Press Release from CPL

The Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) finals will be hosted in Guyana in 2025 and Barbados in 2026.

CPL has agreed to a one-year deal for the finals to be held in Guyana in 2025. For 2026 the finals will be held at the iconic Kensington Oval in Barbados for the very first time.

His Excellency Mohammed Irfan Ali, President of Guyana, said: “I want to take this opportunity to wish Guyana Amazon Warriors all success on behalf of all Guyanese as we try to make it two in a row. To all the other teams we wish you well as we play together in unity. I am also very delighted to announce that Guyana will be hosting CPL 2025 finals.”

The Honourable Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, said: “I am so happy to say that the CPL finals 2026 will be in Bridgetown at Kensington Oval. As you prepare for the long march to Bridgetown let’s hope my own team, Barbados Royals, can take it to the finals this year. If we don’t we will catch you next year, and for sure we are going to catch you in Bridgetown in 2026.”

Pete Russell, CPL’s CEO, said: “Guyana and Barbados have been amazing partners for CPL over the last 12 years and it is really exciting to be able to announce that they will be hosts for the finals in 2025 and 2026 respectively. We would like to thank the governments of both Guyana and Barbados who have agreed to play host to the conclusion of CPL.”

Andre Russell, Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer and Akeal Hosein have all opted out of West Indies’ T20I squad for their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka for personal reasons.

Opening batter Evin Lewis, who had last played a T20I during the World Cup in 2022, returned to the side for the three T20Is in Dumbulla. Lewis was also picked for the ODI leg of the Sri Lanka tour.

Brandon King also returned to the T20I side after having recovered from the side injury that had forced him to miss chunks of the T20 World Cup earlier this early and CPL 2024.

In the absence of Russell, West Indies called up his Trinbago Knight Riders team-mate Terrance Hinds and Antigua and Barbuda Falcons’ Shamar Springer.

This was the first international call-up for both all-rounders, who were impressive in CPL 2024.

While Hinds often fronted up to bowl at the death for TKR, Springer emerged as Falcons’ leading wicket-taker in a spin-dominated CPL with 12 strikes in nine games at an economy rate of 9.39.

Springer has quite a few slower variations in his repertoire, which could suit the potentially sluggish pitches in Sri Lanka.

Rovman Powell will continue to lead the T20I side with Roston Chase, who earned a West Indies central contract earlier this week, retained as his deputy.

Lewis’ return comes after the selection system was revamped with coach Daren Sammy now leading the panel.

“The tour of Sri Lanka gives us a chance to test our depth and assess players in different situations, especially with several senior players missing out for various reasons, including a need for rest and rehabilitation from injury,” Sammy said in a CWI statement.

“We are confident in the squad’s ability to compete strongly against Sri Lanka.”

Johnson Charles, who had reinvented himself as a 360-degree batter in St Lucia Kings’ run to the CPL 2024 final, missed the cut, with Andre Fletcher being picked as the reserve opener behind Lewis and King.

Alick Athanaze is also another top-order option for West Indies. Finisher Sherfane Rutherford, though, is set to return to action after having withdrawn from CPL 2024 for personal reasons.

Left-arm finger-spinner Gudakesh Motie is the only frontline spin bowler in the T20I squad.

He will be assisted by offspin-bowling all-rounder Chase and left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder Fabian Allen, who had won the LPL earlier this year with Jaffna Kings.

Alzarri Joseph, who had been rested for West Indies’ most recent T20I series, against South Africa at home, returned to the side but there was no place for left-arm seamer Obed McCoy, who often operates at the death.

West Indies T20I squad: Rovman Powell (capt), Roston Chase (vice-capt), Fabian Allen, Alick Athanaze, Andre Fletcher, Terrance Hinds, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Shamar Springer

Jewel Andrew bolts into WI ODI squad

Seventeen-year-old Jewel Andrew has broken into West Indies’ ODI squad for the three-match series in Pallekele.

He could become the youngest West Indian to make his debut in ODI cricket; only Derek Sealy and Garry Sobers have made their international debuts for West Indies at the age of 17.

