Did You Know?
Georgetown, the capital city of Guyana, has an intriguing history! Originally a small town in the 18th century, it was first the capital of the Demerara-Essequibo colony under Dutch rule. In 1781, the British captured the colony, and Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Kingston chose the mouth of the Demerara River for a new town. The French took over in 1782 and named it La Nouvelle Ville. When the Dutch regained control in 1784, they renamed it Stabroek after Nicolaas Geelvinck, Lord of Stabroek, and President of the Dutch West India Company. Eventually, the town was renamed Georgetown.

Sea Defence works are underway at the riverfront opposite the Mackenzie Market in Linden. Hon. Bishop Juan A. Edghill- Minister of Public Works disclosed that the project, valued at 95.7M GYD, will install a 175-meter-long Rock Armour, also known as Rip-rap, Sea Defence Structure. This design consists of large boulders compactly placed along the river bank to absorb the energy of waves and minimise their impact on both the natural and built environment. As Guyana and the rest of the world continue to grapple with the effects of climate change, the Ministry of Public Works and the Government of Guyana are committed to putting measures in place to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of the countryโs citizens and residents.
