Sports

I'd like to introduce some sports which you might not see often in textbooks.

Lacrosse (LA-CROSS) - a sport which you pass the ball around your teammates using a net-like stick.

Aerial Hoop (AIR-REAL HOOP) - sometimes refer to as lyra, dancer performs acrobatics (tricks) on a hula hoop suspended from the ceiling.

Curling (CUR-LING) - involves a player sliding a stone on a sheet of ice towards a target area.

Frisbee (FRIS-BEE) - we are relatively more familiar with this sport as it doesn't require much special equipment apart from the frisbee itself.

How many of these have you played before?

Theme - Hi!

Want to sound more native? Running out of ways to say hi? Well, here are 5 common ways to greet somebody other than 'Hi!'

Westerners love small talks. When they greet, they'll ask how each other are doing - the 'how are you? ' part. They would also give a nice big hug too, especially if they've not seen the person for a long time.

Other ways of asking include 'How's it going? ', 'How's everything?' or 'How have you been lately?'

So what's your answer to that?

Personal Update

This was my friend's bachelorette party on Saturday.

In British English, it is often referred as a 'hen do'. It is a tradition where the bridesmaids or other friends host a party for the bride-to-be and celebrate for the upcoming wedding. It often includes games, drinks [飲酒] , dinner and loads of photos.

We went for a baking session [焗蛋糕] this time round.

The equivalent party for the groom is called a bachelor party (US) or a stag do (UK).

Happy Wedding my dearest friend

Friday - Birish Slang

Cuppa originates from the phrase "cup of".

Why? Because 'of' is a soft linking word in the phrase 'cup of...' You'll either pronounce it as 'uf' or sometimes just an 'uh' sound - cup-uh... cuppa!

When the Brits say a cuppa, they mean a cup of tea, because BRITISH LOVES TEA (it's a classic stereotype.) Therefore, they will omit the word 'tea' there. It is only if they are looking to have a drink other than tea, then they'll specify it.

E.g. I'd like a cuppa coffee.

Thu - Famous Structure

This is the Pearl Tower (in short) in Shanghai. I paid a visit last year when was attending my friends' wedding at Shanghai.

It is a TV broadcasting tower located in the Pudong New Area by the side of Huangpu River opposite The Bund.

I think you can tell why it was named the way it is, right?

Rebound就是 反彈的意思。
Re is a prefix (詞頭), means again (重覆). E.g. re-do (重做) , refund (退款) , revision (復習)

If used as a noun, the stress should place on 're' - like the sound 'flee' but with an 'r'.

In some sport games (e.g. Basketball), a rebound (籃板球) 'is a statistic awarded to a player who retrieves the ball after a missed field goal or free throw.'

Tue - Food Vocabulary

Pretzels orignated in Germany which is a type of baked pastry made from dough that is commonly shaped into a knot (結). The texture is a little similar to bread but a little crustier (更脆). It is typically seasoned with salt, but nowadays I see them half-coated in cheese, sugar, chocolate and cinnamon (肉桂) too.

The pretzel I first knew was a small biscuit-like snack. I never thought of it being the size of the picture above, nor would I have thought the traditional pretzel was more of a bread than a biscuit.

Pronunciation:
Pretzels (PRET-ZILS)
Knot (NOT)

Mon - phrasal verb

I wouldn't consider this as a difficult phrasal verb to understand, but it is definitely not used or heard enough here in HK.

I think I heard this phrasal verb most on youtube cooking channels where they say "now bring it down to a simmer (from boiling)" means to reduce the temperature of the boiling (沸騰) liquid. 直譯就是把液體從沸騰降至微沸, 但同常中文會說把大火較至小火。

Pronunciation
Hideous (奇醜) HID-DI-US
Expectations (期望) X-PEC-TAY-SHUNS

Friday - Slang (British)

We are all very familiar with this word in toasts (祝酒). However, if you ever hear a person replacing the word 'thanks' with 'cheers', you know the person is from the UK.

Back then when I was still settling in London, it was so commonly heard that I almost felt weird for being one of the very fews to say 'thank you' to others.

Actually now that I think about it, 'cheers' can even mean 'bye' sometimes. It is often used together with 'mate'. 'Cheers mate' means 'thanks, my friend'. A British person can easily speak to a stranger (e.g. the waiter at a bar) and call him a 'mate' because our British fella likes to sound friendly. In most cases, 'mate' is used on men rather than women.

Do you know how a vaccine (疫苗) work? It is actually weakened or killed forms of the disease-causing microbe being injected (注射) into the body in order to produce immunity (免疫力).

So the coronavirus vaccines are in the testing stage and it's exciting to see signs of immune response.

Tues - Food Vocab

Australia is known for their seafood (obviously because they are surrounded by the sea) - this was a plate of oysters my friends and I ordered back then when we were in Melbourne.

Oysters can be eaten raw, and are usually served with lemon juice and vinegar to get rid of the fishy flavour.

Did you know the Oyster is also a smart card they use in London for travelling? It is equilvalent to our Octopus card but ours has definitely expanded to many uses other than just on transportations.

What other seafood do you like?

Pronunciation: OY-STER (yup, literally)