Andrew has played only three List A games and seven CPL matches so far, but has already done enough to catch the attention of some West Indies greats, including Viv Richards and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, his CPL coach at Falcons, and Ian Bishop.

The youngest player to ever feature in the CPL, Andrew marked his debut with an unbeaten 50 against a St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots attack that included internationals like Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi.

Andrew had been earmarked to become a future West Indies star right from his age-group days.

“As we continue to build our ODI team, this tour offers a valuable opportunity to evaluate strategies and give opportunities to emerging talent,” Sammy said.

“We are excited to see young players like Jewel Andrew, who has earned his place as an exciting prospect for the future.”

Shai Hope, who won a two-year contract with CWI, will continue to captain the ODI team with Alzarri Joseph his deputy.

Matthew Forde, who didn’t find a place in the T20I side, made it to the ODI side. He has had some success with Dambulla Aura in the LPL.

The ODI squad has two specialist spinners, with wrist-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr. retaining his place to complement left-arm finger-spinner Motie.

Batters Athanaze and Keacy Carty, who were also part of West Indies’ most recent ODI squad, for the Australia tour earlier this year, retained their spots.

Carty was also in good form for TKR in the CPL, where he scored 246 runs in 10 innings at an average of 30.75 and strike rate of 125.51.

West Indies’ white-ball tour of Sri Lanka will begin on October 13 and will run until October 26.

West Indies ODI squad: Shai Hope (capt), Alzarri Joseph (vice-capt), Jewel Andrew, Alick Athanaze, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd, Hayden Walsh Jr. (ESPNcricinfo)

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo made it clear that Chinese businesses, like all other local and foreign ventures, must comply with Guyanese laws and regulations.

“We’ve made it clear to the regulatory bodies that you have to enforce the laws uniformly,” the Vice President said on Thursday during his weekly press conference.

Jagdeo was responding to concerns raised about Chinese ventures locally. Specific concerns, he said, have been raised about Chinese business owners bypassing local laws and regulations for the sale of different items and the construction of buildings.

He acknowledged these concerns and contended that he too would have protested foreigners bypassing these laws and regulations as a native of Guyana.

As such, he emphasised that the local regulatory bodies have been tasked with beefing up efforts to guarantee that all Chinese businesses comply with the laws and regulations for their operations.

He believes full compliance will help level the playing field for businesses operating locally.

Outside of this commitment, Jagdeo explained that restrictions on Chinese businesses would be difficult to institute.

“I spoke with about four persons and they recognise that you can’t stop foreigner once they get access into the country because we don’t have restrictions on foreigners or foreign companies estblishing businesses in Guyana.

“There’s no restriction on it and there is hard to put a restriction based on nationality,” Jagdeo said.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud, has issued a stern warning regarding the use of fake and unauthorised pension books.

The issue is currently under investigation by the Guyana Police Force.

During a recent outreach in Region Six, Minister Persaud outlined the severity of the matter and warned that anyone caught committing fraud will be held accountable.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud delivers remarks at the Canefield Health Centre, Region Six, on Tuesday

“These books are not authorised by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and as such, it is being investigated by the Guyana Police Force. It is a serious thing and anybody found complicit in respect of who they are, will be held accountable by law. They will face the full force of the law,” Minister Persaud warned.

The unauthorised booklets, which have appeared in various payment facilities, lack the security features and colours of the official document.

Pension Payment

The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has provided all relevant evidence of the fake books to the police. It has warned that anyone trying to pass them off as real will have legal action taken against them.

The ministry also called on its staff, the Guyana Post Office Corporation, and other payment venues to increase vigilance and ensure the integrity of the payment process.

To prevent abuse, persons are reminded that official pension booklets are only distributed through designated offices countrywide.

Minister Persaud urged senior citizens to utilise the various payment methods made available by the ministry via banks and Mobile Money Guyana (MMG). With funds being deposited within the first five days of each month, the ministry’s payment methods are both secure and can be accessed in a timely manner (Republished from the Department of Public Information)

Reigning champions Guyana Amazon Warriors booked their spot in the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final by inflicting an eight-wicket defeat over Barbados Royals in Providence.

