Today, sorting out archive and reference materials for donation to the Graphic Archive of Hong Kong Design Institute - a full cabinet of overseas children publishers’ catalogues, a small collection of picture books from various countries, a couple of Bologna Annuals on illustration of children books, plus a few HK Illustration annual award year books… we spotted works of Maxim Lo, one of our picture book illustrators, as well as her video interview in a HK periodical 讀書好 on books.

Love Maxim’s lively, child-play illustration collage works! It was 2009, we invited her to illustrate one of our picture books ‘Oliver The Quiet Firefighter’ (2010) written by Sophia Paine, a French mother married to a British with two children, now grown-up university students. Back then, Sophia lived in Hong Kong and had published with us two picture books - Are you My Mummy? Es-tu Mon Papa (2006) and Sweet Words (2010). We thought a stronger color rendition and composition would fit well with story of Oliver the Firefighter. Maxim made it ! The following year after published, we sent this picture book to Jugendbibliothek’s (www.ijb.de) The White Ravens program in Germany. This book had been listed in ‘The White Ravens 2011’ as one of the annual outstanding international books for children and young adults.

Every year, this International Youth Library organises The White Ravens with a team of children literature experts who select over 200 picture books of different languages from all over the world. The selection will be toured in selected countries.

Yes, all our picture and illustrated books are in their library collection.

Organising archive is quite a process of ‘down the memory lane’.

SONIA WONG is an interdisciplinary artist, writer, and researcher based in Hong Kong. Her work explores sexuality, identity, intimacy, and violence, within the context of Asian histories and colonial legacies. Sonia works primarily with text, presented through publications, installations, and live performances. Given the artist’s extensive involvement and exposure in different fields, her texts are border-crossing, often intertwining the personal and the political, the emotional and the intellectual. Her voice is one that is highly intimate and distinctively feminine, as she consciously draws from her lived experiences and personal texts.
