E-Nugget for Today

Verse of the Day:
“There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the LORD came to him: ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ ” (1 Kings 19:9)

Have you had those days or seasons when you had a lot of momentum in life, like during festive days or when you worked on something significant and completed it and then you suddenly felt drained or depleted?

Here, similarly, we see Elijah going into a cave, after he has experienced a miraculous victory in defeating the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel.

Now, Jezebel’s threat on his life is something he can’t take any more and he caves into his feelings of fatigue, fear and self-pity.

An angel wakes him up and gives him some bread and water that strengthens him for the long journey ahead. During these times we too may need to take care of ourselves physically and get some rest if we can and also let the Word of God minister to our hearts.

Once the Lord had taken care of Elijah’s immediate needs and given him some time to be refreshed in body, He asks him this pointed question, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Elijah has lost his sense of purpose in life and forgotten his destiny and calling as a prophet. The Lord repeats this question till Elijah sees that he is running away from his God-given role in life.

If you and I are also beginning to forget or waver about God’s calling and His purposes for our life, the Lord reminds us to refocus on Him.

If you are drifting in a different direction to your destiny in life or if you aren't where you should be or if you feel lost or directionless, God asks you gently, “What are you doing here, …………....?"

Dear friend, shall we, like Elijah, respond to God's still small voice and surrender ourselves to Him, as He refreshes us, to fulfill His plans and purposes for our life?

The Lord knows all our needs and provides!

E-Nugget for Today

Verse of the Day:
“But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap”. (Luke 21:34)

Are you someone who “wears your heart on your sleeve,” a striking image of someone who shows their true emotions to others or are you more reserved? Either way, the heart is supposed to reveal who we are inwardly!

In this verse, Jesus warns the disciples and His hearers to guard their hearts so that they will not be overtaken by the pleasures of the world and be intoxicated by the ways of the world. Jesus also warns that the cares of the world and our preoccupation with our daily lives will make us take our eyes off God and finally be unaware when the Day of the Lord approaches.

Most of us are not into drunken parties or the vices of the world, though it may be a temptation for some, but the worries and the anxieties about our daily lives may distract us and stop us from paying attention to the things of God.

During the recent long drawn season of Covid 19, the Lord got our attention and the world’s attention as our usual routines and lifestyles tended to be disrupted.

Friends, we don’t know exactly when the Lord will return, but throughout Jesus’ teaching, we are called to be prepared for His return like the wise virgins at any time or our return to Him!

Jesus also prepares a place for us the way parents prepare a place for their newborn! No eye has seen and no ear has heard what the Lord has prepared for us as His children!

As we wait on the Lord and are watchful and wise, "He will perfect that which concerns us (Ps.138:8a)", as He has promised!