Imran Tahir won the toss and decided to field first, himself and his fellow bowlers working as a well-oiled unit to restrict and run through the Royals who eventually posted a total of 148 runs.

The Royals batting card was full of starts but no one grabbed the innings by the scruff of the neck and went on to post a decisive score as wickets continued to fall.

Quinton de K**k chipped a simple caught and bowled chance back to Gudakesh Motie and Romario Shepherd picked up the key wicket of Rahkeem Cornwall with a reviewed lbw decision that went the Warriors way.

Cornwall was looking in fine form and the reversal of the on field decision put the Royals under real pressure that they never really recovered from.

The Warriors bowling line-up shared the wickets between them; Shepherd finishing with 3-35 and Moeen Ali once again bowling a decisive spell with the ball in hand, spearing in 13 dot balls and picking up two wickets to end with 2-24 for his efforts.

Some chaotic running in the scrabble for late runs also saw two run outs as the Royals innings spluttered to a close.

The Warriors set about the total with confidence and managed to win the match and secure their place in Sunday’s final inside 15 overs.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Moeen Ali flayed the ball to all parts at the top of the order, Gurbaz departing for a rapid 40 off 18 balls with four sixes and Ali finishing unbeaten on 44 off 35 balls to cap a fine all-round performance in a crucial match.

Shai Hope made a classy half-century before being yorked by Ramon Simmonds with just two runs needed for victory.

Player-of-the-Match Moeen clipped the decisive single off his pads just a couple of balls later to land the telling blow.

The winning run struck with 33 balls left unused saw the Barbados Royals title hopes left in tatters and Guyana Amazon Warriors cruising to a comprehensive victory that gives them an opportunity to land back-to-back CPL titles.

Saint Lucia Kings lie in wait in what promises to be an enthralling end to the 2024 competition. (CPL)

The Centre for Local Business Development celebrated the graduation of 18 women from its third cohort of the AccelerateHer female entrepreneurship programme on Friday.

The four-month intensive training focused on building leadership and business skills. Participants hailed from Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10, representing industries such as tourism, medical services, manufacturing, and hospitality among others.

Keisha Chung, a past participant turned mentor of the AccelerateHer programme, shared her experience during the graduation ceremony.

“I have no regrets, of course during the programme I asked myself every day how am I going to get through this? What am I doing? Why am I doing this? But it paid off.

“It paid off because at the end of the programme I feel like I emerged as a completely different woman,” Chung told the audience at the ceremony.

Keisha Chung, a past participant turned mentor

Chung believes the programme made her stronger, more confident and a better leader for her business. It also helped her to set up a succession plan and strategic five-year plan for her business.

“So where people might not see immediate funding or financial support and all of that there are things that change within your business when you dedicate yourself to a programmes like this,” Chung said.

Human Services Minister, Dr. Vindhya Persaud praised the initiative and expressed hope for future collaboration with the ministry’s Women’s Investment and Innovation Network (WIIN) programme.

“Guyana is on the precipice of many more great things and it is time now not to see the opportunities but to seize them.

“…and I want to congratulate AccelerateHer for investing in women and for taking them to that point where they seize the opportunities, perfectly equipped with all the necessary elements all the necessary skills and more importantly the network and partnership that is so pivotal for the successes that they want to achieve,” Dr. Persaud stated.

Human Services Minister, Dr. Vindhya Persaud

Dr Persaud said she would like to see the Greater Guyana Initiative expand to such a magnitude that there are hundreds of programmes that thousands of women who graduated from the ministry’s programmes are also able to benefit from.

The Greater Guyana Initiative is a US$100 million (GY$20 billion) investment by the Stabroek Block Co-venturers – ExxonMobil Guyana, Hess Guyana and CNOOC Petroleum Guyana, aimed at supporting the development of programmes across the country over a 10-year period.

