Are you into ants? If the answer is yes, you’ll want to scurry over to the Tung Chung Community Liason Centre on January 11 to hear HKU Professor Benoit Guénard give a talk: Discovering Ants on Lantau Island. Entrance is free.

The talk is part of one of the many projects sponsored by the Lantau Conservation Fund, a HK$1 billion government programme dedicated to protecting the island’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

In addition to his scientific research, Professor Guénard is the director of the Hong Kong Biodiversity Museum. As the city’s first museum solely dedicated to biological diversity, the HKBM acts as a vital scientific hub under HKU. Although it is a self-funded academic entity, it works hand-in-hand with non-profits to make environmental science accessible to everyone and offers a collection of nearly 60,000 specimens of plants and animals.

This evening is the 12th night after Christmas – time to take down the holiday decorations. The good news? There are not one but two ways to recycle ‘real’ Christmas trees in DB. You can take them to the Green@Islands recycling spot, which is open every Tuesday from 10am to 1pm, and 2.30pm to 5.30pm at Green Icon, or you can schedule a home pick-up by calling Winson Cleaning Services at 3176 3188 (a service fee applies).

In both cases, the collected trees are further handled by the EPD and are either converted into compost or upcycled at Y·PARK, the government-operated yard waste recycling centre in Tuen Mun.
