PRESS RELEASE

PSC calls for National Holiday

In light of the activities surrounding Cricket Carnival, the Private Sector Commission (PSC) is calling on the Government of Guyana to declare Tuesday, September 27, 2022, a National Holiday.

With the Guyana Amazon Warriors slated to play against Barbados Royals at 10:00 hours followed by St. Lucia Kings playing against Jamaica Tallawahs at 19:00 hours, the traffic situation on the country’s roadways will be chaotic for those working and attending school.

The Commission believes that every Guyanese should have a chance to participate in the matches given the consistent wins made by the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the previously played matches.

Further, the PSC is cognizant of the large influx of tourists who have arrived in the country for Cricket Carnival and the positive impact this will have on businesses in the entertainment industry.

The PSC is of the view that all Guyanese will welcome a holiday during this time.

50 middle-income homes underway in Cummings Lodge

Another fifty (50) middle-income units are under construction in the Cummings Lodge Housing Scheme, Greater Georgetown, as the PPP/C Government accelerates its housing drive countrywide.

The project is being executed by the Ministry of Housing and Water’s Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA).

The single flat three-bedroom homes are approximately 24 feet in width and 37 feet in length. It will feature living, dining and kitchen areas, and washroom facilities.

The new homes will add to the more than 250 moderate-income houses currently under construction in the same community, valued at some $2.3 billion. A number of those homes have been completed and have been handed over to families. House lots were also handed over to persons.

Meanwhile, works are progressing on the construction of another one hundred (100) low-income homes at Ordinance Fortlands, Canje, East Berbice-Corentyne, the ministry said Friday. This will add to the 100 homes advancing at Hampshire/Williamsburg.

The flat two-bedroom units, measure 20 feet by 30 feet (600 square feet). Infrastructure works are ongoing simultaneously to ensure that the entire scheme will be outfitted with basic utilities upon completion.

Currently, more than 1,200 housing units are being constructed across Regions Three, Four, Six and Ten, targeting low and moderate-income families, as well as young professionals. Some 300 units were completed and handed over to families.

An additional 170 houses will be constructed in Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara targeting low-income earners.

Further, last month, Minister Croal announced that government will invest some $30 billion to construct 4,500 housing units for families in the lower to moderate income, and young professional brackets.

A total of 1,500 housing units will be constructed at La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara, (Region Four), 1,000 at Leonora, West Coast Demerara, and 1000 at Wales, West Bank Demerara, (Region Three). 1000 houses will also be constructed at the new Silica City, to be established along Soesdyke-Timehri.