“Your commitment to local content must be a real one and I am seeing the strides but it needs to be way more, if our country’s human resources especially our women are able and capable of increasing the labour force that has to be way more,” Dr. Persaud said.

She also encouraged the graduates to become mentors to the women in the ministry’s programme.

“I don’t want to see 30 people in AccelerateHer, no,” the Minister added while pointing to the magnitude of what this programme is achieving and the opportunities for funding, partnership and mentorship.

This Dr. Persaud believes is extremely critical to the success of any entrepreneur, especially female entrepreneurs.

Meanwhile, Director of the Centre for Local Business Development, Dr. Natasha Gaskin-Peters highlighted a recent IDB study that showed the challenges facing women-owned businesses in Guyana.

Director of the Centre for Local Business Development, Dr. Natasha Gaskin-Peters

“That study would have found that 95 per cent of women owned businesses had fewer than 10 fulltime employees, 82 per cent earned less than US$50,000 per year and only four per cent of that cohort were certified, only four per cent participated in global supply chain,” Dr. Gaskin-Peters said.

The importance of continued capacity-building efforts for women owned businesses was also highlighted at the ceremony.

04/10/2024

[Reuters] – Armed men belonging to the Gran Grif gang killed at least 70 people, including three infants, and forced at least 3,000 to flee as they swept through a Haitian town shooting automatic rifles at residents, the U.N. said on Friday.

“We are horrified by Thursday’s gang attacks in the town of Pont-Sonde in Haiti’s Artibonite department,” U.N. spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan said in a statement.

At least another 16 people were seriously injured in the attack in the early hours of Thursday, including two gang members hit during an exchange of fire with Haitian police, according to the U.N. The gang members reportedly set fire to at least 45 houses and 34 vehicles, forcing residents to flee their homes.

The killings are the latest sign of a worsening conflict in the Caribbean nation, where armed gangs control most of the capital Port-au-Prince and are expanding to nearby regions, fuelling hunger and making hundreds of thousands homeless, while nearby countries continue to deport migrants back to the country.

“This odious crime against defenseless women, men and children is not only an attack against victims but against the entire Haitian nation,” Prime Minister Garry Conille said on X.

Conille added that security forces were “reinforcing their intervention” in the area. His office said the public hospital in nearby Saint-Marc was boosting capacity to treat the wounded.

Haitian online TV showed security forces moving into Pont-Sonde, where a burnt-out vehicle lay on the road and bullet casings were gathered on the ground.

In an audio message shared on social media on Thursday, Gran Grif leader Luckson Elan, who was sanctioned by the U.N. last month, blamed the state and victims for the attacks, accusing residents of remaining passive while his soldiers were killed by police or vigilante groups.

“It’s Pont-Sonde residents who are at fault. What happened in Pont-Sonde is the fault of the state,” he said.

Up to 1,000 Kenyan police officers are due to be part of the multi-national police taskforce (Photo source: Reuters)

The U.N. has accused Elan’s gang of killings, rapes, mass kidnappings, robbery, destroying property, hijacking trucks and forcing farmers off swaths of land, threatening to kill them if they return.

“Gran Grif has also committed some of the highest levels of child recruitment in Haiti,” according to the U.N. Security Council. The U.N. believes Haiti’s gangs are armed largely by guns trafficked from the United States.

But Haiti’s judicial system has been paralyzed for years. According to the U.N., no progress has been made in the cases of any mass killings committed since 2021, as well as several major massacres since 2017.

Police are alleged to have taken part in some massacres. Gang leader Jimmy “Barbeque” Cherizier, a former police officer was accused by the U.N. of planning and taking part in the 2018 killing of 71 civilians in the capital’s port-side neighborhood of La Saline.

The port, a key supply corridor, has been closed since late last month due to gang attacks, worsening the already dire food crisis.

CALL FOR ASSISTANCE

Pont-Sonde is a major rice producer located in Haiti’s breadbasket Artibonite region, built around a bridge and important crossing connecting the capital to the north.

