and, most recently, the transport ministry.

But it was during his long stint in the trade and industry ministry that he gained prominence, playing a role in developing Singapore's tourism landscape in the late 2000s and 2010s.

This was a time when the government poured in vast resources and courted billions in foreign investment to build casinos, hotels, tourist attractions and events like the F1 Grand Prix.

Singapore's lawmakers are among the highest-paid in the world, with some ministers earning more than S$1 million ($758,000). Leaders justify the handsome salaries by saying it combats corruption.

Prior to last year, the most recent case of a politician facing a major corruption probe was in 1986, when national development minister Teh Cheang Wan was investigated for accepting bribes. He took his own life before he was charged.

Before that, former minister of state for environment Wee Toon Boon was sentenced to 18 months jail in 1975 for a case involving more than $800,000.

“I remember very specifically as a teenager, he would chase me down at church, me and other friends my age, and really pin us in a corner and massage our arms and shoulders and say, ‘Hey, you need to come see me,’” Snow says. “I would often try to leave early just to go hide in the car.”

Every Sunday, she saw him at their Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the center of town where Dr. David Farley was a long-standing and respected member of the congregation.

After watching a documentary about the gymnasts abused by then-team doctor Larry Nassar, Medley, Pratt and Snow launched a civil suit against Farley. “Their experience made me feel like if I had backing, I could fight this, we could fight it,” says Snow. “Karoshi,” or “death by overwork.” Workers in Japan can’t quit their jobs. They hire resignation experts to help

Shiori Kawamata, operations manager of Momuri, said that in the past year alone they received up to 11,000 enquiries from clients.

Located in Minato, one of Tokyo’s busiest business districts, the firm launched in 2022 with a name that seeks to resonate with their helpless clientele – “Momuri” means “I can’t do this anymore” in Japanese.

At a cost of 22,000 yen (about $150) – or 12,000 yen for those who work part time – it pledges to help employees tender their resignations, negotiate with their companies and provide recommendations for lawyers if legal disputes arise.

“Some people come to us after having their resignation letter ripped three times and employers not letting them quit even when they kneel down to the ground to bow,” she said, in another illustration of the deferential workplace culture embedded in Japan.

More than 370 companies have been blacklisted by labor bureaus across the country since the list was published in 2017.

The stress has proven fatal for decades, as exemplified by a phenomenon called “karoshi,” or “death by overwork.”

According to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, 54 people died from work-induced brain and heart conditions and were granted compensation in 2022, which is actually a major decline from the 160 recorded two decades ago.

But the number of people filing claims over mental stress at work is on the rise, shooting up to 2,683 from 341 over the same period of time.

“When one party is unhappy, you could end up in a divorce. But like a divorce, nobody is 100% faultless, right?” Ono, from Hitotsubashi University, said.

As the country grapples with a labor shortage fueled by a rapidly aging population and declining birth rates, young people now have more say in the market than their predecessors.

“I think that younger people these days are more non-confrontational,” the expert said, noting that many have been deprived of social interactions at work due to Covid. As a result, young workers prefer to quit without having direct contact with their bosses.

But Ono suggested that it’s always good to have a discussion and not to burn bridges with employers, so he would recommend against accessing such services.