The region has seen some of the worst violence outside the capital, compounding a worsening hunger crisis that has seen half the population suffer from severe food insecurity and thousands in Port-au-Prince facing famine-level hunger.

Cherizier, who has acted as spokesperson for an alliance of armed gangs in the capital, said in a video the attack was part of a plan to prevent Artibonite from supplying food to the country.

The number of people internally displaced by the conflict has meanwhile surged past 700,000, nearly doubling in six months despite the partial deployment of a U.N.-backed mission mandated to help under-resourced police restore order.

“We cannot turn a blind eye,” said Raouf Mazou, an executive at the U.N.’s refugee agency, on Friday, pointing to shortages in food, medical supplies and blocked humanitarian aid.

Haiti has so far received a fraction of the resources it was promised and been frustrated in efforts to bring in a formal U.N. peacekeeping mission. Many countries made formal pledges of money and troops, but so far only around 400 have arrived, mostly from Kenya.

“We call for increased international financial and logistical assistance” to the mission, Al-Kheetan said, urging an urgent investigation and reparations for the victims, a call echoed by a spokesperson for U.N. chief Antonio Guterres.

Haiti’s prime minister warned last month that countries should urgently fulfill their pledges in order to contain the situation.

The U.N. estimated at the end of September that 3,661 people had been killed in the gang violence since January.

Haiti’s former government first requested international security support in 2022.

Countries including the United States and the UK, which both hold territories in the Caribbean, have meanwhile continued to organize deportation flights back to Haiti, despite pleas not to do so by the United Nations.

Responding to the “limited” results of the mission more than a year after it was formally approved, neighboring Dominican Republic said this week it would step up deportations of undocumented migrants to up to 10,000 per week.

Although an order was issued for their release, two men were on Friday remanded to prison after they were charged for allegedly abducting Joshua David called ‘Bricks’ one week ago.

Alpha Poole, 35 of Stanley Place, Kitty, Georgetown and Osafo Peters, 28 of William Street, Kitty, Georgetown appeared before Chief Magistrate (ag) Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

At the same time, five other suspects in the matter; Aaron Alleyne called ‘Cats’, Wayne Barker, Damion Barlow, Dwayne Griffith and Daventai Mars surrendered to the Police at the Brickdam Police on Friday.

It is alleged that on September 26, 2024 at Main Street, Georgetown, while in the company of others, Poole and Peters abducted David, with the intent of secretly and wrongfully confining him.

The men were not required to plead to the charge and were remanded to prison. The case was adjourned to October 11, 2024.

Four of the five other suspects who surrendered

Known fondly ‘Bricks’ among his peers, David was abducted outside a Main Street, Georgetown restaurant where he had gone to purchase food on the evening of September 26.

Acting on information, the Police began their search for David last weekend in the Buxton and Annandale backlands. However, three days of searches ended in futility as nothing of evidential value was found.

Before the men were taken to court on Friday, a legal dispute unfolded when attorney Everton Lammy-Singh informed the court of an order that was issued for both men to be immediately released from custody as they were kept in custody beyond their 72-hour detention period.

The order was handed down by High Court Judge Justice Nichole Pierre. She ruled in favour of their release, citing the breach of legal protocol.

Singh-Lammy told the News Room that he will be returning to the High Court to seek contempt charges.

During the Court proceeding, the prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that the men were likely to be charged with a more serious offence as David was not located.

However, Lammy-Singh and Glenn Hanoman, who is representing Poole argued that under the laws of Guyana, the offence is a bailable one and it does not attract a penalty of more than five years.

Among other things, they highlighted that while the pictures of the accused are being plastered on the internet, they are not among the persons who were captured on the video abducting David.

The lawyers also told the court that bulletins were issued for their clients one day after the alleged incident without the Police making any efforts to arrest them.

In fact, they said both Poole and Peters voluntarily surrendered to the Police.

After listening to both sides, the magistrate remanded the men. She also ordered that on the next court date, still images from the video of the abduction be presented in court as well as the video which captured the abduction.
